Gina Sandford, An Essential Guide to Choosing Your Tropical Freshwater Fish has helped me when choosing fish for a community tank, as it clearly states the fish's requirements (Temp, PH ETC) and clearly states if they need to be in schools or can be singular. It does give behaviour patterns for most fish including there preffered location (Top, mid, bottom ETC) which can help vary a display.
