“Appalling customer service ”

I arranged an appointment for my fiancee at the Adam Street location which I believe is a club of some sort. We informed the guy at reception of our arrival and he rang King and Allen. The guy came down to say that he'd be ready in 4 minutes and then disappeared for half an hour and did not come down despite the reception guy calling him again. I enjoyed the whole experience from the initial consultation, measurements and the fun of selecting from the great range of materials, colours and patterns. Through to the the first and final fitting. The studio in Wilmslow was easy to find, in a convenient location and made the drive over worthwhile. So... King and Allen was recommended to me by a friend say four years ago, I thought that it would cost a bomb to have a bespoke tailor made suit to my own specification- choice of design, choice of material, unique little tweaks, embroidering the inside of your jacket with what ever you choose, name.. special date etc etc that make it yours... but no way!!! Would prefer not to go into too much detail especially given that the speed and efficiency of service @ King and Allen was just one of the elements of their service that was most appreciated. This was my first ever fitting for a bespoke suit as I wanted something extra special for my wedding. I had looked at several 'off the peg' suits and, although some of them were nice, I thought for a similar price I could have something made just for me. I was looking for a new DJ suit for my forthcoming wedding. I had looked at various "Designers" and stumbled upon King and Allen. I arranged for a consultation at the Wilmslow branch and found Karl very helpful with all the options available. “Depends who you get”

I've had 2 bespoke suits from King & Allen. First suit was measured in Milton Keynes by a frankly incompetent tailor. I hesitate to use the term tailor; sales assistant would be more accurate. Scrub the sales part, as I could have been sold a more expensive material. The assistant ran through the choices, measuring too quickly with no interest in my needs outside of the standard questions. Im a first time customer to King and Allen, and before i went, i came here to see the reviews and some negative feedbacks made me reluctant to the service. But oh well, i gave it a try. Just got my suit via post yesterday and all i can say is, superb. Had some minor adjustment 2 weeks ago and never mind this is only a 299 suit. “Traditonal Evening Tail, White Tie Ball Style”

On Consultation was greeted by a man who appeared to be a cleaner. A young lady named Alex served me and was unexperienced in ( White Tie Frack) in German and the design. Spoke with Mr Allen about the proposed garment showed photographs and also asked to have a concealed pocket into the tails. Mr Allen appeared to be unsure of how to conceal the pocket in the tails. I have to question the positive reviews. Fake reviews aren't just necessarily competitors..My experience with them has been very poor indeed. Poor fit, poor product, very poor customer service- rich price! I honestly don't think I have ever dealt with such an unprofessional and incompetent company. I have now ordered and received four suits from King & Allen. The process has been flawless from start to finish, with the first suit fitting on the first fitting and all subsequent suits being an identical fit. Once they have measured you, the process is so quick and efficient that you will wonder why you bothered buying off the peg before. I bought my first suit from King & Allen 18 months ago and have just gone back for number two. Personally I've found the quality of the suit as well as the knowledge and advice is first class and certainly on a par with other tailors at three times the price that I've used in the past. The suit has stood up extremely well to a year and a half of moderate use and is showing no signs of wear. I've already recommended K&A to friends and would have no hesitation in doing so again. I have had my suit for around a year and its still going strong and the best suit I have ever worn. I get loads of compliments and loads of my work colleagues have seen mine and got themselves one!!! I ordered a morning suit for my Civil Wedding as I was keen on the idea of a bespoke suit. The tailoring process went quite well, and after a couple of adjustments I was happy with the morning suit that was ordered. I was however left waiting for my shirt which didn’t arrive until the evening before the wedding. I received no apology for the delay, and the most I was offered was a recommendation that I purchase another shirt elsewhere as the one from K (read more)

Firstly I'm a genuine customer. I like the concept of K and A but have been very dissapointed in the outcomes. If I hadn't of spent the best part of £1,600 I'd probably find their performance midly amusing. I had to attend numerous fittings where K and A presented me with a range of comically ill fitting garments, not meeting my specifications and badly made. “A proper bespoke suit at much less than Savile Row prices”

I'd long spent £150-£200 on suits from M&S and the like, with varying results - they have good fabrics, but the fit is never exactly right. So when I decided to spend £400+ on a bespoke suit, I was keen to ensure the thing actually fitted. I'm happy to say King and Allen provided one (and, since, two more) that fit the bill exactly; even my troublesome collar, which rides up on off-the-peg-suits, now sits perfectly. I've always had problems with clothes fitting me as I often find shorter inside leg trousers never fit and I have to get large sized jackets to fit me but the arms are always too long. Being Best Man at a wedding has lots of responsibility and one that is often overlooked is to look good on the day as you'll be in lots of photos! The groom wanted to get a wedding suit made that he could wear for other occasions afterwards (rather than waste money hiring). I have purchased 2 suits from King and Allen, and my experience with both of them has been unsatisfactory. On the first suit, the bottom of the jacket fell down within 8 weeks as it had not been tacked properly. There were suggestions that this was in some way my fault for placing heavy objects in the pockets (which was not the case and certainly not my wallet having handed over the best part of £2,000 for both suits to the manufacturer). Dear Sir. Usually I would respond to this myself, but this review has been taken quite personally by my colleague Charlotte who has requested that she write a few words. For my own part I would like to apologise that you did not enjoy your experience, and I hope we can straighten things out. I am at least heartened that you now have two suits that you are happy with. I'm sure we can prove to you that your service was not typical if given the opportunity. I will arrange the discount myself. You should find me vary generous! Anyway, over to Charlotte: "I wanted to once again apologise for the length of time your fitting process has taken with your last suit and thank you for your ongoing patience. We do, very occasionally, have a fitting process that takes longer than the 2-3 fittings we ask you to plan for, however, I do assure you that your suit, in this instance, has taken an unprecedented amount of time. We offer a fit guarantee, which means that we will not finish the process until your suit meets tailoring standards or how you have requested from the outset. We have looked back at your history and it would appear that the length of time needed for this suit was mainly due to the balance of your suit not being fully resolved at your baste fitting. As you have mentioned, tailoring in not an exact science and resolving an issue such as the balance, especially on a double breasted suit, uses a great amount of experience and skill and occasionally our tailors get it wrong. Unfortunately, all tailoring is subject to human error and we hope we are clear enough from the outset that this is part of the process.
Your suit was tailored in full and from your first fitting it was clear that the balance needed to be rectified. Instead of retailoring your suit, as we are aware of the delay which impacts our clients, our tailors have attempted to rectify the balance through adjustment. This was unfortunately unsuccessful and the only option to ensure a perfect suit was to retailor your suit from scratch. At this stage, we can attempt to cut corners to get your suit to you as quickly as possible but this is not the best course of action. We have retailored your suit and offered another baste fitting. This suit proved very successful and after minor tweaks I am glad to hear that you are happy with your suit. In hinds sight, it is clear that retailoring from your first fitting would have been the most efficient option but there is no way of predicting whether adjustments will be successful or not.
Over the past year we have made every effort to ensure that our clients do see the same tailor from initial consultation to taking your suit away with you. As soon as the issues with your suit were flagged up, we did guarantee that you would see the same tailor for each fitting and even ensured that our most experienced tailor was assigned to you until you were happy. In 2012 all of our customers will have a tailor assigned to them from start to finish. I must once again apologise for not contacting you when our Head tailor was unavailable at Bank for personal reasons, I simply did not put two and two together to make sure that you were contacted. A tailor was arranged to cover our head tailors absence but I agree I should have taken a better look at who he was scheduled to see you on that day.
Our fitting day manager had asked to see you himself on this day. I do apologise if you left the conversation feeling uncomfortable in any way. I have spoken to the tailor you are discussing and he was more worried that you would have made a wasted trip than trying to assert blame anyway. He was trying to build your confidence in his abilities and persuade you to be seen, as he felt he was available and able at that time. He was aware of your situation but not of every detail of the lengthy conversations we have had and was therefore unaware of how strongly we had discussed you see our head tailor for each subsequent fitting appointment. He was trying to be helpful and I once again apologise if this was misconstrued.
I am sorry that I did not contact you to discuss your compensation. You must admit that my response, even though not to your satisfaction, was immediate once prompted. We have put a lot of time and effort to ensure you have a perfectly fitting suit and therefore suffered a great financial loss. You are a valued customer and we would like to keep you as such. I must admit that I was expecting you to negotiate, and I am disappointed that you did not allow me the chance to discuss a gesture of good will with you before proceeding with a review.

Prior to be recommended to King and Allen, randomly by one of my brothers friends, i used to always buy of the peg suits. He convinced me that i should try bespoke, he had tried one or two of the bespoke companies but recommended King and Allen. I was fed up of feeling underwhelmed with the fit of an off the peg suit, even after alterations, so visited King and Allen on a friends recommendation. I spent time with one of the tailors there describing the look that I wanted, and he was brilliant in guiding me through materials, cuts and finer details. I had a suit made last year. First of all the choice of fabrics and linings is very poor, the fabric swatches are very small, also we were looking at the swatches in a pub (London measuring sessions are arranged in the pub near the Bank tube station), where it was quite dark, it was difficult to imagine what the suit would look like. I am very sorry that you are disappointed with the colour of the fabric you chose. To say that the room was dark is not fair - we provide SAD bulbs for you to view the cloths that recreate daylight noon. We also provide a variety of completed blue suits against which you can compare your fabric. The fabric you chose was the suit we made you. Furthermore, the samples we use are standard sizes that all tailors use. We now offer a service where you can visit our cloth supplier on Savile Row and see a full length if you are unsure. In other words we go out of our way to make sure that you are not disappointed but we can't just give you your money back if you make a mistake. 50 hours of work went into that suit, not to mention the cloths. However, I don't like seeing customers walk away disappointed and I would happily give you a generous discount off another suit as a gesture of good will. I originally ordered my first suit from King & Allen over 3 years ago. I was impressed by the quality of the suit and the service that I received. I particularly like the fact that the suit is bespoke, so fits much better than an 'off the peg' one. Being measured up by a tailor, it also makes the experience of buying a suit more special than in a standard shop. “Shocking”

i have had 2 suits made my King and Allen - both were made at the same time and after about 6 months they are both ready for the bin! The lining is ripping in both jackets, the buttons are falling off and after not a lot of wear they look like a cheap pair of suits - which they are, apart from the price! I strongly would advise anyone thinking of buying one of their suits to think again - they are seriously not worth the money and you can find better off the peg. (read more)

I write this as someone who is looking for a bespoke tailor and researching King & Allen with a view to them taking on that role for me.
One thing I really don't like is seeing business owners dragged in to online debate, whatever the merits or the circumstances. Without fail, however eloquent the businessman, it looks argumentative and unprofessional.
Gentlemen settle their disputes in private and let the talkers talk.
For someone like me, looking for an independent view, to see the business owner replying quite forcefully makes me question the positive reviews - I know he posts on the Internet and I cannot help but wonder if he has posted some of his own reviews.
I hate to say it but Adam - you've made it too difficult for me to trust you as a first time customer.

Ordered a suit for my wedding, paid £50 extra for express service. After 6 weeks suit was ready for fittings, had 3 fittings, after the 3rd fitting I received a call to say they could not alter my suit anymore it had been made wrong so can give me a refund, this was 2 weeks before my wedding. I would like to apologise once again for the poor service you received from my company. Your review makes very uncomfortable reading for me and my team, but I must confess that sometimes we do make mistakes. In your case it seemed that everything that could go wrong did go wrong. We offered you a refund really early on so as not to cause you any further stress, but you insisted that we made you another suit which we were of course willing to do. I am disappointed that you felt you received a 'half hearted' apology. This I'm sure was not the case. We are very quick to admit fault here at K&A, and we always try our absolute best to rectify any errors we have made. My suits were ready within 3-4 weeks and fitted first time. They looked, and continue to look, brilliant. I have had several comments from people about the quality. I can't talk highly enough of the way K&A guided me through the purchasing my first bespoke suit and made the whole process a pleasure. The suit I ended up with was perfect for my requirements and sits on my tall/slim frame beautifully. I got my first ever tailored suit made through King and Allen. From beginning to end the experience was a pleasure. Detailed consultancy, friendly staff and a great looking suit. I tried a couple of different companies but K & A's service was quick and excellent and when I went back to collect my suit it was spot on. I have just picked up my suit made from the excellent Holland and Sherry cloth. I am extremely pleased with the final result. I had the initial consultation/fitting and subsequent 'baste' fitting in Birmingham and the final two fittings in Nottingham. I have no problem with the fact that I had an extra fitting to make sure that it was absolutely spot on; well done to Carl for insisting on this when he could have taken the easier route.

I've had two appauling experiences with King and Allen. Both times they seemed totally incapable of measuring and fitting a jacket correctly, suit trousers not a problem, but jackets they are just hopeless at. The amount of time taken for the initial fitting and then to try and correct the error was incredible. After four unsuccessful attempts at a fitting the tailor finally suggested he start again - this was seven months after first placing the order. Total shambles.

Dear Mr Millbanks,
This seems a rather unfair review bearing in mind you once wrote the following to us: "Just a quick note to say thank you for my suit. The meticulous attention to detail and excellent tailoring exude quality. A credit to the amount of work that went in to it. I will definitely be back for more.".
You know we are capable of providing a good service and yet you make no mention of it. Furthermore, you chose to change to a different tailor so in effect you were starting again. We tried really hard to make you happy but you were still not satisfied. So we gave you a full refund. And yet you do not mention this either. I am the first to admit that we make mistakes but they are few and far between and when we do we make sure we do our best to fulfill your wishes or offer you a full refund. What more could we have done for you sir?

I totally support K&A's right to respond to a harsh reveiw, to put their side of the story, especially where it seems that a reveiwer has been economic with all the facts. I am not put off by this at all, and I have never had anything made by K&A!

King & Allen are a first class company. My suit is vastly superior to any off-the-peg products I've bought (e.g., Hugo Boss, Aquascutum and Austin Reed) and I have been disappointed by a bespoke suit made by another tailor in the past.

I went to King and Allen for a suit to wear to various wedding throughout the year. The level of customer service was amazing, the cost was great and the comfort and fit of the suit is perfect. I don't think it is possible to get a better value bespoke suit anywhere, many thanks. (read more)

After a fitness drive my husband had lost a lot of weight and as he was so petite it was very difficult if not impossible to find an off-the-peg suit to fit.
Thank goodness King Alan came to the rescue, they could do the fitting in Birmingham where we live and in plenty of time for my sister's wedding.

I've had an blazer and independent waistcoat so far made by King and Allen - who undoubtedly stand out by being throroughly polite at the customer interface. Credit is given for this.
However, neither of those items were without flaw. At my original order, the jacket was a hideous fit as was the waistcoat, the latter needing to be totally remade. The jacket lining has since come apart despite only very modest wear which they quickly fixed without charge whilst being only about ten months...

I had a suit made there and had an exceptionally bad experience. Firstly, the wait for the suit was endless. After my first appointment, where measurements were taken, they promised a first fitting in 4 weeks time. After 6 weeks I called to get a status update, and they were still not finished. It took another 2 weeks to have that first fitting. Lots was wrong. They promised 2 weeks for a new fitting, and again it took much longer. It took 4 fittings and 3 months in total for them to... <br/>Firstly, I am sorry that you are disappointed that it took 4 fittings and 3 months to get your fit right. However, it is quite normal, even on Savile Row, for the process to take 4 fittings and 3 months - especially on a difficult body-shape - and especially on your first suit. You would have been told this when you placed your order and to suggest you were told "4 weeks" is simply not possible - this must have been a miscommunication.
<br/>I admit that it usually only takes 1 or 2 fittings, but tailoring is an art not a science and surely it's commendable that we didn't let you take your suit away until you were happy with it.
<br/>
<br/>I am sorry to hear that a button has fallen off and that some stitching has come away. The suit is entirely hand made, and small errors such as these do occur. We would of course rectify these issues for you, as well as giving the suit a good once over, if you were to bring it back to us.
<br/>
<br/>In conclusion, it saddens me that you say that you wouldn't come back to us. It sounds like you have not had the smooth ride we normally provide and I would love the opportunity to prove this to you if you were to return - especially since we now have a correct set of measurements for you. Recently purchased a 3 piece suit from King and Allen and cannot be more happy with it.
The entire experience has been brilliant from the first measurement, to the last fitting before finally receiving my suit. Especially considering the price. the standard of the materials and finished product is excellent value for money.
If you're looking for Saville Row quality but at an affordable price King & Allen are the one for you.

Dear Sir
I would first like to apologise that your suit did not reach the high standards we aim for when it was relined. At the time of you writing your review we were, and continue to be, in email communication with you to get this resolved in a satisfactory way.
You initially came to see us and chose a steel blue lining. You did not confirm your order at this time but instead came back at a future date to confirm your order. At this appointment you changed your lining choice to a baby blue colour. I am very sorry to say that your details were not updated and your original lining option was ordered.
You did have a baste fitting with a partially constructed suit but at this stage the suit was not lined so the error was not apparent. When you came to try on the completed suit you immediately informed us we had not used the lining you requested. At this point we offered to reline the jacket and waistcoat in the correct lining or, if you decided you would accept the suit as it was, we would give you £50 as a gesture of goodwill. You chose to have the suit relined.
The relining of the suit was not done to our usually high standards and all the issues you mention are a direct result of this. I am very sorry for this and for the fact that it got through our quality control. In the time we had available to us after the suit was returned we did resolve the issues to the best of our ability in order that you could have the suit for your wedding.
We have offered to make the suit again and also to reimburse you for the £24.95 postage fee you incurred. We hope to receive a response to our email of 23rd November. If I can help you further please email me directly at jake.allen@kingandallen.co.uk.
