Good Points: Art in vibrant colour, cutting edge fiction, dark poetry, and columns by rockers and dopers make this a unique lit mag. It's also had some big, big names, like Jeff VanderMeer and Vince Locke (The Sandman). There's a good mix of literature and commentary, held together by the art. The layout's clean and elegant and the print quality is high, making this appear like one of those coffee table mags, rather than the usual genre fair.
Bad Points: It's only once a quarter, and I imagine the colour art pushes the per unit cost up, so each issue is £7.99. But they're also limited editions, with only 500 copies printed, which makes them luxury artefacts.
General comments: Polluto is the 'anti-pop culture journal', which means they take popular formulae and turn them into something new. The success rate is high, with unique zombie stories, lesbian werewolves and snuff all being subjects of this transmogrification of popular culture. Each issue is themed, and the themes are whacky in themselves, such as:Post-Natal Depression & the MysteronsApiocalypses & Garden FurnitureSex in the Time of VHSQueer & Loathing in WonderlandA Steampunk OrangeThey're also a semi-pro market. Love it!
