“southern airways express hubs”

★★★☆☆

written by 489Clark on 14/02/2024

About Southern Airways Express Southern Airways Express, a commuter airline that offers flights to more than twenty cities in the US's Southern and Mid-Atlantic States. There are four bases: one each in Baltimore (BWI), Memphis, Pittsburgh (PIT), Palm Beach (PBI), and Pittsburgh (PIT). The airline was launched in 2013. It has seen significant growth, with more than 100 daily flights operating under its own name and up to 1,500 weekly flights operated by its partner airline, Mokulele Airlines. Since the acquisition of Mokulele Airlines, the carrier has been in partnership with Mokulele Airlines. This acquisition allowed the airline to focus on Hawaii and offer a similar service in Hawaii, which is not available at smaller airports. The airline's growth has been driven by partnerships and airline acquisitions. Southern Airways Express also acquired Sun Air Express, which was an important milestone. It took on its routes as well as aircraft in 2016.

“Had seats all booked together only to be moved on arrival”

★★★☆☆

written by 446Mueller on 28/06/2014

We had 3 families all save for over 2 year for a holiday to florida. One Family on their quest lost their mother through Cancer. We flew on the anniversary of her death for obvious reasons. It was a very emotional flight out, As we were over the atlantic at the time of her passing. All went great flight was great and we were all there for each other. Our time in florida was fantastic with Plastic been stretched to its maximum. The whole holiday went as planned in fact even better with no problem. It wasn't till our last day when we phone to check in. Only to find that our per booked seat had be changed. We were told it was to balance out the plane. The 3 families were split up and sitting in all different areas. 4 upstairs, 2 to the middle 3 to the rear 14 seats in total. All round the plane. Our seat were all to be upstairs. because the last person that booked had to pay for premier seating. It was the only seating left. Therefore we pre booked all the seats upstairs so to be together. The seat we had on our return 4 of the T.V's didn't work so this meant that 4 of them were move even further. We went upstairs to find that our pre booked seat had been given to wait for it. 2 premium passengers that virgin had over book. so gave them 3 seats together so they could spread out on. So VIRGINS greed to fill their premium seating was so much they were prepare to move others. Would I travel with Virgin again.? Two of our party also work in travel, Will they recommend virgin.? Heartless & Greedy Virgin. Watch your small print. They can choose to move your pre booked seat at any time. For any reason. They said to us it was to balance the plane. We know better. But their agents choose to lie.

“Flying BA next time”

★★★☆☆

written by on 15/08/2013

Virgin Gatwick to Orlando - flew Premium Economy. Upstairs at front next to toilets used by everyone on top deck ( including economy passengers) - queues in aisle at all times. Vegetarian food very poor and as always delivered 15 mins ahead of my husband's normal meal. Going home today from Las Vegas - really hope it is better. We fly long haul 4 or 5 times per year, usually with BA, but are unlikely to select Virgin in the future.

“The Flight”

★★★☆☆

written by judithevans30 on 25/11/2012

You’ve seen the advert..don’t be taken in. I have always wanted to fly Virgin, thought it was the best but the service is second rate. I dare to ask for a second cup of coffee with the very very inadequate breakfast, which consisted of a cereal bar. Eventually I got up and asked, they will be round for seconds, again I waited and had to ask. I spoke to the Team Leader who was very defensive but did make me a cup of coffee. I pressed my service button and waited half an hour, when she came she turn it off without asking what I wanted. I know the team leader will have excuses but her handling of the situation was not professional and if I was an aggressive type, which I am not I could image I would be classed as an unsavoury passenger. Don't travel virgin is my advice unless its a very cheap price.

“No breakfast”

★★★☆☆

written by on 22/08/2012

We flew with Virgin Active from Johannesburg to London and back recently. The flights were on time and the staff were very friendly. The seat spacing in economy class was also not too bad. However, we sat at the back of the airplane when we returned. With dinner there was no vegetarian meals left. In the morning about 10 rows of people at the back did not get any warm breakfasts because it was finished. So try to sit to the front of the airplane to ensure you get meals.

“GOOD FLIGHT WITH BAD STAFF (NOT ALL THOUGH)”

★★★☆☆

written by on 07/08/2012

We flew from SFO to LHR, the airport staff were so rude. Seems they act like you're on free flight that they can be bossy. The seats are so narrow, I read this complain but I would like to try this airline for the first time. Yes, bad comments on seat are correct. The foods are Ok and they have a consolation give away. Going back from LHR to SFO, the airlines staff were not so helpful when we asked about check in. She said, that we need to check in the designated computer by ourselves. We tried but computer is not cooperating. Luckily, there's one staff - Audrey, who offered help and tried to check us in but again the computer was in a mess. She called her Manager and help us and referred us to another check in counter. I appreciate Audrey who tried to help us. If you're in London and so much tense as there's problem on the way from taxi and traffic and when you've reached the airport - computer is not cooperating. What about those passengers who don't know how to use the computer and staff were so snobbish. Anyhow, with this Airbus flight, we were offered foods, sweets, drinks and it's a lot. I guess, a consolation for all the troubles we had during check in. This time our seat is much better than our outbound flight. If you will ask me to try again this flight, never again. As a consumer, we are expecting to be treated as a human specially the ticket price is not cheap. If only Virgin Atlantic will let their staff attend a better customer service and changed their ways, may be YES. But no it's not recommendable at all!

Flew on va from manchester to orlando, check in went sm oothly and all the va staff seemed really nice. Got there abit earlier to get better seats, and better seats we got. Food was nice, entertainment was good. however, air stewerds where abit snobby, my little sister isnt a good flyer and was feeling unwell, when a steward saw her being sick she just looked at her in disgust and walked off, offering no help on concern. Apart from that everything else was fine.

written by matth42 on 29/03/2011

After experiencing several problems on both outward and inbound journeys, an email of complaint was sent to customer services. No working entertainment on a 9 hour flight and rude crew plus a 2 hour delay on the way back. The planes on both flights were the oldest in the fleet and were a great disappointment after previoulsy flying with Virgin Atlantic. Customer services were excellent and replied within 2 days, offering compensation of 8000 Flying Club miles and a full apology. A poor experience made better by a fantastic resolution to the problem.

“Flight out, sitting upstairs on a 747, was excellent...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 15/10/2010

Flight out, sitting upstairs on a 747, was excellent apart from the dreadful food. Staff were friendly and helpful. Good legroom and comfortable seats. However, flight home was on a single-decker (an airbus?) and was awful, despite the plane being relatively new. The legroom was awful, especially when passengers in front reclined seats. Also, Virgin have now divided the economy cabin so that the middle row of 4 seats is old-fashioned economy, but the outer two seats (window and next) are subject to a $50 premium. When we boarded in Boston we were told that passengers moving to empty side seats (and there were plenty of these) would be made to pay a $50 penalty, hardly good PR at the start of a flight! Food on the way home was again awful (why bother with the food if it's going to be this bad?). My other gripe was a really snooty stewardess who seemed to think that she was superior to her passengers - no dear, you are a waitress in the sky, not a brain surgeon - get a life! Overall, the hype surrounding this company is unjustified. I would fly with them again, but only if they were much cheaper than some of their rivals

Its easy to knock Virgin, they've had to cheapo out a bit, basically premium economy is what economy used to be! But all airlines have cut back, the good old days are sadly gone. Still despite this they do try their best, nice little bag of goodies etc. and the food wasn't half bad. Only complaint was the stewardesses were super moody, but I guess unlike BA they can't go on strike when they want!

“I have to concur with some of the negative comments...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 03/10/2010

I have to concur with some of the negative comments from Virgin Atlantic customers on this website. We recently flew with them to Las Vegas then returned with them from San Francisco. On the way over we found the seats cramped and very uncomfortable, both had numb bums after 8 hours into a ten hour flight. We found the seats on our domestic flight with US Airways Express were much more comfortable.

Food on both flights was of low quality and only eaten out of hunger really. The trolley dollies were ok overall, not curt or snappy. The red eye crew dimmed the lights, obviously to keep the passengers quiet so they could grab a rest?

The planes are knackered old 747-400 series and have seen much better days.
No anouncements from the flight crew on the way back, they left the cabin service manager to keep us updated.

The IFE had to be rebooted after a couple of hours due to failings on individual seats. This took about 40 minutes and was "only fair" according to the service manager.Inconvenient if you are half-way through watching your chosen movie though!

Because of our experience on the way over we opted to pay an extra $50 each to buy extra legroom seats. This turned out to be worth the money. We could stretch our legs out fully and did not feel our space was being invaded as much when the passengers in front reclined their seats.

We still went a bit stir crazy at the end of the flight though as we were in a stack waiting to land at LHR. An extra 30 mins but we just wanted to get off the plane by then.

For a long haul flight i would not recommend Virgin Atlantic at all and we are determined to avoid them at all cost the next time we cross the pond.

It seems to me that because Branson is a billionaire he really doesn't give a monkeys!

Aside from the above comments we had a wonderful honeymoon in Vegas and San Francisco.

written by on 24/07/2010

We were about 15min early, which was good for a Boeing 747. The staff on boarding were a bit rude, not child friendly. Apparently they were back up crew and the safety video did not exist, it was just a women on a loud speaker. BOOK your seats on the virgin website for free because it's worth it! We were over the Atlantic ocean now, so we had food, but before this my tv was broken and the attendant said it could take up to 20min. Food was chewy, just like airline food, and on the way back it was even WORSE!!! We had one of the older 747-400 on the way back and could not play games and the plane had seen better flying days. Food on the flight back was, cold beagles with plastic cheese.

“for what you get its not worth the upgrade. maybe if...”

★★★☆☆

written by ryanronryan on 31/05/2010

for what you get its not worth the upgrade. maybe if the upgrades were £200 per person cheaper for a return then that would be fair.

seats are comfy. we sat in bubble upstairs before they put the rule in about only people who book 4 star accomodation and upwards can sit up there.

we got a group of 4 lads who were a little noisy in the bubble with us, when we had booked there for peace and quiet and they only upgraded when they checked in!!! maybe virgin should have thought about other passengers who had paid full money to upgrade for peace and quiet before offering to certain individuals.

contrary to what most people have said, the return journey was just as good as the outward one. the v lounge at gatwick is great also. overall i would do it again but it is a lot of money for what you get.

I believe you are talking more about Virgin Holidays rules on the bubble.
<br/>If you book with VAA there is no rule about who can sit in the bubble.

written by on 31/10/2009

Had returned from a holiday with Thomson Airways where I had extra leg room and was surprised to notice that Virgin Ecomony, although a Schedule flight, was cramped and uncomfortable. Drinks and lunch were served within the hour. Some passengers on the flight were extremely rowdy and the cabin crew did nothing about this so no chance of a nap. After about 4 hours I went to get a drink only to be told that they were serving any more alcohol. This was unfair because the rowdy lot were continually going up for drinks. Have flown with virgin before and this time was by far the worst. Flight left over an hour late on our return.

“Lhr-Dxb: 8th August 2009 ”

Lhr-Dxb: 8th August 2009

On arrival at Heathrow I had already checked in online as it was my first time on Virgin Atlantic so it was as easy as pie. Security was suprisingly quick for any airport in the UK. Departure lounge in Heathrow was average for my first time in Heathrow. Gate should have opened at 19:45 but finally opened at 20:15. Boarding finally begun boarding at 20:40. VS401 boarded 1:00 late and it took forever!! finally almost 1:00 late the doors were finally closed and the plane began push back for the 5:30 flight to Dubai. The safety video is very funny but informative and it made me laugh and grabbed everyone's attention. 1:00 late the Airbus A340-600 lifted off the ground. When the meal came round it was Chicken in White Wine Sauce and it was disgusting. We had 1 duty free round 1 juice round 2 rounds of tea & coffee and only 1 round of soft drinks!!!!. 2 of the flight attendants were rude one tutted at a kid and another one walked off from another customer.

The return was much better the flight left 10 minutes late the meal was much better but I didn't know what it was again 1 round of soft drinks.

An average flight but not always again with Virgin Atlantic

“I flew to New York from London Heathrow on boxing day...”

★★★☆☆

written by umutbaz on 22/03/2009

I flew to New York from London Heathrow on boxing day 2008 and came back on the 2nd of Jan. Both ways Upper Class Heathrow lounge was fantastic, it is like a restaurant, you can order from the menu, I ordered breakfast, pancakes and had a nice champaign, staffs were friendly. Outbound fly was ok, seat was comfortable, but the seat position was not good, i had to turn my head to see the sky from window,
both ways they did not have medium size pyjamas, so i wore large size, they just keep hundred small size pyjamas which is weird. Food was horrible, tasteless.
On the way back it was night flight and the crew handed out breakfast request forms, which I filled in with order what I wanted for breakfast in the morning but they lost the form and brought me things which I did not order. The bar was always open and it seems no passenger were there during both flights.
New York JFK lounge was all right but not as good as LHR.

“I made my first ever transatlantic flight recently. ...”

★★★★☆

written by on 09/01/2009

I made my first ever transatlantic flight recently. Overall I liked the service and am fairly likely to go with them next time, as the reviews for the various alternatives with better flight times appear to just be BA, the US carriers getting a consistent panning. Of course, it is not Virgin Atlantic's fault about the time slots, they're taking what they are allowed to have.
I did find the staff variable. I had a vegetarian meal which didn't have the cheese and crackers that everyone else had so I asked for them. They started offering me another meal as well and saying that I must still be hungry and they could give me another meal - I didn't want another meal and found that embarrassing as other passengers were already glaring when I got my meal immediately and they had to wait (we were delayed for 2 hours due to a fuel issue at Heathrow, again this is not Virgin Atlantic's fault).
Coming home I started to feel ill at the gate. I looked pretty rough by the time I got onboard. However the majority of the staff were cheerful if not in a great deal of evidence most of the time.
So do I go with them again? Well the entertainment is the best out there by far but they don't change it very often so maybe I might not be so swayed by it next time.
