The HP PhotoSmart 812 digital camera is small and lightweight, and the Pentax zoom lens retracts behind a protective shutter when powered off. Unfortunately, the camera sucks battery life like crazy. I have had to change batteries after taking as few as 18 pictures. The shutter button sits just in from to the power button. I have powered the camera off by accident way too many times because of this. There is also way too much lag between the pressing the shutter button and the actual shot being taken.
I would gladly throw it in the river if I hadn't spent so much money buying it.

We baby our camera's and have never had the problems that we have had with the HP PhotoSmart 812. We are on our 3rd camera and are expecting another one from the repair center today... they have had it for 2 weeks after quoting us a 2-3 day turn around. They keep sending us refurbished camera's... one which quit working as soon as I turned it on the first time! I have never been so fed up with a company and will NEVER buy or recommend another HP product.- Read caren's review (123 words)

I'm an ameteur filmaker, but this is the first stills dig cam I've had. It's a doddle to use. 20 minutes with the instructions will do. Settings are no problems. A few buttons let you see your pics, magnify and see details on the pics, delete any, queue any for printing or email, or tell you how many more there's room for on the memory card.
I'll never try the video capure!!
It's pentax lens is a cracker.- Read Billywill's review (149 words)

I have had this camera for a month and half and overall I was extremely pleased with the picture quality. I use it intensively. The battery life is too short however. Luckily it uses regular batteries so I use rechargeable and always carry a spare. The card that ships with the camera is far too small so it is necessary to budget for additional memory cards.- Read lev's review (105 words)

I have had this HP Photosmart 812 digital camera for three weeks. It's been tested under all conditions : the camera worked perfectly under them all : indoor (with or without flash), outdoor, macro mode, zoom.
I was amazed by the picture quality : sharp and with correct colours.
Video mode : not great quality, but enough for a simple recording
Sound capture : not very good- Read hell's review (101 words)

So, based on the very popular three-way review I just did (PowerShot S330 vs. DiMAGE X vs. Coolpix 2500), I'm back with a look at the HP Photosmart 812 ($499) and the Kodak EasyShare DX4900 ($399).
