I am a self proclaimed Ricky fan, I love his work. Not only that, but he is a great inspiration to me, his views are honest and justified, he isn't a fame hungry celebrity, he genuinely believes in a loves his work.
I really enjoyed his previous stand up and when science was announced I got myself tickets straight away. I was lucky enough to get in row 20, so a really good view from the centre of the arena... and am I glad I did.
I had my doubts that he would be as funny as his previous...

Was thoroughly let down. I love Animals and Politics, i thought Fame went a little down hill. Yet Science was awful. Gervais seems to have lost his original style of comedy and replaced it with just toilet humour. I don't mind swear words at all and think they can even be funny in jokes, but his over use of the C word was cringe. Such a shame too because i love his programmes and movies. Overall, Science was rubbish. (read more)

Very disappointing (and for me to feel compelled to review something it means something!). Like many other reviewers I usually really like Ricky Gervais' work, but this just fell significantly below my expectations. Most of the jokes just weren't funny in my opinion; they seemed poorly thought through and lazy, relying on his percieved shock factor rather than actual comedy. I presume there's a danger for comedians who have been sucessfully that after a while they incorrectly assume... (read more)

A foul-mouthed torrent of irreligious, arrogant and plain unoriginal abuse best describe Gervais' 'Science' performance. Completely skewed misrepresentation of Noah's Ark, referring to a children's picture book to lambast the Bible. Surprisingly enough I do not find the thought of raping a grandmother remotely funny. Nor rejoicing in my next-door neighbour dying of hypothermia. I am disgusted with his show and will not be watching again. (read more)

Also being arrogant is part of his act, I find this strange that I have to explain this to people, either you aren't clever enough to realise this or you know this and you generally dislike him or his style, which would make your review bias towards not liking SCIENCE, and there an unreliable one. Either way I find it peculiar that you have taken the time to watch it AND review it.

Like all of his stand ups, there are area's which drag on or are just plain not funny, but when he shine's he is capable of reaching sublime zones which are genuinely world class and where few other comedians inhabit. This is why I love him. He is built for comedy. Facially, bodily voice wise, mannerisms and his imaginery conversations with others are out standing. The scripts can be weak or just plain silly and this can be disappointing. Visually, there is no one to touch him. Also, "off... (read more)

Well thanks god i'm not alone.
I bought the DVD and had been looking forward to it for a long time.
All through the performance I was looking for any excuse to roar laughing. All three previous shows had me in stitches as the were irreverent, witty and very clever.
It almost seemed like this show was unwritten and was done 'off the cuff'. I couldn't believe how poor it was. I'm glad I didn't travel to see the show! Is this a case of performer arrogance leading to poor research of...

It wasn't that bad. I mean, if you're a fan of him, you defiantly have to see this. Otherwise, there are so many other great stand-ups there which are so much better.
Ricky has, as usual, the brilliant improvised way of speaking. The way he rambles on with all the different themes is amazing. And he makes a lot of great points. Another big pluss for me, is the way Ricky can actually change your thoughts on different stuff. ( eg. fat people, religion, terrorist)
So I really had a good...

Very disappointed in Ricky Gervais's show at the Bloomsbury theatre. He looked tired and bored. When he mentioned he didn't need the money we we wondering why he was doing it. There was a horrible video before he came on which I won't even describe. It was a shame because his support act, a Jewish and Welsh comedian (don't know his name) was brilliant. He had more big laughs in his bit than Ricky Gervais did in his whole show (which by the way was really short). Overall a disappointment. (read more)

I travelled from Germany to see the show at Hammersmith Apollo last Friday. I was tremendously excited to have the opportunity to see Ricky live. I absolutely love everything he has done apart from his movie work. Animals, Politics and Fame are, in my opinion, works of a genius. I was thus deeply disappointed after watching "Science". I almost thought that it was not Gervais on the stage. The jokes were not all that funny, he did not take time to develop the jokes which were often limited to... (read more)

Such a disappointment. Really, really poor stand up performance. No real jokes, Gervais seems to think he can get by on just reading out of books and talking about how rich he has become... Ricky, you are only rich because the public spend money on your productions, including coming to see you live. I think the audience deserve a show that he actually put some sort of effort into writing.
Also, i hope Karl Pilkington is getting half of Gervais' money from this show, because about 50% of...

I ABSOLUTELY agree with a previous review on here, I thought Gervais was untouchable before Science. Animals, Politics and Fame were works of brilliance in my eyes, but Science was so half arsed I began to think Gervais had been replaced by a look alike. I suppose all good things come to an end. It's time to step off the stage Gervais, stick to Directing and lets give our money to ROB DEERING - without doubt the best stand up comedian I have ever seen. (read more)

Like many others are saying, this really wasn't good. The previous show 'Fame' was lame because he'd started to talk about himself as some kind of demi-God which, frankly, doesn't connect with the audience. Science goes even further in its disconnection: over half the show was 'me, me, me' and lacked any real tear-inducing or stomach-crunching laughter.

I haved loved pretty much everything Ricky has done, but I couldn't avoid the feeling that he thinks he doesn't need to try anymore. I had high hopes for Science and didn't mind paying a steepish price for a quality performance from a funny man.
Unfortunately he was only amusing in parts and his 'I'm better and richer than you (only joking)' lines are long past their sell-by date. I think his stand up career may be waning. Sorry Ricky.

Brilliant! Totally un-pc and at times, genius. A part where he plays an Insurance rep who speaks on the phone with God over what actually counts as an "an act of God" is cleverly done and I really enjoyed the entire show. A funny and witty performance from Gervais, 90% new material, but even the old stuff I loved anyway.
Lots of negative reviews, obviously from people who are not a fan of Gervais, and/or are cheap. I gladly handed over my money to see my favourite comedians perform the stand up I want to hear, and the joke I love

First the support was dreadful. I don't understand the wisdom of choosing someone like this for an opening act ! And Then Ricky Gervais, who I was big fan of, came on stage and delivered the most lame stand up performance I've ever seen. We booked this ages in advance with high expectations from someone we have always found funny and different. What a disappointment it turned out to be. The support act was weak and then another long break meant we were waiting over an hour in our seats to see the main act, which turned out to be a complacent repetition of not very funny material, (that was supposed to be about Science) reminding us how rich he has become at our expense and spending ages going on about a kids' book he... As with most other people on here, I went to the show with very high expectations and came away thinking 'is that it?' Judging by the polite applause at the end of the show, and not a single shout of 'more', I can only assume the rest of the audience thought the same. Having seen his other 'themed' routines I was expecting 'Science' to at least loosely follow a trend. There are many aspects in this theme which could be funny for a clever performer like Ricky such as the mis-use and abuse of science, stupid science (IgNobel awards) not to mention the rich vein of material in pseudo science like intelligent design and alternative medicine (e.g homeopathy). Loved the early XFM shows. Big fan of The Office, Extras, Animals, Politics and Fame. Sadly the Ricky Gervais show seems to be running out of puff and Science is very humour lite. Being irreligious is a good thing. Wakes people up from the ridiculous and controlling bronze age myths. If your so easily offended why watch a comedian that is known for being offensive. That's like going to KFC and complaining when they don't have fish on the menu. Don't go and seen Frank Boyle your heart might stop!
