The black screen of death appeared today. It worked fine the last time I used it. I read all reviews about the Sony CyberShot DSC-P51 digital camera, and I tried everything technical and then gave it a good tap on my hand, and it came back to life. It now works intermittently!

From what I gather, Sony are not very sympathetic, and they want to charge nearly the cost of a new camera to look at it!

Same song, 92nd verse. I got a blank screen after owning the Sony CyberShot DSC-P51 digital camera for 3 years. I sent it back to Sony. They wanted $118 to repair it! You can buy one on EBay for $20. The best part is, they didn't even give me a chance to respond with a yes or no to repairs before they RETURNED THE WRONG CAMERA TO ME (based on Serial #)! This way their records show they returned it, in the meanwhile they probably repaired mine and sold it as "refurbished". I'm going with Canon t ...

Follow up from previous reviews... I had the same problem with my Sony CyberShot DSC-P51 digital camera after a couple of years of it working perfectly. Sony UK are offering a free fix on this - phone them for info on 08705 143480 or check the website at:

I had the same mysterious blank screen with my Sony CyberShot DSC-P51, but I must say, I have got my money's worth out of this camera. I have had it for over 2 years, maybe 3. Time to move on to newer models. I would have liked some warning, as the camera went out at a time when I really needed to take pictures for memories.

Sad to say the same as all the rest with the Sony Cybershot- the mysterious and sudden blank screen. Why is this??? I would get it fixed but the price tag is way too high! I still use other Sony digitals but my first love (the DSC-P51) is sadly missed.

My Sony CyberShot DSC-P51 digital camera worked great until the black screen of death suddenly happened. I tried all the tricks mentioned, and no go. I called Sony and talked to an idiot that was yelling at me. I told him I could buy a better pixel camera for their repair price. I don't trust Sony anymore. Panasonic or others will work for me.

I have the same problem with my camera as another reviewer - the LCD screen is blank, and Sony wants approx. $200.00 for the repair. All I do is gingerly tap it on the palm of my hand, this seems to help for a couple of weeks. I'm sure eventually it will stop working.

I have had my Sony CyberShot DSC-P51 camera for two years now. I use it sparingly and gingerly. Today I turned it on and found a blank screen. I reset the camera and called customer service. I got nowhere. I will try a Nikon next; can't be any worse than this problem.

I bought a DSC P-51 in May 2003 and was very happy with it. So happy that I decided to buy another one for my daughter as well.

BOTH cameras went blank in the meantime, I contacted SONY to ask if it was a common known problem but they told me to contact a local service to have it repaired.

And now I find that it really is a known problem. What a shame for SONY!!!!

What a shame that a camera that cost $300 seems to break down so suddenly... I could understand if it fell or something but it never did! I think that this is the last digital I will buy, I am gonna stick with the old fashioned 35mm store developed pictures :) Oh well if I have to wait an hour for pics :)

I purchased a Sony CyberShot DSC-P51 a year and nine months ago and last night I turned it on and there was only a black screen with lines moving up and down on the LCD screen. I have no clue what is wrong with it, I keep in my desk drawer when not in use and it was working fine last time I used it. I do not believe I would pay the $171 someone else mentioned that Sony wanted to fix it. Better to just buy a new camera. Sad.

I had the same experience with the Sony CyberShot DSC-P51 as the previous reviewer. The camera worked fine for approx 18 months. Then the LCD screen got black! Am told that it is a sensor problem. I cannot even find a service place close by to see if it is worth repairing. What bothers me most is that I bought the same camera for my nephew in India who wanted a good digital camera from USA (cost $240 plus!) Dreading the day he is going to find the same problem with his camera!

    Sony should rec ...

The LCD screen of my Sony CyberShot DSC-P5 simple quit working. Went through each troubleshoot step repeatingly with no effect. Sony would fix it for a flat rate of 171.00. I paid 199.95 for the camera when new. Stay far away from this camera if you want one that will last more than 17 months!

I got this as first step into digital pictures. Have been amazed by the print quality. Very easy camera to use, always produces pictures in good focus. Some nice picture effects and easy editing.

I always use the camera in the best quality mode so suggest buying a bigger memory stick than the one supplied otherwise you can only store about 16.

    Fantastic buy!
