“Excellent customer service”

★★★★★

written by TanithPanic on 21/08/2018

I was really looked after by the Travel Assistance team on both my outward and return journeys from Sheffield to London. They made sure I was safely in my seat before they left me and they were also friendly and cheerful which means a lot. The two days I travelled were busy ones for the staff as there were more passengers between Sheffield and London because of Euston Station being closed. The Travel Assistance Team still did an excellent job despite this.

“Very organised !”

★★★★★

written by on 28/09/2015

The 10.35 from York 21/9/15 everyone had to get off train in Derby due to broken wiper blades & onto another, the organisation was excellent with the next train on the same platform, we just got off one & onto the other, the same carriage & seat numbers, when we left Derby we were 15mins late, by the time we had reached Basingstoke we had made the time up for our arrival at 14.39. This is our first time travelling with CrossCountry so we will hopefully travel with you for our weekend breaks in the future.

“Weekly commute made heaven by fantastic first class ”

★★★★★

written by Dulce444 on 24/09/2015

By no stretch of the imagination am I a commuting conniseur. I have a week in leeds every month and have to travel twice via train on a daily basis. This review therefore is a summary of my personal experience onboard both the Edinburgh and Plymouth trains, respectfully for a morning and afternoon journey from chesterfield to leeds. Hand on heart I can say the first class carriage was clean, well groomed and cared for by attentive and savvy staff all throughout the week. No, it's not gilded in glittery gold with whiskey on the rocks and a personal assistant massaging your feet, but it doesn't have to be. Cross Country has its own character of first class and though leather seats would be swell, it perseveres for the price. For the first chunk of the week, one guy was the man of the morning, another the man of the afternoon; both were friendly, down to eaeth and a delight to talk to. They always asked me if I would like complimentary drinks or food and were keen on all details. The second chunk of the week was no exception to the high standards, I didn't catch the names of those working but they took the initiative to go the extra mile with their customer service and that for me made the extra cost worth every penny. The breakfast and lunches provided were superb, I enjoyed my morning croissant with the lashings of jam and butter and starbucks coffee deeply. There were no bad smells, circumstances beyond staffs control or general unpleasantness to affect this rating. It was pleasant and a future service I look forward to in the upcoming months.

“Significantly improved, hopefully can maintain such...”

★★★★★

written by ClareWatson on 20/09/2014

For a long time, the words "this service is operated by Cross-Country" filled me with dread whenever I was waiting to board a train. Now though, this is far from the case. Recent experiences with them have proved that clearly, they accept feedback, and listen to it. The train from my local station was always overcrowded and full to capacity- people literally squeezing in to the gangways. They have introduced a longer train, and there are seats again. It's possible to get a seat without reservation, and what's more, there are spare seats for the whole journey. The new trains also have far more storage space, so you can actually find a space for large bags and cases. They've gone from being one of the most crowded train carriers I've used to being one of the most spacious (at least, in terms of short branch-line operators). Also impressed with their customer service- I booked a space for my bicycle over the telephone, the waiting time was zero to speak to an employee who was friendly, courteous, helpful and well-trained. He also knew the ICAO phonetic alphabet, which seems like a small/obscure thing, but when you are communicating booking references that are strings of letters via telephone, makes it considerably quicker and easier to understand. A telephone call to a call centre that's as quick as talking to someone in person is a rare thing these days, and so the experience was a positive one. Overall, I would say that they're making the right steps to move from being a train operator with a poor reputation into a solid, reliable, and helpful carrier.

My experience this week was terrible so when she wrote her review a year ago XC then must have been abysmal! Their Customer Relations staff are horrible.

“Amazing service!”

★★★★★

written by KathrynHaley188 on 04/09/2014

We travelled as a family of four from Southampton to Oxford for £36.00. When we climbed aboard, there was no one on board the 5 car service. It was lovely and clean inside. The train manager and Trolley woman were very helpful and friendly. The train was comfortable and fast and I recommend anyone travel on this service. What I liked: On board facilities (Toilets, Sun blinds, Luggage racks, Catering, Reservations etc.) and the staff. What I didn't like: The fact that there was a whole first class carriage in a 4 carriage train and the smell from the toilet... I would've liked to know what sort of train I was catching before I made my purchase and what the interior looked like. Thanks for reading my review!

Stafford to Andover - Our return journey was excellent. The station and train staff at all stations and on all trains were so efficient, friendly and polite that they made our journey seem shorter and less stressful. thank you all very much.

My husband are coming to cornwall in June and are considering travelling by rail instead of car, but have been put off by the terrible reviews that your company have been given. Perhaps you can assure me that these derogatory comments are not as bad as they sound and that I and my husband would have comfortable journey with you. We will be travelling from Warrington Cheshire and my husband is disabled and we cannot afford to encounter any problems.

My mother is disabled and I did book journeys for her on Cross Country and also arranged for assistance at the stations as she had to change at York. In my experience arranging the assistance is very good. You need to remember to ask for help getting luggage on board too as well as the wheelchair and travellers. My parents experience of actually travelling by train is that the process works but is highly dependent upon the staff at the stations where you need assistance. It is also dependent on your train not being cancelled because the station staff have to call ahead to change your travel assistance details and sometimes the messages don't get through. For example, Doncaster is terrible, but York is excellent. Newcastle is great, but Hull wasn't good either. No-one was on the platform in Hull as arranged so some helpful students offered to assist my parents instead! In Doncaster the disabled lift was out of order so they had to walk under a disused tunnel with a slippery floor at speed. Then the person helping them forgot them and they would have missed their train were it not for those helpful students. In summary, if the train is on time and the station staff are good, you are OK. Hope this helps.

Go by car, at least you will have a seat and somewhere to store your luggage! Trains are usually too short for the number of passengers wishing to use them and, should the train be delayed, there is a possibility that it will be terminated at an earlier station and you will be asked to de-train and catch the following one. Good Luck!
