“Nice addition ”

★★★★☆

written by Azzermanshivers on 27/02/2015

Picked this 180 up this morning, used it all day on pid work in North wales, perfect for clearing thorn where you need manoeuvrability to avoid the splinters, It sectioned down a Norway spruce no problem and hardly noticed it on my harness, however I used the 660 to reduce the stump to ground level as I'm breaking the 180 in gently. Power is on the cusp of my 201t, but not quite as powerful, or so it feels, brilliant on fuel and oil, did notice slight oily side casing but this thing had a full days use, 9am till 4pm As an arborist I would recommend this saw for light logging 12" top end and site clearance, love the oil and fuel caps, chain brake feels great as Stihl do, I own and run a Stihl 150t a 201t a 180 and a 660, for the money it's good paid £180 for mine, I've spent that on Nike air Jordan's, so I guess it's a bargain. Only slight niggle is the rear handle feels a bit cheap, that's me.

“Buy any other brand”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Churchilleu112 on 07/02/2015

This saw ran well until a piece of metal from the combustion chamber dislodged and shattered the piston ring and destroyed it. It was bought new and came with a 2 year warranty that is catagorically refused by Stihl. I had used the saw only 4 times. Pricey and poorly constructed with a hollow warranty.

“Good Little Saw”

★★★★★

written by Briano115 on 04/11/2014

I have 4 saws, the 180 being the smallest and a 80cc Husqvarna at the other end. I love my little ms180. As another reviewer said, it is not the saw for logging large timber but that is not what I bought it for. Fantastically light, manoeuvrable and reliable - I find it is a great little saw for light limbing or trimming. Pound for pound, this is the best saw I have bought!

“Absolute Junk”

★☆☆☆☆

written by FreeFlowin on 24/05/2012

I bought this brand new and used for 1.5 hrs. It started smoking while I was cutting a 4-5 inch logs. It was smoking from the internal. They told me I melted it by using the safety break too much and reving it at high RPM's. I told them I did not do that and followed the directions in the manual. They won't give me money back or do anything for the warranty. Stihl's customer service is pathetic and this saw is worse. Maybe Stihls heavy duty machines are better and I believe they are, but not this little thing. After finding other people think it is junk as well, I'm shopping for a Dolmar or Echo.

Klol's Response to FreeFlowin's Review

Same problem. On top of that, there was no bearing on mine. The shaft bent in half. Stihl claimed they've seen this before and I must have run it with the brake on. How do you vaporize brass bearings. How do you cut with the brake on? Dealer was good about it, but I still had to buy another engine from them at their cost. Stihl has NO warrantee. Maybe the higher priced models work ok. I've used a small Echo on 2 foot trees. Starts on one pull and cuts it like butter.

I had the same problem.

Brand new and not even used twice and it was smoking internally. I was told the same - I ran it with the brake on....impossible.
I purchased this from Cranleigh Garden Machinery Ltd, Surrey UK and they too refuse to give me my money back.

Both Stihl and Cranleigh Garden Machinery Ltd customer service is appalling.

No matter the year these saws were purchased there is obviously an ongoing defect in the machine yet they refuse to acknowledge a problem - it suits both the manufacturer and the dealer to pass the blame to the customer.

“Worst chain saw to purchase”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 12/09/2011

This new saw worked very infrequently over the ten hours of use. Thereafter, chain saw couldn't be started and has been sitting collecting dust. I would not recommend this chain saw to anyone and I had better luck with the chain saws from Canadian Tire...absolutely a piece of junk!

This is an excellent little saw. No it is not suitable for weeks working in the forests of Oregon, but that is not what you have paid for. It is light, a good starter, cuts well and is really economical. I went of a week long course and the instructor was a little dismissive of my saw to start with. By the end of the week he was talking about buying one himself. The only issue is that if you run it dry it can be difficult to restart as it does not have a priming bulb, but this is solved by refilling when it starts to splutter, instead of leaving it until it dies.

I nearly bought a cheap and chearful saw but was pursuaded to buy a Stihl by a gardener with more years experience than I care to mention. 'If it ain't got Stihl or Husqvana on the lable then don't touch it' he advised and I'm glad to say his advice was well received, it's a cracking little saw.

Not the easiest to start and too easily flooded for my liking - I find I have to make sure I remember to carry a plug spanner with me, just in case, but once it's warm, it starts very easily. It will run for hours on a litre of fuel and if kept sharp, it's surprising what it will cut. Certainly 10" semi seasoned cherry is a doddle and with anything green it just slices through.

Very smooth in use due to the anti vibration system.

Good build quality - I get the feeling this saw will last me some time.

Top tip - the chain doesn't like hardpoint screws!!

written by will waters on 15/03/2010

I have the model up from the 180 i have the 181, I went on a course on how to use it,(do go on a course before using). I have a small farm with a fair few trees and a log burner so i got this i first used it at home yesterday and it worked really well, the chainsaw cut through a hole oak tree which had fallen down a few years ago, i had a bow saw and it could not compete with the chainsaw. The chain it comes with is very srong it even cut through a nail ( i did not know it was there. Has exceeded expectations so far and a good place to get safety equipment for yourself is Machine Mart. However do not buy a stihl from Scats Country store that are useless.

“I was given this Stihl MS180 saw as a gift. I like it...”

★★★★★

written by on 10/02/2009

I was given this Stihl MS180 saw as a gift. I like it a lot. For its size (about 2 hp) it does the job. I have a 14" bar on it, and it works fine for limbing and general cleanup of smaller branches. I have cut down some trees almost 14" in diameter, and it did that job as well. I think its rated for up to a 16" bar by the way.

This is a fine saw for limbing. In combination with my bigger saw for dropping the tree, I am all set up. I will reach for this smaller one every time as long as I can handle the job with the 14" bar. It is lightweight and easy to use.

If I was only going to own one saw for clean up and firewood cutting, I would probably get one a bit bigger, but that is not a criticism of this saw. This saw is for smaller trees and branches, and it is excellent for that.

This saw starts with a couple of pulls every time. Even in cold weather.

All around a very nice saw. Lightweight, maneuverable, powerful enough. Mine has the thumb wheel for tightening the chain. I would prefer the normal set up where you use the scrench. The thumb wheel works ok, but it seems a little hard to get the chain as tight as I would like. It takes a lot of thumb pressure.
