I have owned my 1999 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER COLORADO 3.0L diesel for the last four years. The car has covered 190k miles and has never missed a beat .Regular oil change and scheduled cambelt replacement being the main expenditure.I would not recommend anyone starting up a specialist Land Cruiser repair business as unlike other specialists their services would not be in demand. It does not have the street cred for the school run but if your up to your neck, in whatever, you know you have the ability and reliability to get you home.

We have 4 Children so could not have a standard saloon we have tried the Sharon/Galaxy and the Merc V class both wore out or where problematical. However this amazing truck has done 203000 miles with us and apart from normal servicing it has had only one problem, we had to replace the radiator, the design has changed since. We wore out the rear suspension which wasn't inexpensive but apart from getting a bit tattier with age it still goes like a train and takes all of us with a trailer and roof boxes on Holiday and it is full most weekends travelling the country with Kayaks and 6 strapping lads in the back. Would most certainly buy another.

We bought ours new 11 years ago and its just passed 140,000 miles with just a replacement radiator being required throughout its life. Amazing! Spends lots of time towing horse trailers around the country, ploughing down pot holed tracks or hauling building eqipment around central London. Perfect at everything we throw at it. I just cant imagine what I'd replace it with so will just keep on running it. My mother bought a new Land Cruier in 2009 which is quieter, faster etc but it doesn't do anything which the old one can't. Well done Toyota, Land Cruisers rule...if you have a Disco get to your local Toyota dealer and swap it!

We have had a colorado and only just let us down after 210000 on the clock.( head gasket) We tend to average 20-30000 miles of heavy trailer pulling ranging normally to 3.5 ton. it pulls like a train, greaty off road with good tyers.
best 4x4 we have had beat any landrover we have had. gd allrounder

I bought 8Seater Toyota Landcruiser Colorado VX 3.0 from UK WITH 175000miles and i have exported in Romania where i'm using every day on most bad roads you can imagine , 2 weeks ago i was pulling a 3.8tonne trailer ,believe me she was pulling like train! Also over here in winter we have 20 inch of snow and she keeps going without problems (ofcourse with proper winter tyres), last week i had to drag Discovery and BmwX5 out the snow.
The Colorado is one of the best rivals for a Land Rover Discovery, and much the same size. Like the Disco, it's very strong off-road, with standard high- and low-ratio gears ALSO THE BEST IS DIFF LOCK, pretty handy on Tarmac, too. It rides well most of the time, better even than a Land Rover Volvo XC90 in certain situations and much better than a Mitsubishi Shogun.
I had before Vauxhall Frontera and Volvo XC 90rubish off road AND IN SNOW.
We're as family very pleased with this 4x4, my wife prefer to drive Landcruiser than nearly new VW Touran because is does feel more safe in this 4x4.
Make sure if want to buy one of this ,look for abuse and with full service history as some of them are abused, my one had previous owner for 11 Years and with full service history and this proved that there's many more years of life left in her.
And dont't forget i belief Landcruiser has been built for draging Discovery and other 4x4 out of mud and snow!!!
Good luck.

I have owned a Toyoto Landcruiser Colorado VX for 3 months. I bought the car because I have to drive four kids around and did not want buy an ugly looking people carrier. The kids love it its very spacious the seats are good quality leather front 2 are heated and the back ones fold away nicely to create more space. The engine is very reliable does not let you down come rain hail sleet or snow mine has done 93K which is not even warmed up fro one of these. The body is solid as stone however you can also purchase chrome mirror covers and steel spare wheel covers that make the Colorado stand out. Fuel consumption is around 20mpg as it's an auto but its well worth the drive. Great 4x4 miles better than other jeeps around

Owned from new, bought in Spain. Now covered 310000km, only failure was fuel sensors for starting at 290000. Spends summer getting covered in dust in Spain and winter ditto salt in Scotland, but still no rust. Has towed heavy caravan all round Europe. Has been serviced from Greece to Glasgow, and have yet to find a bad toyota dealer

I bought a Toyota Colorado in London and drove it all the wat to South Africa (Capetown) It is an amazing car. Never stopped. Sometimes we were driving non stop for 3-4 days over the worst roads I have ever seen. No problems. We did see many other cars broken down next to the roads but was always feeling really lucky that we were in a Toyota. Amazing car . . all I can say.

i have owned my toyota colorado from new 1996 and a 125000 miles on the clock she is a loyal, practical, ever reliable member of the family. I had a blowout at 70 mph on the motorway with 7 children in the car and she steered to the hard sholder solidly on three wheels - what a car. I am not the best driver and my car suffers i am sure but this car takes everything you could throw and delivers a safe solid comfortable ride. I know that the resale value would be low now and yet she is worth her weight in gold. What a car. i sincerely recommend a toyata colorado or a land cruiser to anyone - you will not be dissapointed, its more than you will ever need. (unless you are a middle aged divorcee who needs a sports car to compensate for other things) otherwise perfect. Oh also turns on a sixpence and stops dead!

I've owned a Colorado 3.0TD GX commercial (rare item) for nearly 8 years, done 135K, everything original (except the exhaust what I broke in a forest... and brake discs) used everyday, starts first time every time on the original battery, goes anywhere (quickly if you want it to, boy racers get a scare or 2) drive hundreds of miles and get out feeling like you just drove down the road. Been in snow up to the bonnet, water over the wheels, with a load in the back, unstopable, indestructable, go as far as bomb proof. And with the manual box, no worries about radiators flooding auto boxs... Wouldn't have anything else, except I now need 4 seats and the comercial capacity. Hope the new Hi-Lux is as good, got alot to live up to...

Best car in the world... I got mine with over 300,000 miles on the meter and it still runs like it just came out of the showroom! If you are thinking about getting one I'd advise getting a diesel manual that is the TDGX 98 model! Not that I have any thing against petrol engines or automatic transmission its just my diesel motor has been the most reliable car ever and as such I am biased towards diesels! However if you are buying second hand always check the service history as some have had engine rehauls!

Its a superb vehicle to drive and returns 35.95mpg on a long run even around town it 's well above 30mpg. I have just covered 2000miles across Europe with relaxing ease. Mine is the 3door D-4D so maybe the 5door will use more fuel. Apart from London doubling the Road Tax I have no compaints.

Now over 200,000 miles in 9 years. Scrupulous 6000 mile oil changes. Doesn't seem quite as lively as it was when new! But seats 8, mixture of biggies and smallies, and tows a recovery trailer with 1 tonne vehicle, and still averaging 26 miles per gallon, this with auto. One thing to remember, and my transmission repairers inform me, is that in the event of the radiator failing between engine coolant and cooler, (they share the same basic matrix) that you will almost certainly require an auto transmission rebuild as engine coolant destroys the friction surfaces of most modern auto transmissions, this applies to Mercedes, BMW etc. Quite expensive but there you go. Also the front to rear cabin heater pipe rusts out, causing total loss of radiator coolant. Repair immediately! Otherwise, the best all round vehicle I have ever owned or expect to own!

My friend owned an earlier model Toyota Land cruiser 4x4 for nearly 20 years. It was a 101% reliable, and travelled great distances carrying heavy PA systems and musical instruments. On many occasions I went along as a part of the band, and this convinced me to get my own. I have never looked back, and now I carry my own equipment and do the same. Comfort and reliability is second to none, and a test drive is a must for anyone thinking of buying a 4X4.

The Toyota Landcruiser Colorado is probably the best off-roader money can buy. It has been voted as the best 4x4 in the WORLD 7 times including 1996, 1998 & 1999. It pulls incredibly well (it has 253lb/ft of torque!) and at extremely low revs as well (1600rpm). If you're thinking of buying one though, I would personally wait until January-March 2003 because the new, improved replacement is coming out in those months. A Toyota spokesman says that the already decent on road ride has been improved but the off road ride remains the same as ever: unbeatable.

I like the BMW X5, V8, steptronic g/box, Sat Nav, TV. I liked it so much I bought a BMW 540I!.
<br>All the goodies, better performance, and half the price! I've just driven the new Disco and Range Rover. At a LR experience day. The Range Rover was brilliant, so it should be its got all the running from my BMW540 in it!, and I almost forgot 6K miles "on the clock" and it broke down! In a very dangerous way. So what did I buy for "day to day" workhorse, on and off road. You guessed it! A Landcruiser, Thr LR offerings arn't in the same league !

Frank. Sounds like you are new to 4x4's. live in a city and drive 2k miles per year and have no shortage of cash - hence your choice and comments. I work in Mountain rescue in Scotland. All the manufacturers have given us cars to test. Results. X5 - does not go off road - not enough ground clearance, poor gearing and no grip. Disco, when they work they are great - trouble is they regulary don't work (see JD Power survey). Range Rover - we had the new one for a month - week one fine, two - oil leak, 3 - gearbox - granted our conditions are extreme but it suffered typical land rover weakeness of dubious quality. We have four ten year old Landcruisers, one suffered a split suspension strut three years ago after it had an accident - apart from that no issues, no problems - In our jobs lives depend on reliability - the Landcruiser never let's you down. We now have three new D4D LC5's - only three months old but seem even better. Also have a Volvo XC and the new VW 4x4 - we think the landcruiser will win again.

I'm sorry to point out to "Frank" from the UK that the BMW X5 is not an off roader! It's a "soft roader". A vehicle designed primarily for the road with off road capabilities. The Toyota Landcruiser Colorado is a no nonsense off roader. The two vehicles aren't similar in their design brief at all. The X5 can't possibly hope to stay with the Landcruiser when the going gets tough in the same way the Landcruiser Colorado can't compare on the road. I believe Toyota have addressed this issue with the all new Colorado while improving all of it's off road capabilities!
<br>"Expensive to run" you say. Have you actually owned a Colorado? The D4d returns 30mpg at legal speeds and never goes wrong. Parts prices are comparable with the other makes you mention. “The Mercedes and Discovery are also far better buys as they are not lacking in any department compared to the Toyota, although the BMW or Range Rover are probably the best buys if money is not an issue”. I'm not sure what your purchasing priorities are, but it appears you do not consider reliability and build quality very highly. Check out the JD power survey and see how the others faired against the Colorado; I rest my case.

Most people in Aus buy 4x4 to go off road not drive around the city. You say buy the BMW 4x4 ,,,must be a joke they dont even have a real spare wheel ,2000ks out in bush no spare? thats if they get that far,off road ability is very low.As for the landrover been the best 4x4 ,,well yes when new, lots and lots to go wrong when off road, nightmare waiting to happen, dont rust though oil leaks fix that.Toyota wins hands down reliable and good off and on road
Written on: 18/12/2002
I heartily disagree 'Frank'. I think that although the Landcruiser is rather long in the tooth, it cannot be beaten by anything for mixing on and off road abilities. You say that you would rather buy an X5 but although excellent on road, they aren't exactly brilliant off road. As for the Range Rover, well, thats the kind of vehicle for people who think money is no object. Then you said that you would choose the Discovery over the Toyota!! Well I can tell you, if you really would do that, I'm not too sure you know about the big Toyota's reliability record! As 'jss' states here, it is virtually indestructable if properly serviced and it's nothing like that for the Landrover. Final choice: Toyota Landcruiser Colorado VX D-4D!!

The Toyota Landcruiser is rather long in the tooth as well as very very expensive to run.
It's abilities on and off road are over shadowed by a number of 4x4's most notably the BMW X5 and the new Range Rover. The Mercedes and Discovery are also far better buys as they are not lacking in any department compared to the Toyota, although the BMW or Range Rover are probably the best buys if money is not an issue. The Range Rover undoubtedly has the edge for it's off road performance which is superior to any other 4x4 currently available. On financial grounds the BMW makes for the soundest purchase without sacrificing prestige.
If I was in the market for a 4x4 today I would seriously consider the BMW X5 3.0D Sport, Range Rover TD6 Vogue or Land Rover Discovery TD5 GS in that order of preference.
