I don't even commute from London, short journeys home along the coast are always subject to cancellations, ridiculous delays at a shockingly consistent rate, not to mention the ghastly prices they charge us and the staff are horrendous (I would use another word but it would be deemed innappopriate) they actually feel like an evil dictator, I have no choice but to use this service and it needs to be replaced very soon, they keep making promises that don't happen and the service is getting worse… Read Full Review

I tried to book from East Croydon to Lewes. I was coming from London Bridge but my travel card took me as far as East Croydon. “Rude Staff, Very Overpriced, Absolutely Appalling Service”

I am absolutely disgusted with Southern Rail. I feel so sorry for anyone who is not lucky enough to have an alternate to Southern Rail. I am horrified at the fact that Southern Rail put their prices up every year yet this is the service they provide. Absolutely disgusting trains. They treat us like we are cattle, trains are so overcrowded that you can barely move. Almost everyday my train is cancelled because apparently the sun is too bright according to BBC news. “Worst train service around London”

I use Southern every working days to go to Brighton and believe me, it is surprisingly consistent on being always delayed or cancelled; one or another due to either signal failure or staff shortages or some other reasons. They return your fare only if they are more than 60min late. Normally they are below 60min late for that reason. “Overpriced and shockingly bad service”

I commute from Redhill to London Bridge every day. In 20 years of commuting I must say that the current service is the worst it has been. There are daily delays, cancellations and chaos both on the trains and stations. The trains are overcrowded and commuters are often treaded like cattle. If any other company was run like this the board of directors would have been removed. This company conducts itself in an entirely unacceptable manner. If I have understood you correctly, there is no 10day rule, you have 28days. See this below from Southern's passenger charter:

Take it to passanger Focus if they still refuse a refund.

15.4 Refunds
All tickets, other than season tickets
If the train you planned to catch is delayed or cancelled and you decide not to travel, you can return your unused ticket (except season tickets) to a station run by the operator you bought it from or the relevant retailer for a full refund. At a station run by us we will give you a full refund immediately if we can. No administration fee will
be charged.
If the train service is running normally and you decide not to travel you can apply for a refund at a station run by the operator you bought it from or the relevant retailer. You must do this within 28 days of the expiry of the ticket’s validity. Our staff will tell you if your ticket is eligible for a refund. You may have to pay an administration charge not exceeding £10.

“Making McDonalds look like the MI6”

Going from Haywards Heath to Brighton I have had 5 punctual trains in the last 3 months. The service is slightly better in the morning, but I guess that around 5 o'clock, employees would rather just have a chilled one. I'm still shocked that "no available driver" is such a commonly used excuse for why the train didn't show up. I wish I got paid to spend the day wamking between episodes of Dr Who. “Sorry, did you just say Southern Rail or Southern Fail?”

14 months have been passed since I first take Southern Rail trains from Sutton to Clapham Junction. To be fair, the morning services are basically punctual this year (2015). However, the return journey in the evenings from London is a continuous nightmare that you cannot wake up. I can't believe Southern and Southeastern are still in business (they probably fake their results when the franchise is due to expire). Southern Trains are without doubt the worst train company in the UK. Their trains never run on time, they have no clue about ensuring that they have enough carriages...and if I hear once more the dreaded announcement that "member of staff has failed to turn up" and consequently the train is cancelled I will scream.
