The characters in Christopher Brookmyre's, One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night come over as extremely plausible, genuine, interesting (and quite nuts in some cases!). The plot is original and the humour very black. Mercenary-type soldiers think they've got an easy, if somewhat disconcerting task, but they have to pit their wits against a bunch of ordinary, yet resourceful, people. These people decided to accept invitations to a dubiously cast reunion, in a strange setting.
