“Restaurant was empty but we were turned away ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 11/05/2014

We had always liked the Dog, so decided to go for my partner's birthday. It was a Saturday but at 5.15 pm, we expected the bar to be empty. It wasn't but the only tables available were occupied by a man with a rather lively springer spaniel straining at the leash, jumping up all across three tables. No-one wants to eat with a dog jumping around them so we asked if we could sit in the restaurant area, which was virtually empty. We were told that it was fully booked but having a sneaky look at the booking form, most tables were not booked until 7.30pm. We would have been finished by then. We left, disappointed. When we wrote to the manageress, she was very unhelpful. We had a lovely meal at the Peacock, Oakerthorpe, instead and will only partake in drinks at the Dog in future. Pity.

Woooow wee, where do I Start, this will be grim!! Very small Portions... You need 3 courses to fill you up, Here go's.. we was booked in for Sunday lunch 9th feb.2013, We was waiting 25mins before being seated at a table that was vacant and set ready all that time, not a biggy at this point, we placed our orders, it was very under staffed and somewhat under experienced,my mum asked for extra veg as she did'nt want potatoes, that did'nt seem a problem at the time, our food arrived looking lovely, the chef can cook, but we was served 1 portion of veg in a small dish between 3 of us, we asked for more veg. But the staff took that long in sorting it out, we had to ask twice, When it did eventually arrive we had finished our meal, Not Impressed, as the table next to us had 1 dish of veg each!! Is was a very pricey meal for what you got, maybe that's how they make there money, you need 3 courses to feel as though you had a good fill, and believe me I'm no big eater, then to top it all off we got charged a lot more than what we should have, But the bill was not itemised so that was a tad difficult, we did eventually sort it out,but the staff was a little slow to say the least on sorting it out, they did not have a clue, very disappointing visit, will not be recommending and certainly will not be returning, I was that disappointed I phoned up on the Monday to explain how ripped off I felt, she said it was because they was a large party in and they was priority!! but we was still paying customers too, she was very defensive and basically told me if we had been before we would have known to order more veg!! and to write a review who cares, disgusting attitude to have,Please do not waste your money, go to a nice village pub somewhere that will be half the price and bigger portions for your money.

VERY Rude staff. £2.60 for a can of cola. £1.90 for a glass of Water! Card payments only for bills under a fiver! Avoid. I know this review seems harsh but I feel it necessary to warn other by voicing my experience today .

“Gone to the dogs!!”

written by on 14/05/2012

My freind and I here on Sunday 13th May and really wish I hadn't bothered. I've even her several times before and was always impressed with the lovely food and service...well that's a thing of the past! The service was terrible. The head waitress/manager was very rude, barking at us to sit in the bar and order at the bar as we hadn't booked a table. Then she nearly bit our head off for having the cheek to ask for vinager!! I've never been made to feel quite so unwelcome...manners really do go a long way! We both had gourmet burgers. Mine was missing parma ham, and my friends was missing stilton cheese! The burgers themselves tasted like something you get off a cheap burger van...nothing gourmet about them at all. The only half decent thing on the plate were the home made chips...but they didn't warrant the ££11 price tag. My advice stay away...this restaurant is obviously still surving on its previous reputation. Just wonder went wrong?

“very rude staff”

written by on 30/04/2012

we have recently visited this "eating outlet" expecting to have a nice pleasent meal but on arrival we were greeted with an unfriendly welcome via staff (as if they did not want us there). After that we thought oh well im sure the food will be nice, first of all we ordered our meal which was brought out and slammed on our table with no cuttlery, we waited a little while until we had to ask for it worrying our meal would go cold. Upon starting our very expensive burger it soon became clear to us this was not the burger in the description. As we had payed 11 pound each for this burger we decided to question the staff where the chillies and piri piri sauce was that appeared to be missing. The staff were once again very rude and insisted all the ingredients were included which they cleary was not. top tip: Avoid this pub like the plague, if you want a burger that says what it is for the right money, visit mcdonalds where the staff actual smile and everything is what it says on the tin

“Not Good At All”

Both myself and partner enjoy eating out regularly as well as cooking. We thought we would the Dog Inn at Pentrich as it appeared in the Derbyshire Good Food Magazine and have trusted this with many other fine eating establishments across Derbyshire. Firstly on arrival we noticed that the choice of drinks available is neither extensive or of a quality you would expect in a

“A Dog That Needs Putting Down”

★☆☆☆☆

written by BruceEBonus on 17/08/2011

Went here today when a local workmate suggested we go for lunch. She had the cheese coated chicken baguette and I had the ham and plum suave ciabbatta thingy. Both cost around the five quid mark. Came with no chips, or crisps or well...anything. Just a smidgeon of tired looking salad. Quite a generous portion admittedly but not in any way memorable. Really the kind of thing you could make yourself in two minutes wi a cob, a slice of thick ham and a coating of relish. But pay ten times as much. Way overpriced. Sullen staff. The coffee was foul and very expensive. £2.25 for a pot of tea? I don't think so. The only saving grace is the nice decor and surroundings. Shame the food and service doesn't match up to the very high prices. Suddenly Wetherspoons seems appealing again.. What a shame.

“Have had better school dinners”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 08/08/2011

Shocking meal - worst we've had in a Derbyshire pub in the past five years. Spiced Turkish Meatball starter had no discernible spice, was greasy and contained more gristle per meatball than I've seen in any cheap sausage; the tsatsiki was yogurt with cucumber and not much else. Main course of Slow-cooked Rosemary lamb was a pile of fatty roast lamb, with little flavour (no rosemary in eveidence) and left a residual coating of fat in the mouth: sub-school dinner standard, certainly not a 'gastro' pub. Little evidence that anyone cared that we didn't want puddings or coffee. Very poor indeed.

we were passing thru as we have just purchased property in the area so thought it looked a welcoming nice country pub/restaraunt where we could have a nice meal with the children after a hard day renovating our newly purchased property, we were greeted by a young man behind the bar who abruptly asked is what we would like, we ordered our drinks and asked if he had any fruit shoots for the children to drink, NO was his reply, then appeared a lady who in an rude and abrupt manner told us NO CHILDREN ALLOWED in the bar area! ok i replied sorry can we sit in there and pointed the a seated area which was the restaraunt area, her reply being NO SORRY ITS BUSY!! but as i glanced over to look i noticed there was not one person sat in there, ok so you dont like kids in your pub so why not put a sign up stating this or tell us in a polite manner, and tell us before we purchase drinks for ourselves and the children, wont be going there again, shame as is close to our new property, hence went somewhere else and was made welcome .................

“Wish I had found this review site prior to our visit....”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 21/01/2011

Wish I had found this review site prior to our visit. What a shame. Firstly table not set for correct number of guests, despite booking in and being at bar for drinks. Ordered 1st bottle of red wine which was perfect. Sat for meal and oh dear, the goats cheese and beetroot salad for starters becamw a game of hunt the goats cheese - 4-5 teaspoon size prtions mixed with 2- 3 pieces of beetroot in loads of mixed lettuce. Ordered roast chicken for main course, have never in all my days have I seen chicken served in such a way. I am a qualified cook and would never dream of serving chicken as they did - 2 portions of 2" x 2" x 2 1/2" pieces, including skin and bone. When the dish of vegetables arrived there was hardly enough for 2 let alone 5 persons, they did bring extra but only 1 portion. Having picked off the chicken there was barely enough for a child let alone an adult portion. You get more at a KFC bargain bucket for much much less. The price for this was daylight robbery. Ordering a second bottle of red wine, which was deliverd to the table with condensation on it, it was so cold, when asked, the waitress advised us that it was a problem for them as they had no suitable storgage for red wine to be served at room temperature, and would we like it placed in front of the fire for a while.!!! Ordering a sweet of a treacle roly poly pudding was also a mistake, £5 25 for a portion which left much to be desired. To end the evening 2 of the party had a coffee, and when the bill arrived, we had been charged for 4 and also been charged for puddings we had not had. This was rectified bit what a dissapointing evening. We were unable to complain on the eveing as the guests we were with had recommended the venue and it would have been very embarrasing.Certainly not a good evening and not value for money. I do not mind paying for a nice meal but this meal was certainly overpriced for the quality of the food. Will not be going again and will not be recommending this restaurant to anyone.

terrible service and food, looks and sounds great but was just horrid. Staff were poorly trained and rude, more interested in chatting to each other than doing their jobs. Left all our empties on the table, never once asked us if we'd like a drink we had to keep asking them or just go and get it from the bar ourselves. I had pork it was severly overcooked and the fat hadn't been rendered at all. Food was not as desribed. A terrible experience, i will not return. Waste of money, much better options around.

We had just moved into the Pentrich area and had been told to go to The Dog Inn for food as it had an excellent reputation. My partner had pre booked the table earlier on in the day and specifically told them that we had children 3, 8 & 15, they said they didnt cater for children but to bring them and they would be fine !Well I can assure you it was not fine at all we got there and were told to take a seat in the waiting area a woman came up to us and the first thing she said was "we dont do kids meals" I explained that when we had booked they said we can bring children so she said "ok " My 3 yr old daughter who is a bit of a live wire decided to go for a walk in the restaurant, she didnt run or make any noise ( she was just being nosey) the manager came over to us and said "she cant be running around like that our regulars wont like it, most people pay a babysitter to look after their children when they come here" I was absolutely appalled at the way I was spoken to, it was rude, unprovoked and totally uncalled for. I decided to ignore her comments as I was not in the mood for confrontation that day, we went on to have our food but felt very uncomfortable the whole evening. The food however is very nice but without the atmosphere whats the point?

written by on 22/11/2010

I came here tonight to celebrate my engagement. The service I recieved was appaling - the manageress was speaking down toher staff like dirt on the floor in front of other customers, making myself and my party feel very uncomfortable. When the food was served an hour after it had been ordered, we recieved a dish with an ingredient in that I had asked the manageress to leave out due to an allergy, however, when I asked this, the waitress had no idea if the ingredient was in there or not, and when this was passed on to the manager, I had to wait a further 10 minutes until she came to discuss it with me. Another half an hour later and my meal had finally arrived as I had asked for it.
We decided to take all this with a pinch of salt - it was quite busy, and the young, inexperienced waitresses didn't seem to know what it was they were supposed to be doing and had little guidance from the powers that be - their manager. Our main course then arrived before our starters had been taken away, and this caused a lot of hassle and faffing about with the plates. I bought a round of drinks, only to have finished my main course by the time they arrived.
We were then given the dessert board, only to be told that most of the desserts were unavailable. This left us with two options - eaton mess or cheesecake. We ordered 4 eaton mess and 3 cheese cake, only to be told that there wasn't enough cheese cake and would we prefer a 5th eaton mess instead.
Over all, poor service, untrained staff and appaling food.
Never again.

probably the worst experience of dining that I have ever had. The tables were too close together and our night was completely spoiled by another diner who accused me of "watching her". Her psychotic behaviour and the failure of the staff to recognise her agressive behaviour upset our evening and we will never dine there again. The fact that we ere nearly sat on their table did not help but the food wasn't that great either.
