Rubbish boiler 2 and a half year old boiler, problems began just after the 2 year warranty period had ended. 4 expensive call outs too british gas to repair, due to the boiler leaking - no hot water / loud banging noises coming from the boiler , and now we cannot turn the heating off. the boiler was fitted by persimmon homes for a new build property. So much for thinking we would not have any expensive bills or repairs to pay. icos in my opinion are rubbish and there boilers are... (read more)

I don't normally bother reviewing products but in the search for an instruction manual I found these awful reviews. My boiler was fitted in 2005 by my father when I moved into my home. Since then I have had no issue other than the condensing pipe leaking which was due to the pipes freezing outside (as told by my brother who works for my dad). Anyway, some lagging on the pipes outside sorted that out straight away. I have found it to be reliable and efficient and trust my father when he tells... (read more)

I have 6 of the above boilers in a block of flats. The problem is customer service. My local heating engineer was unable to identify the problem and spoke with the Ideal engineers 7 or 8 times on 3 seperate visits in an attempt to resolve the problem. They gave him instructions to check various things and then advise him to to change 3 or 4 parts none of which solved the problem. Ideal are now sending out their own engineer at a cost of £245 although they promised to refund half that fee if... (read more)

On Monday the heating did not come on suspected that it had lost pressure but no such luck. I checked the usual and traced it to the main PCB transformer which has an open circuit primary winding. Checked the internet for info and found loads of reports of problems involving the main PCB. The boards are available from eBay for £180 but due to the current cold snap I could not wait 2 or 3 days. I rang RU Cold in Heaton for a price but the guy there could not be bothered and insisted that I... (read more)

Getting a boiler fitted is a serious piece of expenditure, which in my experience generally takes two days of an expensive gas fitter's time if you include flushes and refills. Because of this, you'd be reasonable in expecting that a boiler will give untroubled service for many years.
You'll be lucky.
My Ideal ICOS was fitted by Barratt's back in 2007 when the house was built. It's currently permanently on, provided lashings of unwanted heat and burning gas at a rate of knots (the...

UPDATE April 15 2011: Given the problems we were having, we though it would be a good idea to take out a service contract with E.ON, who will fit a new boiler if yours is beyond repair (I fear that day is coming). They sent an engineer to inspect the boiler. He found that it was leaking gas internally and promptly capped our gas supply. Remember, this boiler is LESS THAN FOUR YEARS OLD.

<br/>Time for that Worcester-Bosch, I think.

We had our Ideal Icos He15 boiler fitted via a government grant in Sept 2007 and have had nothing but problems ever since. In 2010 we have had 3 call-outs since March this year.
The call out fees are extremely expensive at £240 and are only valid for 30 days apparently should you have another problem.
As we our Pensioners this is a disgrace.
Almost every part has had to be replaced at one time or another - obviously these boilers are below the standard you would expect and would not last...

i had an ideal icos fitted on recommendation of the plumber and what a mistake, in two years i have had a new fan, thermostats and now a brand new heat exchanger so basically it is a new boiler i do not expect it to last much more than another couple of years and that is after replacing a 25 year old original boiler with this lump. The engineer told me that they are only made to last out of warranty and then a bit, not like the old ones to last for ever........ (read more)

I have an icos 24he system boiler that has been ok but yet has suffered from a couple of common failures. Luckily I have an Engineering background so I have repaired these faults without having to spend huge amounts of money but there are faults that seem to let the brand down.
I have just had to replace the main PCB (control unit) after the boiler died suddenly and find that the new units are ORANGE and are designated version v9. There has obviously been a design weakness in this unit...

My boiler came with our new build house by Bellway 5 years ago has broken down continually since guarantee ran out leaving us with no hot water or heating for weeks on end depending on how quickly parts could be obtained and fitted.
Would describe it as rubbish. Latest problem was when the boiler started leaking from underneath causing water damage to the wall and worksurfaces. Am now replacing it with hopefully a Worcester Bosch fitted by seemingly reputable company (not B.G).

Along with everybody else after about 15 months use the pcb has gone not impressed .....Boiler manufacturers should give all boilers a 5 year waranty ,i wonder if the pcb might last a little longer if they had to pay to replace it ..... Dont buy (read more)

My ideal icos boiler was installed in July 2007. It has developed minor faults i.e replacement of the pump and converter. Within 2 months of their replacement the PCB Board caved in. This will cost £180 plus v.a.t and an additional £50 to get it fitted. This boiler is a complete and utter rubbish. It's a fraud, easy money spinner manufactured by some incompetent IDEAL Boiler engineers. I had my previous boiler for 11 years at previous address. I never for once serviced it and it went on and on and on. If you wish to save your money, time and peace of mind run a mile from IDEAL icos boilers.

I have an ideal icos boiler fitted in my house which is three years old. Up until now i have had no problems with it, but it broke down a week ago and an engineer told me it was the pcb. It has been a week now and i still have no heating or hot water as i am still waiting for the engineer to come and fix it. I was told it would be three working days for the part and then when they had time to come. The engineer also told me that when the pcb goes it can take out something else so chances are... Ideal Icos HE 15 boiler came with our new build house purchased in April 2008.
Boiler's PCB failed in January 2010. Full service carried out after one year of owning property.
The boiler was installed in September 2007 so out of manufacturers 2 year warranty so would have had to pay £200 for new PCB. Luckily, the house came with a builders 2 years warranty which covered the boiler so did not have to pay for repair.
Ideal engineer came out to replace PCB and said the board I had in was...

Beware of servicing charges (£250 for an 'Ideal' call out) and unreliability of Ideal Icos boilers. Had some trouble with ours. Wouldn't recommend them as a reliable or cost effective boiler. (read more)

I have had similar problems with the PCB (primary control board) on my Icos HE15 - a hefting great chunk of circutory that has broken twice now with explanation (its not even a wearing part). Ideal say this is not a known problem. If your buying a new home ask the builders nicely to put a wood burning stove in you will be better off!! (read more)

I've had a Ideal Icos HE15 boiler fitted in a house less than 4 years old. I am currently waiting to have the PCD board ( £180) replaced for the secomd time. I think there has been some kind of modification to the PCB board but Ideal say it is basically no different and have denied that there is a serious problem with these boards. As the first board melted I think this is a dangerous fault. Needless to say, I don't recommend it. (read more)

if the boiler is banging then either the condence trap or condence pipework is blocked or the circulation pump has gone, the ideal icos is a good boiler and if you know your job these can be repaired easy, if you want expensive bills then call british gas if not call your local ideal boiler specialist. you will find there deatails on ideals website.
