I bought this DVD player about 5 years ago, when The Fellowship of the Ring DVD was released. At the time it was a good quality DVD player, and I paid an extra £10 to get it 'upgraded' so it would play DVD's from region 1. I have since found out that their are hack sites available, and this can be done via the remote control for free. It works fine for basic playing of DVD's and MP3's, with a good picture and sound quality. It's easy to set up, and it has been reliable. I have just upgraded to a DVD recorder with built-in VCR (LG RC185), and all is well so far.

Technology enhancements have meant that cheaper players are now available, with a lot more features. The Sony DVD-NS305 DVD player cannot play VCD's or divX, and it sometimes struggles with backup copies or 'homemade' DVD's, because it skips or freezes. I bought a £20 DVD player from B&Q for the kid's bedroom, that didn't have the build quality of the Sony, but it could play anything you threw at it.

It is OK for playing bought DVD's, but cheaper and more advanced players are available if you're into downloading or creating your own films.

I am no electronics buff. I love what consumer electronics do for me in terms of entertainment and an easy life, and I'm pretty good at setting them up and using them when I've got them, but I've never had the urge to find out what all those letters, numbers and symbols mean in terms of performance, function and capability. Some I am familiar with, but lots I'm not. Which left me at a bit of a disadvantage when I went out to buy a DVD player. There were literally scores of the things to choose f ...

I reluctantly bought this Sony DVP-NS305 DVD player from tesco after 3 dansai's none of which worked (must have been a bad batch). So far so good, even though i didn't want to pay £179.99 for a dvd. Plays all my dvd-r's even the cheap disks.
