To start with, I thought Open Study were amazing! However, further on I am really regretting spending the money on the courses! You would expect to have to pay for your exams, but I wasn't told how much my practical assessment for Biology would cost - £250 on top of the £400 I paid for the course to begin with! I also had to go through the hassle of finding somewhere that would allow me to do the assessment as a private candidate. For my Health and Social Care, don't even get me started!... (read more)

So far so good! :-) I have been enrolled with the college for the last 2 months, and I have had a good chance to look at the course content and to get started on the assignements. I think the course is certainly not easy, and it is a challenge to search for and find all the information. But I am fascinated by the subject and very motivated so that helps. I felt kind of the same at first, looking everywhere to see if I could find some sort of confirmation... In the end I took the plunge and I have to say everything went well so far. Each time I write to my tutor I get a thorough reply very quickly, and a note from the college acknowledging that they are aware that I wrote, and then that the question is resolved. My daughter now also registered for a course. I didn't finish the course yet of course, so I don't have the certificate yet, but I confident it's all legit. Hope this helps.

Speak to NCC if that's who you used to enrol; I cancelled the direct debit and then requested a refund and to be fair they were pretty prompt in organising it, probably because they were bang to rights and I hadn't received value for money. I would say there's a decent chance you'll get refunded if dissatisfied. Good luck anyway!

The online website he used was similar layout and offers everything that this college does but at the end of his course he was asked to pay an extra £500 on top of what he had already payed to have the certificate. Hello Muminmy,
We're glad that you're satisfied with your course so far, despite some initial concern that your course was mostly paper-based instead of online.
We specify the study method on each course page of our website to minimise this sort of confusion, so we're not sure how you came to be under the impression that your course was online. However, if there's anything we could do in future to make it clearer, we'd be most welcoming of your feedback.
May we ask which course you enrolled on and whether you've enjoyed having a course pack, or whether you'd have preferred online study, given the option?
Do keep us updated on your progress - we always appreciate students' feedback!
Best wishes,
Open Study College

I was looking for a CompTIA A+ training course for my son and researched a number of options online. The Open College course looked fairly comprehensive compared to the others. I telephoned the college and was informed that the course was computer based but came with a comprehensive set of manuals. Dear Gavin123,
We’re very sorry that you weren’t entirely satisfied with the cost and contents of the CompTIA training course, and we hope that our full refund within 7 days was an acceptable solution to your concerns.
I can confirm that the delivery charge of £17.99 would have been made in error, as the CompTIA A+ course is CD-ROM-based and therefore has a much lighter parcel weight than our paper-based course packs (these typically contain a course manual, stationery items and textbooks in a study bag). A charge of £17.99 is reserved only for Express Delivery of these large study packs, which are sent via courier, and this must have been mistakenly applied to your order. We can understand how this cost must have seemed unjustified at the time, and we apologise sincerely for this mistake.
Furthermore, it would appear that the incorrect delivery charge unfortunately happened as a result of the main error that you mention –which is that the person on the telephone said that the course came with a ‘comprehensive set of manuals’. This is not the case for CompTIA courses; however, if the Course Advisor on the telephone mistook this to be the case, then a higher delivery charge would have been mistakenly applied for what was thought to be a heavier and much larger course pack.
We have clarified the details of the CompTIA course with all Course Advisors and administrators so that this does not happen in the future, and we hope you will accept our sincerest apologies.
Kind regards,
Open Study College

Written on: 19/04/2012
Dear Gavin,
In normal circumstances, and as part of our terms and conditions, we would not usually refund the cost of delivery when a student chooses to cancel their course. However, in light of the circumstances you have described, we are happy to refund the £17.99 delivery charge.
If it was your son who enrolled with us, please give us a call on 0800 970 9131 and confirm his details with us so that we can arrange the refund for you.
Kind regards,

Can I ask, which Health and social care course with Open Study do you refer to? I am thinking of their level 3 NCFE accredited course and it says there is no exam for this course, or additional costs on top of their course fee. There is also no mention of the written assessments requiring submission via an external college.
Were you on a different course? I really don't want to find myself in your situation!!

I did A level health and social care. With A levels you have written exams and coursework and so need to sit the exams somewhere and find somewhere that will submit your coursework - which is extremely difficult! I was lucky that I found out about needing to submit it in time as I very nearly missed my deadline. I was also given the old address for my tutor when I posted my coursework to him and that put me back another week when I was already pushed for time! Just make sure you find out everything YOU have to do.

Thanks, I have called them this morning and got them to confirm all the costs for my chosen course and that there is no need to use any external college. I don't see on there that they offer H&SC as an A level, so perhaps they scrapped it? I'm sorry you had such a bad time with them. I think I probably will take a chance with them, and hope they honour their money-back guarantee if I don't like what arrives in the mail! I have to say I am a little anxious about who they use as tutors though as I asked the student adviser I called for more info on their H&SC tutors (background experience/qualification etc) and they can't disclose these details, even once you enroll. You just get a name on a piece of paper. I hope they are legit.!
