“What a joke”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 03/05/2016

visited pub yesterday waiting staff very helpful and friendly; there were ,10 of us dining, some of the food was not available but was enjoying myself anyway as I was with my family. After the meal some of us ordered sweets, shortly after we were approached by assistant manager demanding for us to leave as our table was booked for a family of 30.The manager had a really bad attitude very argumentative her approach very rude and confrontational, we at that point was told to sit in the gardens out of the way and eat our sweets out there What a way to treat customers certainly will not be ever returning there. What school of charm did she get her management training from.

“Booked a table for 16 as a celebration for a family...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by jamiewood on 08/09/2013

Booked a table for 16 as a celebration for a family birthday. Was told we could have 4 separate tables, which we were ok with (not thrilled but understandably a large booking). Arrived at 1:15 and waited 20 minutes for an order to be taken. 2 people ordered starters, which arrived in 15 minutes. 45 minutes later our meals started arriving. The food is nothing special and the table staff seemed utterly terrified. After finishing our meal, we then waited another 15 minutes to order dessert. The majority of the group ordered red velvet cheesecake whilst the rest ordered various other desserts. 20 minutes after this order, we had a young waitress come out and say that they had run out of red velvet and that we would all have to change our order. We asked for a manager because by this time, we were fed up with 2 fed up children in the party. The manageress came over, seemingly itching for a fight. we explained the issues with the delays etc and her response? -because we had ordered starters on one table, it had delayed the rest of the meal (by 45 minutes?)- even though there were several individual bills , that running out of dessert was typical of marstons and that it was all being done by 1 single person in the kitchens. There was no apology of the sort, her attitude was basically 'tough, you've eaten it and you've got to pay'. I honest thought she was going to ask one of us outside to settle it. We eventually got offered (by a terrified waiter) 20% of each bill and resumed waiting for a pudding. It was another 30 mins of waiting and confusion (2 orders for dessert to take out was delivered on a plate with ice cream twice) we finally all managed to eat our dessert and leave. All in all a terrible customer service attitude for low quality food.

I feel that this is not all correct as seen on CCTV you did arrive at 1.30 and food was taken at 1.38. we follow etiquette on people ordering starters and we were told that all of you wanted to eat together so that is what we did. and that is why the remainder of you waited for your mains Customer service may have been bad to you but also do you get shouted at at your job and if so would you have the right attitude back. I feel that all the facts above are not all correct and the waiter was terrified at the time by you and all the shouting that you did here. We all do our job to the best of or ability and will apologise to anyone who has a bad experience but we also will not accept rude, aggressive customers either.

Thank you for the timely response. I do indeed get shouted at in my job, however i do not shout back as i am a professional manager and i think that a bad attitude helps no one or the situation. I think if the waiter was terrified, perhaps he should have mentioned it to his line manager and asked someone else to cover the tables. My grandma was quite upset at the bad atmosphere and no, she didn't shout but she was intimidated by the aggressive attitude shown

“How to save £200”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 24/02/2013

Having been invited to a Birthday celebration along with 17 other guests it was found upon arrival that seating 18 people together was impossible. This could only be managed by one table of 10 and two tables of 4. None of this was explained when a visit was made to book the meal ! Much consternation ensued but it was decided that no other choice was possible at the time, this situation was soon resolved when the child menu had virtually no choice and the main menu was also limited due it's change in future. No attempt was made by managment to rectify any problem; Thus no meal was taken. £200 pound saved!!!

“Sunday lunch”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 16/02/2013

Service was not too bad, however the food was very disappointing when asked if the meal was OK we made our comments on the food being not up to our expectations and the waitress said she would pass on to the manageress, which did not happen until we made further comments on receipt of the bill and then after some debate agreed on a 20% discount but it was not the discount we were after just a nice meal in a friendly atmosphere which we missed out on and so will not return there again and will not recommend to our friends........

“Xmas dinner at the Forge”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 25/12/2012

Just had Xmas dinner at the Forge Terrible Service, took nearly 3 hours to serve us. Starters not too bad but main meal was awful. Hard vegetables, no flavour, hardly any gravy. Pudding ok. We didn't bother with coffees, didn't want to wait any longer! Waitresses not very friendly.

Hello I would like to know who you were on the day, Everyone was given three hours at there table on Xmas day, unfortunately we had people on the first sitting arriving late so it threw the 3.00pm sitting out. My waitresses are always friendly so not sure what happened there, if you had only asked we would have brought more gravy as that was being sent out in gravy boats as everyone's taste is different so if you wanted more you only had to ask. The veg was how we have to cook when it is being help so may of been not to your liking. If you would like to contact Sarah the manager she would be happy to resolve this situation on 01384 457359

“Worst Service Ever!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by storm4 on 02/07/2012

Have used before and didn't have any complaints. Not sure what has happened, but yesterday we waited 2 hours for our food to arrive. Two of us ordered an item from the specials board, it took them over half an hour to come and tell us they didn't have that and could we order something else! We were a large group and did not expect them to get all our food orders out in one go, but as some of us had to leave earler we ordered first and got our meals after others in the party. When i enquired as to the long wait the waiter really couldn't even think of an excuse. By the time we left, some 3 hours later 5 of our party had only been served their starters and the main meals were just arriving!! Ours was not an isolated problem, other diners were complaining too. I will never visit this plave again and if i ever need to mention the Forge it would be to advise others not to bother going.

“AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by beckiebod94 on 13/05/2012

Me and my boyfriend had been to the forge on many occasions over the past 5 years and never really had a problem until 2 months ago. We decided to have an evening out and the forge seemed like a good choice. We arrived and the pub was cramped! It was a saturday night and so this was expected, we waited over an hour for food and put it down to how busy the pub was and let it go over our heads. A few weeks we decided to go visit the forge again for sunday lunch with my boyfriend's family. Again we waited over an HOUR for food and when we asked a server why there was wait she said that a chef had not turned up on the morning so they were understaffed. If there was a wait on food, customers should have been notified not left hanging around with empty bellies! After filling in an online survey to review the new management at the forge, my boyfriend won a £25 voucher to use when we next visited the forge. We were hesitant but decided to give the forge one last chance. Last night (12/05/2012) we booked a table for 8:00pm and arrived 5 minues prior to find the table we reserved was taken. This wasnt a problem and staff were polite nd found us another table. However it was cramped and I kept being elbowed by the women at the next table! (Yes it was that cramped.) We had to wait half an hour for our food order to be taken and then another hour for our food to arrive, so we didn't eat until 9:30. Again we were not told of any wait on the food and we again asked why the food was taking so long. The manager's reply was "well we have had a couple of big party bookings in" UNACCEPTABLE! It seemed excuses were being made when someone asked why there was a wait on food. We decided not to stay for dessert (McDonalds mcflurry seemed a better option) and paid the bill with the voucher we had recieved. We still complained and went home and filled in a survey to express how disappointed we were with the service. This evening my boyfriend recieved a phone call from the manager about the review we had left. She was extremely rude and shouted at my boyfriend during the phone call. When he expressed he would take his cutom elsewhere in future the Manager's reply was "oh fine! You do that!" This is NOT the way to deal with a customer complaint. I would avoid the forge and its rude manager AT ALL COSTS! they are not worth your custom after the experience we had and we are now going to contact the Marston's company and make a formal complaint! AGAIN AVOID THIS PUB AT ALL COSTS!

“Waste of money ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Ljellis on 05/08/2011

Nice atmosphere but that was where nice ended ! We have been before on a few occasions recently and besides slow service food was passable . Tonight however it seemed to have deteriorated somewhat! The salad consisted of just lettuce ,we had to ask for a better selection and received a 1/4 of a tomato a thin slice of cucumber and a ring of onion! Dismal! All of the meals were sub-standard . We thought the pudding would pacify us but instead of a normal sized slice of cheesecake we received a very small piece! All in all the food was not worth the money and they are obviously cutting corners to save whilst robbing the public blind.

“After booking for Christmas day our expectations were...”

written by on 25/12/2010

After booking for Christmas day our expectations were dissapointingly floored big time, by the quality of food that was placed in front of us.We ordered pate for our starter, presentation left alot to be desired. The apparent blackcurrant accompliment was served in a paper pot which just added to the lack of presentation. The main meal we ordered were 2 duck and 1 steak. The potatoes were cold and all the veg were afloat in water and remained cold and very very bland to the point of being unable to distinguish one veg from the other. My son ended up with steak,3 potatoes and 6 carrots. We were unable to finish our meals and as we were not the only table to complain the poor waitress was taking all the flack. There was no sign of management and no sign of an apology. We were given a refund eventually. After spending £40 a head i was expecting more for my money. The restaurant was the Forge in lower Gornal 25/12.2010.

I have been to the forge in the past with friends and never had any problems until today!!!! family of 8 went along to celebrate my daughters 16th B.day, my sister and myself ordered cheesy BBQ pork after tuckin in to a few mouth fulls i noticed blood in the middle of the pork!, the pork was raw right through and my sisters was the same, i complained to the manager who looked no older than my 16yr old daughter, and was happy to replace for something else. my sister went for the safer option of pasta which was cold when it arrived but we left it at that, my daughter then pulled out a long black hair from her tuna baguette, we complained to the manager yet again who advised us it could not of possibly come from the kitchen as the chefs were male ( BALD MEN!!! ). There was no apology and we were charged full price for the meal. It was a total diaster wished we had stayed home and cooked instead!!!!

“I don't usually write reviews or complain but this...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 03/01/2010

I don't usually write reviews or complain but this place definitely deserves to be avoided, we went to the Forge on the 02/01/2010. After waiting ages for the starters to arrive 2 of the party had theirs then a long gap before the other starters arrived which half of mine was missing. I had the mixed grill with no lamb chops as they had ran out, which had to be sent back because the steak and gammon were cold, it must have been on the side in kitchen for ages, a few minutes later after being reheated in the microwave it was returned! The steak was very tough and extremely chewable, the rest of the meal was not nice and I left more than half (I usually clear the plate). The rest of the party tried to order sweets but had to choose alternatives due to not having half the items on menu.

I can honestly say this is the worst place I have ever been to and left the Forge feeling very hungry. Looking back we should have refused to pay for the meal.

I tried to leave a no star rating for this place but you have to leave at least one (one more than they deserve)

“Female staff member was very polite and our drinks...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by gndaviesuk on 15/11/2008

Female staff member was very polite and our drinks were served correctly. I recommend* eating at The Forge (2 for 1) restaurant at Gornal - the old Poacher ' s Pocket. We went for an unforgetable meal at Saturday lunchtime for a delicious Steak and Ale pie.
The fact that the carpark was empty when we arrived should have told us something about the place '
The pie was as tough as old boots - but did contain some meat because we found some - the chips tasted of stale oil and the mushy peas were flavoured over-whelmingly with gravy flavoured wet stuff.
We were honoured with being asked what sauces we would like with our delicacies - and received a personally hand-delivered (entire) 3 sachets of mayonnaise. Neither myself nor my wife could finish our meals 'not because they were so big - but because we didn ' t want to spoil our Saturday afternoon digestion.
My wife did say something as we left - but I don ' t feel that our comments will change the standard of the food. I know that we had 2 for 1 - but I ' m praying now that that doesn ' t also apply to a dicky belly!

*NOT
