“Cold and Dirty Trains”

Written on: 12/05/2013

I have been travelling on the West Coastway line from Portsmouth Harbour to Littlehampton and must say that I have never seen trains in such a state. The trains never seem to be heated and occasionally there is a cold gale blowing through the carriage. The trains are always dirty with stains and gum on the floor and the seats are covered in crumbs and general dirt and don't look as if the have seen a hoover for a long time. They most certainly haven't been cleaned overnight I think for the... (read more)

“Expensive and weather-prone”

Written on: 03/10/2012

I commuted with Southern from Surrey to London for two years. They're expensive, and unreliable in bad weather - late in rain, and hopeless in snow. Getting a seat is a luxury, and their compensation for delays consists of vouchers that give a little bit off future train tickets! I've now moved to the south coast and would like to take the train to work, but the fares are just too high. (read more)

“Customer service centre possibly the worst ever?”

Written on: 15/06/2012 by Ady1963 (1 review written)

I am currently trying to resolve a problem I had back in February with Southern Rail - Each email I send can take from 2 to 6 weeks for a response. The replies are always from a different person, so no-one person is ultimately responsible for a particular 'case'. Eventually I was promised that someone would ring me yesterday, but surprise surprise, no-one did. Their phone system can take anything up to 15 minutes for them to answer. I am considering taking them to the small claims... (read more)

“Poor Information”

Written on: 17/02/2012 by Jubey (3 reviews written)

I travel everyday by train and have to get 3 separate trains on my journey. I appreciate the trains don't always run on time due to lack of investment...I'm not sure how much if any money Southern contribute to track infrastructure, so I will not blame Southern for many of my frustrations! BUT they must be able to provide better information when trains are late or even make sure the information boards are updated quickly and accurately so I know what's happening. Very frustrating. The trains... (read more)

“southern is quick and reliable, but very expensive”

Written on: 01/02/2012

hi, i have been a regular commuter from Worthing to Brighton on a daily basis and have always got the train because it is fast! if i need to get to work for 8am in the morning the train would be my first port of call because I know I could get to work on time (train only takes 35 minutes based on no delays) the issue I have found with the trains is that the price for a weekly or monthly ticket has got too expensive and I have had a pay freeze in my company due to the recession, so my salary... “Nice Trains - Poor Customer Care ”

Written on: 28/11/2011

Service is pretty reliable but trains are very overcrowded. For example, the first train out of Uckfield to London Bridge consists of only 2 carriages and the company seems more intent on meeting timetable targets than servicing it's customers. Constructive feedback does not appear to be taken seriously with lot of talk about services being under constant review but there is little, or no, follow-up. (read more)

“Lack of customer care lets this company down”

Written on: 31/05/2011 by garylinaker

I commute on southern railway everyday from Brighton to London. The services generally run on time which is the crucial factor. But the trains are often messy and dirty and without fail most of loos on the train are broken. Not that i use them much but I think it reflects the general state of their customer service and attitude to maintaining a nice environment to sit & work in while on the train. Also the costs is £360/month and for that kind of money i'd expect much better. (read more)

Southern's customer care system (http://www.southernrailway.com/p/contact-us/) is the worst I have ever encountered in terms of response time - I am currently waiting for them to resolve a problem I had back in February. I have received several emails from them (usually after around 2 to 6 weeks of my sending them one each time.) They promise that someone will contact me shortly/that day, but this never happens.
I am thinking about starting a small claims court action against them as figure that is the only way to get their attention.

I had an enquiry of them once so called their "customer care". Surprise surprise, was routed through to a call centre in India. The phone call totalled £6! If that wasn't bad enough (why I could not just have a number direct to the station I don't know), based on the information I was given by them I travelled all the way to the station only to discover I was misinformed and had made a wasted journey! Disgusting service, not to mention the £120 a week rail fare I spend every week is far too big a slice of my (and other people's) wages, but what can we do (?!?), we are just held hostage :(
