“I bought this car new a little over 12 months ago, and...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 09/01/2011

I bought this car new a little over 12 months ago, and quite frankly it is the biggest waste of money I've ever be involved with.

To begin with, I have had 2 of these because within 3 weeks of buying the first Q5, the engine & electrics all cut out completely whilst doing 70mph on the motorway between Edinburgh & Glasgow. Very scary stuff - no PAS, no brakes, no lights. Naturally, I returned it to the dealer immediately. I should have taken this as a sign to walk away at that point, as I've grow to hate the car since then.

Good Points:
- Feels very safe inside, and holds a straight line on the road.
- Very comfortable & quite for such a heavy car, and laps up the potholes.
- Good bluetooth in-car phone & stereo.
- Trip computer very functional and accessible from steering wheel controls.

Bad points:
- For a 2.0L turbo diesel, it is extremely uneconomical (absolute max 40mpg out of town, 30mpg anywhere else).
- Has a huge turbo lag, especially in 1st gear, which makes pulling out of junctions dangerous at times due to the power delay.
- Driving at any speed under 35mph feels like the parking brake is half on.
- Very poor at cruising, as you have to keep the accelerator depressed just to hold your speed.
- OE tyres on 18" rims make it spin/skid way too much in the snow & ice, so very poor for a quattro.
- Fine mud & spray from rear wheels tends to build up inside rear door frame, then rubs-off on passengers clothing when they enter/exit.
- 0mph on the speedo's face is at 6 o'clock, which is just wrong & quite annoying. Makes tracking speed at a glance very difficult.
- Tip-tronic gearbox is non-responsive if you wish to change up a gear, and only works going down the range.
- Air-Con controls are mostly flush buttons, so it's difficult to change any settings by touch.

I blame nobody but myself for buying this car. I made the mistake of getting excited about a new car, which was the first new car I'd had in 9 years. What really annoys me is I traded in my 2000 X5 for the Q5, and it had nothing wrong with it. It was a bit thirsty as it was a petrol engine, but it was a far better car to drive.

Incidentally, when I spoke to my Audi dealer a few months back about their advertised fuel economy figures being much higher than I was experiencing, they tried to fob me off with the old "it'll get better once the engine has been run in" pitch. Well, 11K miles on the clock and it's still much lower that expected. I know for a fact that it's not my driving skill, as I can achieve higher than advertised mpg figures on my other 2 cars (and one of them is also an Audi).

Conclusion: if I could turn back the clock to 14 months ago when I was thinking of buying a new 4x4, I would now have preferred to have either a) kept my old X5, or b) traded it in for a nearly new diesel X5 for the same money... and I would suggest you do the same now if you are in a similar situation.
