Good Points: great picture / sound / price. plays non-standard vcds/ svcds. easy make multi-region

Bad Points: no mp3 search. interface isn't great

General comments: plays (s)vcds with hack. multi-region with firmware cd-r. possibly plays dvd-audio and SACD with hack but haven't got any disk to try with.

correct hacks are for any lg 5xxx:
(copy and paste this text in to a notepad file)

    vcd:
player on with no disk in drive press the following:

    pause, 1, 4, 7, 2

(note down 8 codes shown across middle of screen if you are wary)

press up x3 (the value at the top should now correspond with the 4th value from the left in the middle of the screen)

    enter FF by pressing:

    program, 6, program, 6, enter
(if your player doesn't have 5.1 outs this will also enable 5.1 menu in setup.)

    now turn off the player

    SVCD:

player on with no disk in drive press the following:

    pause, 1, 4, 7, 2

press down x2 (the value at the top should now correspond with the 2nd value from the RIGHT on the middle of the screen )

note this 2 digit value down

only the first digit of the value needs to be changed by adding 1 so:

    0 becomes 1
    2 > 3
    4 > 5
    6 > 7
    8 > 9
    A > B
    C > D
    E > F

if the first digit is already 1,3,5,7,9,B or F then SVCD is already enabled.

    input the first changed digit(1,3,5,7,9,B,D,F)
(to get the letters press program then 2 for B, program then 4 for D, program then 6 for F)

now input the 2nd digit in the same way (which you should have a note of)

    press enter, off

if I haven't explained this easily enough or you come across a problem then mail to drcl_@tiscali.co.uk

just make sure you keep a note of the original prom values or I can't help you!

There are a lot better products on the market at the moment for the same price and that are easy to find multi-region and macromedia codes for. This one however is a lot harder to find the codes for, i also have a different DVD player which for the same retail value will play mpeg video's straigh from copying them to disk and jpeg images, i feel this product (LG DVD5083) although is not overpriced could been made more customer friendly. (if anyone can find the appropriate codes, then could you p ...

The LG DVD5083 is a nice DVD player. Good value for money. No VCD support but I think you can enable it by remote control.

This LG DVD5083 DVD player (£129.99 from Tesco) is overpriced for its spec, it has many less features than players costing £85.

Picture quality is OK, but setup is not very clear and there are not many options!

If the price comes right down & you don`t care about full compatibility then consider it, maybe!
