Good Points: practical, roomy, nippy
Bad Points: Expensive to service.
General comments: The overall ratings given here do not accurately reflect what it is like to own one of these little cars long term. I think they're absolutely great!

I would never buy a Mercedes Benz A Class car again. Although it is spacious, it is also very unreliable, on most occasions the engine does not start straight away. And it's expensive to maintain.

The Mercedes Benz A-Class 170 CDi has good legroom front and rear. Diesel gives reasonable mileage to the gallon. I like the higher than average driving position leading to good visibility. I find it comfortable and good to drive. Once used to the bonnet being out of sight the vehicle is easy to park.
Unfortunately these points are outweighed by the negative aspects of owning a Mercedes A-Class. Expensive servicing. Too many niggling faults. We are on our third alternator idler pulley, the s ...

I have borrowed a Mercedes Benz A Class A140 as my car is in for repair. This is possibly one of the worst cars I have driven in recent years. It is twitchy and feels unstable at any speeds over 25 MPH. It tramlines almost violently over furrows and even raised white lines and requires more concentration than any other modern car I have driven to keep it pointing in the right direction! The steering seems to give different feedback (and rates?) for different conditions requiring over or under co ...

I have had a Mercedes Benz A class-a140/a160 - and now always rent them when my car is out of service - that says something.... but I don't own one anymore - that says something too...
Not bad on fuel, manouverable but a little unsteady on the Motorway. Doors always tend to be too close to the pavement when parked. Irksome fascia and controls not that intuitive. Great to be in, not great to own.

All I seem to be reading here is negative reviews of the Mercedes Benz A class. I'm on my third A-Class, and have loved all of them, an A140, A160 and now an A210.
I have no problems with any of them and have done some epic journeys in them. North west UK to southern Spain on several occasions. They return pretty good miles per gallon and are quite quick due to their light weight contruction yet still manage to get 4 stars in the Euroncap test.
Mercedes Benz have made over 4 million of the ...

Overall the Mercedes Benz A class-a140/a160 is a good concept and a great drive. ESP a life saver and all cars should have this. Semi-Auto best thing ever developed for town driving. MB Dealership non-existant and they really don't care. Quite happy to take £700.00 pounds from you and not fix the faults that you book the car in for.

Went for 2 weeks break and left my 4 1/2 yr Mercedes Benz A class-A160 in a shaded protected carpark. When I got back, the aircon blows hot air instead of cold air. Took it into the Singapore dealer for servicing. They could not tell what the problem is. They could not even tell if the coolant is leaking after injecting some dye into the system. They therefore claim that the leak is from within the pessenger cabin blower and needs to remove the dashboard to repair. The cost US$2000. I also feel ...

My 1999 avangarde has the dreaded petrol smell. It's had 2 fuel clips(grasping straws)and is not cured. Other faults you may have or will have are:- Rear arm bushes, seats with square holes in runners colapse, louvre sunroofs smash up.(£1200) New ones redesigned in aluminium, but they won't admit the old ones are week. Add this to very expensive servicing, £77+vat in my area and you can see the minuses outway the positives. Shame could have been a great little car.

I bought a 2000 170CDI in 2002 and sold it about 18 months later. I did 30k miles in it. I have owned three other Mercedes, a 190E and two 300TEs. The A Class is proof that Mercedes can't build cheaper cars. The design is fantastic, but the car shakes itself to bits. Rear swing arms, rear spring, front springs, front anti-roll bars joints all either replaced or falling apart in 50k or less. The low profile tyres can't handle the rock hard suspension and vice-versa. The seats are too hard for a r ...

I had a 160 AvantGarde for nearly a year, and it was the most fault prone car I have ever owned.
List of faults - stunk of petrol (never fixed by Mercedes, sunroof failed (interior damaged on replacement), windows failed (three times), anti-roll bar fixings failed, car came back from servicing minus stereo and full of broken glass (replaced by MB), Paint scratched during servicing - not corrected, dash not put back together correctly, electrics failed due to inept servicing again, battery faile ...

Mercedes have become an institution over the years, yet appear to have become more affordable to the working class person. When deciding whether to spend my hard earned cash on such a luxury item I considered the alternatives. Ford, Vauxhall, Fiat, Nissan Etc. When I saw the Mercedes I fell in love. It is a practical, versatile and well refined piece of engineering. It handles well; it drives itself (Well almost). It came with cruise control, speed limiter(for those nasty speed cameras), CD, air ...

It's incredible how so many people looking for a cheap little runabout overlook this car. Safety is its greatest attraction - the high seating point being a deliberate design to put the occupants high and safe. Add six airbags, doors that shut like the "S" class big brother and the three pointed star and for $A30000 this is a bargain. Why are people buying small Japanese cars instead of the Merc? All it needs is a BRABUS engine kit (122Kw) and you have 10/10!

Despite the bad points I loved the car and would probably still buy one. HOWEVER, Mercedes have flooded the UK market. The marque has lot any prestige they it may have had. The car was fairly rare when I purchased mine, and that made the car feel special.
The handling is superb, although the seats are not comfortable, although you will get used to this.
The car is also practical being able to swallow large amount of language and it performed its household duties well.
Fuel consumption was h ...

I have driven a Mercedes A Class A160 for 50,000km during three years. The handling is very good for such a small car. It is also practical and has a lot of storaage space for a car of this small size. But it is a nightmare to own. On my car I have had to have the following items changed, a lot of which are not covered by warranties:
Sunroof - changed twice due to it leaking water
Generator - Completly broke after 45,000 km
Start motor - Completly broke after 45,000 km
Ignition system - Cha ...

INTERIOR:
The first thing that catches your attention is the clever design of the Mercedes Benz A140 A-class.
The interior space is very good compared to the exterior dimensions. Buttons and switches are well positioned and the materials used seems to be of good quality.
There are adequate storage compartments and the flexibility offered by the folding/removable rear seats is very welcome.
RIDE & HANDLING:
The car offers a relaxing & comfortable ride. The handling is predictable and safe. ...
