I am on my 2nd Galaxy. The first one was MK1 1998 2.3 GLX Model and was great on fuel for its age, and only ever demanded the standard servicing parts, It was spacious, my dogs loved it as I have 3, 1 huge dog, 1 medium and 1 small dog who all had more than enough space, The suspension was firm but soft enough to take all the bumps, and it only failed its MOT on an ABS sensor and ring, which I DIY repaired and cost less than £50 for the parts. The only 2 reasons I got rid of it was because... (read more)

BUT the problem was never really sorted and the problem is this, The air con comes on when it feels like it and not when I want it to, If i turn it on it may not work but I can get it to work by turning the heat up to full and then it will kick in,It may then work for 5-10 mins... Not a bad car but I had to pay £60 to get the air con recharged after only 8 months. The garage have put a dye in the system and said if the discharge has been caused by a stone chip then a new system (condenser) will be down to me!
Not very happy about this as I explained that it should perhaps have a guard in front of it. Or even suggested that it may not be fit for purpose. They wouldn't have it and I will await and see. Just a typical poor Ford service for a new car. Purchased from...

I bought my 2.3 Galaxy as a replacement for my Chrysler Voyager and would definitely buy another. Although it was not as well appointed it is an order of magnitude more comfortable on a long journey, much easier to drive (great engine) and the visibility is way better than the Voyager.

I don't like the Ford Galaxy for the reasons stated above, but the dealer service departments are what really hurt. I agree with everything this owner has written. in addition, my Galaxy caught fire, melting the fuse box. I was towed to a number of garages, including a Ford dealer, none of whom would touch the car, as the problem was a common fault! A dealer in Banbury finally agreed to do the work with a resultant cost of £450 for a new alternator and fuse box. Also, I complained that the engine fans were noisy, so they agreed one was faulty and disconnected the other. The cruise control has failed and the automatic climate control display flashes. Ford's customer service is atrocious and I can't wait to get rid of the Galaxy, having had it for 41\2 years!
Written on: 06/12/2005
I totally agree with the poor vision due to windscreen pillars. Also i find that i can't open the window after it has rained as the water blows off of the windscreen into the car. On the positive side, we have just driven through France to southern Italy with three teenage children and it was the best possible car for us to travel in. Loads of room for the children and luggage once a middle seat and a back seat were removed. Our Galaxy travelled 3000 miles and didn't even hiccup. The fuel consumption was astonishingly low and the engine had not used a drop of oil. I think that apart from having to look around that windscreen pillar and not being able to open windows on a wet day, our Ford Galaxy has got to be the most comfortable and reliable family car/work horse that i have ever owned in twenty years of driving.

Does what is is designed to do - carries seven adults or after leaving seats somewhere, can take a three piece suite. Seats are heavy, but easy to fix if you have a strong back. Handles very well for a big van and by using gears, with seats out and air-con off, will mix it with the best of saloon cars on winding country roads - and you can see over walls. More power would make this unbeatable, especailly if fuel use did not increase - 25 mpg average.

I also own a 1998 Ghia X 2.3, and have experienced the same problem with the intermittant brake light fault. I fitted a new brake light switch, and the problem was solved. The problem with the old switch was the contacts inside start to burn, possibly due to the number of operations it has done, also poor adjustment can cause the contacts to arc. A new switch purchased for about £10.00 from a Ford dealer fixed it.

Internal flooding is caused by either the rear washer pipe coming apart in the passenger side door seal, or blocked scuttle drains either side of the bulk head. Both easily fixed in less than an hour.

My Galaxy is a T reg 2.3 Ghia X. I have had similar problems with water entering the vehicle on the passenger side. It has been backwards and forwards to Dagenham Motors in Enfield who very grudgingly did the last job under warranty, which still has five months to run. The rear passenger side window has a mind of its own, caused no doubt by watering entering the ECU. Shortly after buying it (with a 2 year warranty) the auto box stuck in neutral and there have been several other smaller irritations. Dagenham Motors have been unbelievably unhelpful and look upon it as an 'old' car. The car has been back on average once a month in the last five months to try to resolve the water problem. The first time they tried drying out the carpet by running the engine for about three hours with the heater on and used about £30.00 of petrol. Their excuse was that it was the best way to dry it out. The next time it rained the car filled with water again. They quoted me over £200 to replace the pollen filter wher they eventually reckned the water was coming in. When I refused and insisted that it was done under warranty they grudgingly agreed but the old pollen filter was only resealed. If I had paid for it, a new one would have been fitted. The underlay is so wet that it squelches when you tread on it and they will not replace it. After this experience I doubt that I will ever buy another Ford.

useful to hear of these problems. Most of us hate having to return to the garage to get stuff fixed especially with a new car

Be warned - air mass sensor is silly money £200 plus. Only your dealer has it and you need it. Costs Ford £24 to produce and ship to dealer. Fit it yourself in three minutes, no setting up.

We have got a 1.9tdi r reg, having real trouble getting to the bottom of a problem where when the car reaches a certain amount of revs it surges thus not regaining preformance until the engine is reset, had mss air flow meter changed 3 times and the main ecu unit also. Problem still not solved. Really annoying as dangerous when on the motorway and car looses power. Also the air bag light is on continuously.

As of this week I'm driving my second brand new Ford Galaxy, so it can't be all bad. BUT...
I had a 1999 T registered Galaxy Ghia X 2.3 Auto. During the 3+ years and 77,000 miles that I drove it, it suffered from the following:
- repeated air conditioning faults, resulting in it being off the road for several weeks (!), the fitting of 2 compressors and an evaporator. This last required the removal of the entire dashboard, resulting in loads of related electrical problems.
- repeated...

Couldn't agree more!

Driving a 1998 Ghia 2.3 with mileage of 115k km. Had the air-con evaporator changed once and it's now leaking again. Was told that "these things happen" every 2-3 years. Never had this happen in the other 4 cars I bought so i'm a bit sceptical when told this is "normal".

Complained about braking noise and the Ford agent had the discs skimmed. This started a juddering problem that has not gone away - even when the discs were changed. Does anyone know what's wrong ?

The electrics have rendered the car immobile a few times, once because the safety depress feature on the auto meant I couldn't select gears.

It's a very frustrating car but I still like it despite all the faults as it's still a good package. However with patience wearing thin, i might just consider a new Odessey !
Written on: 11/10/2002
Among the several other faults I didn't list was the very same problem of not being able to select a gear on the auto shift because of an electrical problem with the brake interlock.

Sound familiar?

I have a 2.3 Auto Ghia 1999 Galaxy and had the same Gear select problem. Its due to a switch failure on the brake pedal that stops you starting the vehicle in Drive or Reverse (A saftey feature). You have to step on the brake pedal to change gear to Drive but if the switch fails it thinks the brake is not on and hence you cannot change gear. The garage tried to fit a non Ford switch to it but this failed almost straight away...The ford switch has now lasted about a year.

Otherwise we love the car for the space and cruising ability (NOT the MPG though but what do you expect for a big Van sized petrol auto?)

Glad to know that ours is not the only rubbish galaxy on the road, Vibration on front, is hideous and has been reoccuring since the 3rd month of ownership and Ford cant fix it, uneven tyre wear second set on front, 2 new gear boxes, numerous drive shafts, subframe adjustments, lost count of other minor faults, too badly shaken after a trip out in it. Computer has mind of its own, registers no petrol when it has fuel, now doesn't beep on reversing or when close to objects, very noisy air conditioning, has no get up and go, incorrect timing. Have for 2 years 'asked 'Ford for replacement, suprise suprise they are still fixing it! About to make a court case for fair play, car was bought from new but is not luxury travel, nor engineered for living, nor built to last as advertised. Do Not Buy One. But would help my cause if your problems were the same and printed here. Car is 2.8 Ghia Auto reg Y

Air con went wrong on my X reg TDI last year. The garage couldn't fix it for a while just when we needed it for our touring holiday. Eventually the air con kind of fix but much noiser and dash rattle since.
Now brake judders when doing around 70. Keep taking it back and they kept saying they couldn't find anything wrong.
Anyone had similar problems or other problem I need to look out for.

As author of the original review, just returned out of curiosity...

As far as the problem with vibration when braking from high speeds is concerned, replacing the front discs worked. But each time it recurred after a few months. As I said, I wasn't paying because the vehicle was leased with a maintenance contract - it would have made me very poor otherwise!

I had a further vibration problem which started at about 2.5 years old and was unrelated to the braking problem. This improved slightly after having new track rod ends and new tyres fitted.

I had to argue with the garage who said they could find no problem, but a test drive with the Service Manager soon persuaded them. I went through this rigmarole 3 times, but the vehicle was returned to the leasing company before it was fixed. The service from this Ford main dealer was awful, bordering on the incompetent and possibly fraudulent - I will never do business with them again.

Richard, would imagine your driving Nissan by now. 2.8 1997 brake vibrations is caused by a problem during disc construction. Discs are on the dealers shelves too soon after production(still warm in boxes)They should be weathered before being machined.
Re customer service problems: Ford UK have a dept that will listen, be honest, their dealers don't question and makes your local service manager notice you as a person who just gave them £15000.........The telephone number is in your phone book under small claims court - give them a call, I've found my dealer sees reason every time.

Galaxy Ghia 1.9 TDI 130PS, bought brand new July 03. In first 3000 miles I have experienced brake problems. On gentle braking downhill the front nearside brake grabs, and vehicle pulls to nearside violently. One occasion on the A30 along the edge of Dartmoor, with over 1 ton of caravan on back, miles on clock 1300, lucky to recover it without going off road. At just over 2900 miles it happened twice in one day, second time put me off the road, and hit a granite block. Damage to rear passenger door over £1000. Ford says as they cannot recreate the problem there is no fault. Ford customer service helpline absolutely atrocious just received my phone bill from three calls to them, where you are put on hold "sorry all out customer service operators are busy please hold" cost me over £5, just to get through. One suggestion by call service operator was that as it had been back to the garage three times if I wasn't happy that it could not be found that I paid normal service charges and let the garage have it for an extended period for tests. What at nearly £50 an hour they must be joking. So much for the "Ford Experience".

I like the car, but have lost all confidence in it due to this braking problem.

I have written to Ford HQ listing my complaints, and mentioned in the letter that a copy is being lodged with my union legal department as possible protection in the event of legal action against me if I kill someone due to this fault, as Ford say the vehicle is not faulty.

A worried Galaxy owner. As this is being written have received a recall on it as there is a curtain airbag wiring fault.

Have a 1999 T reg 2.3 Auto Zetec. Experienced severe juddering from front braking at speed, dissappeared after replacing discs but reoccured 3 months later. Had to have 2 (TWO!) Wiper Motors fitted in 26 months at over £300 each.

I have a 1998 2.3 Ghia X that I have owned since May 2001, it was bought on the Isle of Wight with only 23k on the clock. When bought the car was immaculate. Within weeks of having it problems started occuring with the cruise control, it went back several times to the dealership and each time it failed within a matter of days. I eventually looked at it myself and found the vacuum hose behind the NSF indicator was split, Once I retermintated the hose, problem went away, 3 years on, still as right as rain.

Never had the problem with braking as mentioned elsewhere, but the aircon has stopped working, told by fords it was the evaporator and wanted £1,100 to fix!

Also dogged with problems with CD changer, always skipping disks and throwing up ERROR 5 can live with that, just annoying!

Otherwise, car very good, now reached 66k on the clock and has never broken down (mechanically) and on my third set of rubbers for it.

I have a Galaxy 1.9TD, 2002 model. It has air conditioning problems. Now isolated to a "part" that is required to effect a fix. This will be done by removing dashboard etc.. However the part is on a "back order" and is now three weeks overdue. A common fault, a common part and still the delay! On top of that, the dealer clearly does not understand the issue and Ford is a pain when it comes to after sales "service". Just try complaining ... it's never their fault, always the dealer and vice versa. Good job it's a company lease .. I wouldn't put my own money into one.

After applying hand brake on T reg auto galaxy, I was unaware keys could be removed and it was not quite in park, well you guessed it when disks cooled and shrunk the vehicle rolled away. The new galaxy locks the keys in the ignition when the auto box is still in gear, im told its an improvement so are they saying the old system is dangerous - anyone else had this problem?

I have a Galaxy 1.9 TDi on which the air con has gone kaput 5, yes 5 times. Incredibly according to Ford these occurances have involved different parts, condenser, pipes, compressor. Latest is a switch. So now the car is out of warranty and we're facing a £300 bill(after paying Ford £75 for telling us what's wrong). And yes we have a serious vibration problem that happens while accelerating at approx 50mph.Does this sound familiar to anyone???

Bought 51 plate galaxy with 19,000 miles from dover court ford what a pile of junk - needed new gearbox after many returns to workshop at witham , where they had to take it to chelmsford to do work, then they bent drive shafts and had to go back yet again , then engine to transmission module went wrong, then more problems with drive shafts ,in between all this arguments disputing who was going to pay as service history turned out to be dodgy prior to my purchase so ford and dovercourt at loggerheads ,vibrations again told wheels or tyres on test run with service manager so had them checked no problem with either turns out to be drive shaft again , then at 57,000 sold a 3 year ford protect warranty at £750.00 only to be told four months later mechanical failures not covered at over 70,000 miles so issued county court summons and they refunded when judgement was to be entered , due to the many faults and countless times it was in gave up and traded it in for a nissan tino and boy what a result what a good car and service top notch , after 25 years of fords it now handles luvley best thing happened to me with cars lost £4,000 on galaxy

The handbrake on the new galaxy is a joke its unsafe and untrust worthy.

My new Galaxy (2009 plate) rolled into another car and a bank after being parked up with the handbrake on. The dealer claimed that there is nothing wrong with the handbrake. Hundreds of pounds worth of damage. Mechanic claims the level needs to be pulled up about a foot (way beyond just biting point).

My Ford Galaxy MPV is an older model - 1997 2.3 petrol Manual. I have three kids and the space is fantastic. We use it to day trip on Motorways and down country lanes. It does guzzle the juice when pushed at Motorways speeds.
I also have the airbag warning light recurring problem and also a few annoying squeaks from the underbody and rear door.
Altogether, I still like it and would certainly consider buying another - but certainly second hand - the retail price is out of reach.

I have sentiments about the Ford Galaxy that are reflected pretty much in several of the comments written in other articles here, and I own a late 2001 Zetec, petrol manual model. The seats can be a bit awkward, but manageable. On the whole, I am content with this vehicle, about which I knew little before I purchased it. (read more)

I have a 1999 Galaxy. I do high mileage in it each year and rate it very highly. I was driving at below 40 MPH and a pidgeon flew past my car clipping he driver door mirror. It dropped off and cost £250 to repair. I had to drive round London rush hour with a mirror hanging off by the wiring.
Also, I have a dented wing. would anyone know if the driver wing unbolts or is there any welding / bonding involved. If they do bolt off where can I buy one from?

We have a 2001 1.9 TDI Galaxy. We also had peeling door handles. The local Ford garage agreed this was a fault and replaced them. The new handles are fine. The car is now 13 months old and the fan has just stopped working on settings 1,2,and 3 (4 is fine). Coincidentally the front wing has just been replaced as my wife drove it into a post (even with parking sensors). I suspect the two may be related. Our mileage is over 45 so I don't understand why most other reviews get such poor mileage. We purchased ours from Belgium for £4k less than our local garage and so value for money is very good.

I've had my 2.0 litre Ford Galaxy Aspen (with air con) for over 4 years. In that time it's done 43000 miles, including 3 times the length of France - twice to Spain over the Pyrenees, and once to Corsica. It's never broken down. The worst repair was to replace the electric windows control unit. It's located in a well under the front passenger seat, which filled with water in heavy rain. That cost £180.
With the back seats out, I've taken my daughter's bed to her flat, taken an 8x6 foot shed...

i am hopefully about to purchase a second hand Galaxy and I found your comments most encouraging. This is because my father is nearly housebound and we're getting something that can take us all out at the same time. Is the passenger seat easy to manouver a dead weight into? as getting in and out of an ordinary car s very difficult. We have hired previously three different mpv's (Sintra, Sharan, and a fiat?) and found the sintra brilliant and the sharan not too bad for getting in and out of the car.Did you get a new galaxy after you sold your old one?

I've only had my Ford Galaxy MPV two weeks and am delighted with it. I imported it through a UK company and saved a massive £5500! The car is roomy, nippy and v.economical. It came with extras already included. I chose to buy from Ford a one piece carpet which goes on top of the rear carpets. It only cost £20 and will save the usual wear and tear caused by three childeren. I've no complaints at all (read more)
