“Terrible Customer service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by KKum on 09/02/2024

I bought a water softener and I am still within the warranty period. My kitchen cabinet where the softener has been installed started showing signs of water damage. I complained to the Harveys customer service and after a lot of follow up, an engineer came to review the damage. The engineer advised that the model which I had was recalled by the company and the customers were given a replacement as this water leak was identified in this batch of water softener. He then replaced the softener and asked me to contact the Remedial department to fix the damaged cabinet. It has been now more than 3 months and I am still chasing the remedial department and customer service but no resolution has been provided apart from sending me from one department to another. Really disgusted with the service and would advise to be careful while choosing the service.

“Faulty Installation caused Water damage & mould on 2...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 21/12/2023

A faulty copper pipe installed caused water damage over 2 floors of the house while I was on vacation. This soaked walls, carpets, fuse box and various electrical switches over 2 floors. On reporting this, I was told that no one was available to conduct repairs for another 2-3 weeks, and would incur a hefty callout charge plus materials. Furthermore, that copper piping which normally has a lifetime of 70-80 years was only guaranteed for a year. Mould developed while I was convalescing from surgery affecting carpets, bedding and the entire contents of wardrobe, putting the bedrooms out of bounds. No action was taken following their eventual assessment of the damage, saying as repairs were likely to cost over £2000 it was with their insurers but refused to back this up with reference numbers or contact details of the insurance company.

“Break of trust and honesty”

★☆☆☆☆

written by SatKum on 07/07/2023

Highly disappointed and break of trust and honesty. I recently ordered a softener with a filter and taps. It was installed on 29th June 2023. Due to unforeseen circumstances we are moving out of the house and staying out of the country. So, we have to cancel it and I already notified the team about the cancellation of the items on 3rd July within 3 days from the installation. The salesperson sold the product to us by saying that we can cancel the agreement within 14 days of cancellation or use their 90-day money-back guarantee to get the full refund. They never mentioned about the filter or taps or about any exclusion and all they said was you will get a full refund. I have been talking to the aftercare team from Monday for the past 4 days about the refund and no proper response. Now the person I spoke with in the aftercare team is saying that they will not refund the money for the taps and the filter. I also spoke with the manager who was very rude and unkind and said that he won't do anything and his decision is final. The salesperson who sold me the products didn't mention this nor did the quote/agreement very clearly state this. The quote only lists a list of 6 goods and prices for them but doesn't tell which ones are refundable/non-refundable nor which one is consumable. When I look into the quote/agreement section 9.1 says "The Customer has the right to cancel this Agreement under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 within 14 days after the Equipment has been delivered. The right of cancellation shall not apply to any consumable products" but nowhere it says which one is a consumable product nor explains that. Also, the salesperson sold the taps saying that it is £516 and she is reducing the price to £390. But after the issue, I found that the same tap is only sold for £350 on Harvey's website. For your note, the tap I ordered is currently not under sale or on offer on their website. Clearly, they mis sold it to me making me believe I get a discount. Since I canceled the order within the 14 days period under the Consumer Rights Act., I expected Harvey's to refund the full money. In addition to these rights, Harvey's website also says that "Harvey's are happy to refund an order you have placed mistakenly, or where the wrong item has been ordered, up to a period of 14 days after you have received the order" Without looking into any other companies in the market, I went for Harvey's because of its reputation and good name. I expect Harvey's to uphold trust, loyalty, and customer values and concern and it is disappointing to go through this process and how customers are badly treated with contempt. I hope Harvey's understands my situation and arranges the due refund and helps to ease this situation. Going forward it would be helpful if this is clearly explained to the customers by the salesperson and the quote clearly mentions it so that situations like this can be avoided.

“Waste of Money ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Apadams on 25/04/2023

Truly terrible product - Save your money Truly terrible product. We noticed that it had stopped working during the trial period, it took harvey 4 weeks to send an engineer out who told us that "yeah sometimes they block up, nothing you can do really". It took maybe another 2 weeks to stop working again. I have since asked for it to be removed or as a minimum get an engineer out again, this was 4 weeks ago. I have sent ,multiple emails and made multiple phone calls and I am still waiting to hear from them. The have stated that because it's now out of the trial period they can't offer a refund. I will be taking legal action as I have currently spent £2,000 on a product that does not work.

“Poor Customer Care”

★★☆☆☆

written by Vino7 on 24/11/2022

Hi ,Harvey customer care service is very poor. I had a very bad experience from them. After i purchased my Harvey water softener in six month’s time the lid was not working. I have called a couple of times and reported the issue and the response was that someone will call me back. After a long wait i called them again and asked a reference number or proof of my fault report as an email and the lady who picked the call in the technical service area was very careless and unsupportive. After explaining the bad service she did not care to take any measures . Instead of offering a solution she was okay with me giving a negative review.I am very disappointed with her service and do not understand how a staff can be so irresponsible to their customers especially like Harvey as they claim to be one of UK’s best water softener companies. Staff attitude is like once you have purchased an item they don’t care at all . Please always keep in mind before you buy this product you are never treated the same as before you buy their product. I am not sure whether the company management is aware of these sort of staff behavior. .very unhappy about the service .

“Very poor customer care if things go wrong”

★★☆☆☆

written by Lewis415 on 13/10/2022

Salesman was good, plumber (Charley Hendrix was lovely). They did not tell me before installation that there would be an overflow at front of the house spilling buckets of water. Was told that he could repair it easily by putting a ball joint in. Harvey's didn't allow him to. Unsightly water still spilling from a high building (not discreetly into a drain like they initially said it would) onto the public. Neighbours complaining. Made Complaint which was ignored. When I call always passed from pillar to post then fobbed off numerous times. No attempt to resolve. Sought legal advice from solicitor. Was told I can repair myself and claim money back from them based on the fact they did not tell me that would happen re water spillage from overflow. I purchased equipment outright so could not get rid of it. Very disappointed in the company. On top of that my phone blocked one of their numbers and marked it as spam. Very poor after care despite it is still under warranty. I wouldn't recommend to a friend. Nightmare.

“1 star because I can't give less”

★☆☆☆☆

written by RMBJT on 10/03/2022

The installation had a leakage which resulted in damage to wooden work in the cupboards. This was acknowledged by their engineer but It has been 2 months and I am still waiting to hear from their team. I have been chasing up every week and have received a standard response. I wonder when will it be resolved and this may eventually end up bearing the repair cost for the damage which was confirmed and acknowledged by their engineer. You may not have to go through the pain if all goes smooth but in case things go south then you are at the mercy of God knows who.

“Poor After sales and Promises not met”

★☆☆☆☆

written by shriakhilesh on 03/02/2022

I am still awaiting to receive promised inventory and add ons promised at time of order which were due with installation done on 20- Dec-2021. It has been over 6 weeks now with me regularly following up on emails and on phone, with often hanging up phone after waiting for over 20 mins without answer. I have now fully run out of salt in the very first month after installation. While I have no issues with the product, I am concerned with the price being on a higher side and also the after sales/ customer service which haven’t met my expectations. I am therefore inclined to discontinue with the Softner when the 3 month trial period ends. Can you please escalate the matter, which I was unable to on phone as phone was picked up after multiple attempts and long wait by someone in finance and was asked to contact you or after sales. I intend to log a formal complaint on my behalf if there is a channel within your organisation and convey my message to discontinue to concerned departments. I have repeatedly emailed to customercare and feedback emails but still awaiting to hear back, unsure if these official channels are monitored as there has been no acknowledgement. Really frustrating!

Called again on 10th and was promised a call back with an update but never heard back. They have ignored several emails and simply pathetic. A legal claim is on the way!!!

“Terrible After Sale Service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by navidmodhej on 07/12/2021

I ordered 5 pack of Harvey Arc salts on 22 Nov. Didn't receive anything after one week so phoned the customer services and was advised that my order wasn't registered properly and that it was all sorted then and I would receive it in a few days. 4 days later and still nothing received, so phoned customer services again and was advised this time that my order was with DHL which was dealing with a backlog at the point. So contacted DHL myself and found out that they had attended Harvey's warehouses a week earlier but wasn't given the order as it wasn't ready. So nothing delivered after 11 days, had no communication whatsoever from Harvey regarding the unusual delay and was told two separate things when I tried to contact them myself. Today is 15 days after my order and I'm yet to receive it. So I'm left with a £2k device without salt, dealing with a business which clearly don't care about their customers after they manage to sell their products. Please please please consider this before investing such big amount on a softener as you will be tied to the provider for after-sale service.

“HORRIBLE installation and after care case”

★☆☆☆☆

written by syed.rehanhaq on 31/10/2021

HORRIBLE installation and after care case. I was told more than a week ago that for the 2nd visit, Harvey engineers are not available and the earliest they can visit is on Saturday (11/09). I cancelled all my plans to make sure that I am available for the engineer visit. I got a call from the customer care team on the day that the engineer will not visit and that new engineer will be scheduled next week depending on availability. This is highly unacceptable and frustrating, I've bought this product for a month now and paid more than 2k GBP on the installation day as I trusted Harvey's reputation. The softener has barely been used and I am now regretting my decision to go with Harvey Water softener rather than much cheaper alternatives in the market. I was so convinced about the quality and care of the product that I referred it to my brother as well which I will definitely not do in the future. I was charged 291.00 GBP + VAT for a faulty installation and not even fixed on the 2nd attempt. My property is a newly built house and it is only 3 years old and now my kitchen cabinet is ruined and swollen from the leak. The customer care representative who spoke to me yesterday confirmed that she will send me an email with all that we discussed on the call, which I also didn't receive.

“Shocking Service to a Pensioner!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Bill338 on 13/10/2021

My mother is a pensioner. She got the system installed. It developed a fault very quickly and damaged her kitchen. Harvey promised that they would cover the repair and refund the remaining costs. Months and months pass by with lots of calls and emails and just get told they will investigate and get back to us and of course, nothing happens. How they can treat customers this way is horrible. I have again called, emailed and chatted to them online and if things aren't resolved, I will be forced to start legal proceedings. This should be the way nowadays.

“It's a Rental Water Softener - READ AGREEMENT CAREFULLY”

★★☆☆☆

written by VenkataVuppala on 09/10/2021

The Water Softener works like a Charm and I believe one relocation is free of cost. Absolutely no complaints on it. One of the Most important things which usually the Sales Agent never tells properly or doesn't put emphasis on is the fact, Its rental by default when you subscribe to it. Within 3 months of Purchase, if you don't call the company and assume its an EMI, they will charge around 40£ per month for rest of your life. I almost paid for 5 years, I would have got 2 of them at that price, if I have been little bit cautious. The Agreement clearly says about the rental plan, but again if we start reading all the clauses of any agreement, one life won't be sufficient. I just trusted the Sales Agent and I paid for it. Be cautious, Call them and make the complete payment within 3 months of the Trial.

“Avoid!!!!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by JuanKearns on 11/07/2021

Avoid this company. It has been more than a month and the water still hard… 3 packs of salt have gonna and the water it not softened “as promised”. Carried out the test on the first week, it was hard water, but as they say test again after 2-3 weeks… a month later I tested it with the package Harvey provided, the colour that appear is not even orange (for hard water) it is extremely red, meaning the water is even worst. There is a problem with payment as well, they promised 3 months trial, instead they have been taking money from my account every single month. I didn’t receive a call from customer service to know/ask how am I satisfied with the service!! Just taking money and that is it for them. Very unsatisfied with the service, as they promised so much for me and my family and are delivering nothing !!!!! I doubt how honest is the good reviewers written here.

“Pathetic after sale service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Lunam333 on 16/12/2020

Beware !! They are really good at marketing & take care of the customer very well until the installation & 3 months (trial period). Absolutely pathetic after-sale care. Mine broke down twice in 2 years & the waiting period was 2 months for each repair. They care a damn about the customers. Not worth the money you pay. Will never recommend Harvey's to anyone.

“Appalling customer care”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 16/12/2020

On 7 September 2020,the fitter drilled through an electric cable, causing a power cut in extremely cold weather. Our electrician attended to correct the problem on 2 separate occasions to carry out a full repair. When we submitted the photographic evidence of the damage, Harvey eventually agreed to cover the cost of the electrician's bills, but communication on this matter from the company was zero. Fortunately we had an excellent salesman, who sold us the softener in the first place and who was very supportive towards us. At the present time, many weeks later, we still await reimbursement. The softener sprang a leak after one month of being fitted and had we not been at home, our new kitchen floor would have been ruined by a flood of water. The same fitter returned to fit a new part to the machine and in so doing, he apologised for the electrical damage he had caused. We have received no apology whatsoever from the company. I am sorry to say we could never recommend Harvey Water, even though the product appears to be good.

a twin tank water softener is a better solution because the unit is functional at all times even when regenerating. A single tank softener stops providing soft water while it is regenerating. Nothing to do with the size of your hot water tank.

2 types of unit, large and small, we have the large one, supply and install including a filter tap was around £1200 ish but this was a few years ago. the payment can be done interest free credit which is a plus. A registered plumber comes, included all pipe work that needed to be done

We paid around £1800 that includes water softener and drinking water tap, plus loads of salt we purchased to store away. It sounds like a lot, but it's really worth it. Paying monthly 0% interest, only a few more months to go then no more payments and we can continue enjoying the benefits for life.

I have used water softeners for decades. You should always have a separate (swan-neck) fresh water supply tap. Water softeners are efficient, especially Harveys, but the advice against drinking softened water is to avoid the risk of traces of salt in the water.

Yes. Since I presume the water system for the under floor heating is closed it is not being replenished *except for small wastage) it is not passing through the softener and will not therefore be using any salt once loaded.

If the water preassure in your shower is caused by limescale clogging the passages, then water preassure will greately improve (this was my case), however, it will not improve imediately as it takes a few weeks before the softened water can clear the limescale in the pipes and shower head.
Report this content rkevinbrown Written on: 04/08/2016
Not directly. But if your pipe work is scaled badly and thus reducing pressure, water softener will slowly remove scale snd therebye (possibly) improving pressure to shower. A visit by a reputable plumber will be able to tell you whether it will work for you.

First of all does it normally make any noise?, ours in normal use is almost imperceptively quiet, other than the "ticking" that the metering unit makes as water is used. (you really have to listen closely to hear it!). However what can be heard albeit not very loud, is the regeneration process. This of course will only occur once a predetermined voloume of water has been used and measued by the metering unit and of course if you have been away it shouldn't have registered any. In other words the unit should have done nothing while you were away and simply carried on measuring your water usage on your return. It occurs to me that if you have let it run out of salt and if this has happened for some time, the metering unit may have been measuring unsoftened water and become "clogged". As I understand it, if you leave the unit to run without salt, it will not regenerate and therefore ultimately fail due to scaling up within it. If you suspect this, you probably need to contact Harveys. Good luck.

You describe it as a grit like substance, could it in fact be some of the resin which is used for the softening process. If so, I don't know why it would be getting past the internal screen that should stop this happening. As for yellow stained water, I've no idea other than, have you been running it at all and forgetting to replenish the salt, as if so this may cause the unit to ultimately fail. I suggest you contact Harvey's.

It would be worth strongly complaining to Harvey's. You bought this in good faith and now it's not working. They should undertake the repair for nothing or replace it. The more fuss you make the better your chances of a free repair - they can't afford bad publicity!

I have had mine for 3 years with no problem, and it has been moved, however, my plumber had to speak to Harveys to plumb it in correctly as he knew nothing about the way a Harvey softener works, have you arranged for Harveys come to take a look and give the quote? I can't imagine what could go wrong so long as you keep the salt replaced when it needs it, I agree that Harveys should repair it, they have always given me the very best service when I had questions about the move.

You certainly have claim under Sale of Goods Act. Softeners can reasonably be expected to last lot longer than 18 months - 10 years at minimum - I would say 20 is not unreasonable especially as their advertisements infer such!. As Mos2015 said, you are entitled to replacement or free repair. Do not accept less - take action via small claims if not resolved.

what is "not working"? You say something so simple, but what is it? Had ours 3 years, moved house and ours still working perfectly. No mechanical parts so either something was disturbed in the pipes or dislodged. Using recommended salt, or recently changed to cheaper version maybe? Is it not softening the water? after 18 months I imagine you should still have your test kit. DO a test and if not getting what you should get then phone Harveys. I am sure they would fix. Have they given you this quote or is it just a guess? If it is simple they may even fix over the phone for you. You just never know, you could strongly complain only to find it is just user error, although I could not think what since there is nothing to do but replace salt :) give them a call, give them a chance, I am sure you will find this will not get to complaint stage.

Mine is only 1 year old and no such problem. However, as 'amateur' plumber, if your experience is caused by water softener it's serious. Leak from softener into mains is very serious. Get service from Harvey or reputable local plumber.
Report this content Kwells Written on: 04/12/2015
I have no idea, the drinking water should be direct from the mains and nothing to do with the softener, I would get Harveys back out to check your plumbing, to ensure the drinking tap is not connected to your softener instead of the mains.
Report this content Peco41 Written on: 05/12/2015
This should not happen. Get in touch with Harvey and have them check it out. It's quite possible that your water supply quality has altered. You can find out if this is so by going on line to your water supply company who will have a list of minerals etc in the water. If the salt or sodium ion level is higher than normal this could be a likely cause.
Report this content J-CP Written on: 09/12/2015
Need to clarify, the softener is installed at the entry of your mains water feed so not sure how one tap can be left untreated (apart from outside taps), unless you had the water fountain fitted at your sink which is through a separate filter? If it is the fountain then I would start with replacing the filter first. You do not get taste of salt anyway as no salt from the softener enters your water in reality. Unless there is a serious fault with it which is very unlikely since as you say this tap is not treated. You may still have the test kit from original install? Test the water, but it could well come from the water supply itself. May be worth checking with your neighbour too if they have same issue. Do you get salt taste from your other taps i.e. those treated?

Yes, it will eventually remove scale from pipes etc; scale from around taps (see manfacturers claims) in my case disappeared in about one month. Most water softeners are about the same size and fit in the under sink cupboard, or in some cases outside in a frost proof cupboard. The larger the household, the more salt you use because you use more water, but you should not need a larger unit.
Report this content Kwells Written on: 02/11/2015
My plumber told me that my water tank is almost sparkling it is so clean, so yes, after nearly 30 years of hard water, it is scale free. I don't know how long it took, but that was about 1 year after installation. I think the units are all about the same size, mine is in the cupboard under the sink, I am in a 3 bedroom semi and mine works fine. Get someone to come and give you a demonstration, it is free and they don't give you a hard sell.
Report this content J-CP Written on: 03/11/2015
Yes over time the scale in pipes will go. The softener is installed at the entry point of your fresh water supply so size of the unit is irrelevant whether you have a 2,3 or 5 bedroom house, the water gets softened as soon as it enters the property. What does need considering is the usage of water: the more water you use the more salt you will use that's all. 2 blocks of salt last roughly a full month. The size of the unit fits under the sink (if you have room) and is about the size of a Tower desktop computer. Remember the outdoor tap is not connected to the softener, so you do not have to worry about wasting salt when watering the garden or washing your car.

The cost of a Harvey Water Softener is just over £1000. The cost of fitting can be over £200. Their site visit is free and will give you a quotation. When comparing Harvey with others, remember you are getting softened water which is drinkable: many others advise you use unsoftened water for drinking. Hope this helps.

The total cost was around £1400. You have the option of renting for the first three months and then they take it away if you do not want it. That was £99 per month. But well worth it. Also negotiated the amount of free salt given.
Report this content J-CP Written on: 28/10/2015
If I recall 2 years ago we bought ours and the total cost with fitting and some salt was near the £1700. However this also included the fitting of the additional water fountain (an extra tap with "filtered" water for drinking). Not compulsory of course but we liked it so got it as well. Rent or buy, either way it is well worth it. Would not do without a water softener now.

Our Harveys W/S was close on £1,600 all-in. Not cheap but a very worthwhile investment. One of the nice things for us was that the unit was able to be installed outside (i.e. not in the kitchen where it would take up valuable space); also, the unit uses big salt blocks - much easier to replenish than fiddling with salttabs. Noting the comment below about softened water being drinkable - yes, that's probably OK but Harveys do install a separate swan-neck fresh water dispenser-tap; again, that was included in the price. Very efficient company....

Hello, Before buying my softener I visited the factory at Woking and was lucky enough to meet Harvey himself. I can only say that he is a genuinely nice man. He is an acknowledged authority on water softeners and takes a genuine pride in the quality and reliability of the softeners that his company produces. Having had our softener for only 9 months, with absolutely no problems I can not say how good their after sales service is, however should anything go wrong I anticipate it being second to none. I know this all sounds like an advert but I can assure you I have no connection to the company other than being a satified customer. Good luck.

Hi. I have just opted to buy my water softener after the trial period. I have chosen he interest free option of buying over a year with 12 installments. Overall this is a better option than renting ad infinitum. The product seldom goes wrong and the company has such a strong moral ethic, I believe they would resolve any problems once the guarantee period has expired. I am really pleased with my softener on many levels. No point in renting as that is ultimately 'dead money'.
Report this content Kwells Written on: 18/10/2015
We also worked out that the finances made more sense to buy outright. Never needed after care or warranty but I imagine if you ever needed it that they would be as superb as they were when they came out to demonstrate. They are all considerate and helpful and I always rate a business that refuses to comment on others who are in competition. I imagine your trial is already proving the value of the system.

On a long run you better off buying to be honest. The difference though is when you rent, if you move house they re-install it free for you (as we gladly found out when we moved last year). We rang them to let them know when we were moving and when could they install it back in the new house, they were there when they said they would be, no hassle. So on that basis I would say their after care is perfect. This softener has never broken down, I think we have had it over 2 years now and never regret getting it. As this was our last move we have now paid it off, all we now have to do is buy salt and put it in..... Job done :)

Hi there, after having one for over two years now, I have to say that washing the car has never been easier, in fact when watering the garden, I notice the marks that the non softened water is making!. I use the water in cooking and it is perfectly acceptable to drink, although not as cold as the mains. Harvey installed a mains drinking tap for me which I can use when I want particularly cold water. I suffer from psoriasis and I have to say it is improved, but I don't know if that is due to the water. I also use the water for cleaning the windows, no white limescale marks! Hello, Don't worry about the salt. Salt is only used during the regeneration process. The salt used to regenerate is fully flushed away before the cylinder being regenerated is connected back to the supply. This of course all happens automatically/periodically dependent on water usage. This means that you can of course use the softened water to clean your car and I'm sure it would produce a lovely streak free finish. However cleaning a car tends to use a lot of water and will therefore cause the softerner to regenerate sooner thus using even more salt and water, in the regeneration. In my experience the Harvey softener is very economical on salt and regeneration water usage. Therefore it's down to a personal choice. As regards all your other points, if you visit the Harvey's website they have very comprehensive list of FAQ's that should cover all of your questions. There are several schools of thought regarding drinking softened water and there again after a lot of Googling I'm sure you will be able to come up with your own informed decision. Finally I think you would be very pleased with the Harvey softener, I certainly am. I have no connection with the company, I am merely a customer of several months standing. I reviewed my experiences a few months ago on this site. My machine is the Homewater 300 built by Harveys. Good luck.

Washing the car: same as before since your outside tap "should not" be connected to the softener, only your inside taps, otherwise you would use a lot of salt just to wash your car and water your garden. There is always the possibility to use a watering can with water from your kitchen tap for a last rinse though. Home brew: I make elderflower sparkling wine, no issues there. Health questions: not qualified to answer however look it up or Harvey would definitely be able to advise. All I can say is I used to suffer from very slight problem like skin peeling off since moved down south east of England, softener cleared that completely. Drinking water: No issue whatsoever, and you will see no scale at the bottom of your kettle anymore. But if you drink a lot of just cold water, I would recommend the filtered water fountain Harvey can install for you, it is a pure matter of taste. Again something Harvey do demonstrate when they come round. As someone else already said, Harvey, good company, no hard sale, no pushing. We've had ours now 3.5 years and could not imagine taking it out. Hope this helps.

I have not experienced or heard of this. If you think it is the softener causing it, your best bet is to contact the manufacturer in the first instance and ask them. Good luck.
Report this content Flaco Written on: 27/04/2015
That sounds like traces of copper sulphate to me, which would be attributed to copper pipework and/or h/w storage tank oxidising. You would normally expect to see that on the outside of copper pipework rather than the internals, and it is not particularly harmful. Bear in mind that the softened water will now also start performing the task of gradually cleaning your internal pipework to a degree so I feel you would eventually start to see the blue deposits reducing and then stop altogether. However, I would contact Harveys aftersale service to check on this to be on the safe side. I have plastic pipework in my house, and rather than blue deposits I get dark grey or black deposits forming in the toilet pans. Brushes away easily, though. One thing I no longer have is chronic limescale!

Report this content geoffg1947 Written on: 27/04/2015
In their literature, Harveys mention that this can happen in a few cases, and is due to poor quality pipework. They say it is not a serious problem, and the marks can easily be removed with a "proprietary cleaner", In my opinion it has nothing to do with the water softener unit, it is blue/green copper ions leaching from your pipes.

The Twin Tec S3 is indeed made by Harveys. I think you will find that most "water-powered" twin tank softeners in the UK are either Harvey's or branded models made by Harvey's. The other main manufactuer of this type being Kinetico, however I don't believe they are able to measure water usage to the accuracy of the Harvey softeners, which is an important factor in relation to water and salt consumption. With a bit of "Googling" you can soon spot softeners from the Harvey family. I am still extremely pleased with my Homewater 300 (another variant). It uses very little salt or water in it's infrequent regeneration cycles. Good luck.

There are no mechanical parts so no servicing required and I know some who have had their softener for more than that. It is only plastic and pipes so I only suspect maybe a pipe that has been disturbed or maybe damage slightly depending where it is situated. I'd have a good look first and inspect all the pipes. When I moved house recently I de-installed my Harvey softener myself, there is absolutely nothing to it, just pipes and a big container with salt blocks. Have a good look make sure nothing damaged/cut or split. DO TURN THE WATER MAINS OFF FIRSt though for peace of mind. If nothing obvious then contact Harvey, they are absolutely brilliant.

Whichever "drain" pipe (one is the actual drain pipe and one is the brine tank overflow) is dribbling water. It's probably a leaky internal valve and if so not something you can deal with yourself. It does sound like you need to contact Harvey's. They are very helpful. Good luck. Bargainbob
Report this content kindbear Written on: 26/02/2015
There should not be a constant dribble from the drain of your water softener. Chances are that one of the valves is partially stuck and needs cleaning or replacement. This will not get better on it's own and is only likely to get worse. Contact Harveys for service, they are very helpful. You need a specialist like Harveys, not a general plumber.

My softener keeps making a high pitched whining sound every 2 weeks or so. I have managed to stop it by turning the inlet blue valve a quarter turn anti-clockwise. I am worried that should I not be here when it does it I will have a burst pipe. Can you help please? I have had the softener for about 14 years. Many Thanks

To be honest my softener does make some noise every so often that is why it's in my garage. As for your noise I have to be honest and feel it would be ok but I would say give Harvey's a call and ask there customer services for some advice/reassurance.
Report this content Bargain_Bob Written on: 18/02/2015
I have only had my Harvey softener for a short time. They are extremely quiet in normal operation, as you will already know. I'm guessing that you don't use much water and the noise you're hearing is during regeneration (every 2 weeks perhaps?). However a "high pitched whirring" doesn't sound normal. I wonder if it cold be that your mains water pressure to the house has recently increased? Have you remembered to keep it topped up with salt? The water meter/valve in these machines use the softened water to power itself. Therefore if you let the salt run out the meter/valve may be running on unsoftened water. Whatever it is I should give Harvey's a call, they are very helpful.
Report this content J-CP Written on: 19/02/2015
Best to get Harvey to have it checked really, but to be regular i.e. circa every 2 weeks I would concur with what has been said already, it has to be when your softener regenerates, this is the only scheduled task the softener does. Since there are only pipes involved (no mechanical moving parts), maybe just switch your water mains off and check all the pipes for slight obstruction or kink ? Never know, could be very simple explanation.
Report this content nickbestwick Written on: 27/02/2015
I agree with the previous answer, mine does make limited noise at times, but not enough to be concerned about. I know when I had mine fitted, I had to have a pressure reducer valve, and this was to take my pressure below 5bar (I think) Just a thought...
Report this content Kwells Written on: 02/05/2015
I would guess that is the recycling , every now and again, it opens the valve and brings more water into the container for softening so that you have a constant flow, could that be it?

I have just moved to a new house that had a Harvey's water softener already installed. I suffer with dry skin and eczema, so the softened water really helps and my skin has really improved. But there seems to be a down side, my hair has become extremely dry and I have to use an awful lot of conditioner. My hair is fair and highlighted and it seems the salt in the water is turning my hair green. What should I do? Help.

I would contact Harvey anyway to check the softener works as it should since you moved in a house that already had it installed. There should be a test kit (if previous owner not already used it) to test the water. But since you mention it helped your skin then it must be working fine (easy to see also if water does not leave white marks on your sink or around the taps when it dries out, then it's fine). My wife has highlighted hair and she has never mentioned such side effect. However we buy salt from a supplier recommended by Harvey. It could be the salt left by previous owner is cheaper or of lower quality and has a reaction with the hair product you use? Either that or the usual cause for green/blue hair tint is presence of copper particles in the water. An electrician could also check that due to work carried out in the house in the past, they may have removed a grounding clamp from one of the pipes somewhere in the house. Harvey I am sure would be able to advise accordingly if they have come across this issue in the past experience.
Report this content kindbear Written on: 05/01/2015
The water softener does not put salt into the water, the salt is only used for regeneration. The softener works by exchanging the calcium ions which causes hard water to sodium ions. When the resin has absorbed its share of calcium ions, the resin is regenerated by flushing with a brine solution, hence the salt. The process can then repeat all over again. It is a common misconception that the water softener adds salt to the water, it doesn't. Soft water has a much greater detergent effect than hard water, hence the need for much less soap. Because the detergent effect is greater it is likely that it is washing out more of your conditioner than hard water would. Perhaps try changing your conditioner for one that doesn't wash out so readily. Maybe, your hair going green is a reaction between your conditioner and the extra sodium ions in the soft water. I hope this is of some help.

I agree, I would get Harveys to come and have a look, I have my hair coloured and have no problems, my hair is soft and the colour is not affected.. If the water tastes salty then there is something wrong with the installation. We drink ours ..
Report this content Kwells Written on: 02/05/2015
In my experience there is no salt in the water, as we drink ours.. I would ask Harveys to test the water for you if you don't have the test kit that they provide. It might be worth asking them.

Report this content kindbear Written on: 11/11/2014
I doubt it would be suitable as they are only designed for single domestic premises. The water pressure would be lowered if several flats are using water at once. Also, because a larger than normal amount of water would be used, the unit would spend a lot of time in regeneration, further lowering the pressure. It would get through much more salt and need to be replaced more often. Who would be responsible for refilling the salt and ordering supplies? I would phone Harveys to get a definitive answer though.

I have absolutely no idea, just call Harvey's and ask them!! They are so helpful. You will have a visit from a sales person, remember that their quote has no hidden extras and the installation cost is set so that it doesn't matter how long it takes, it will be the same cost. They are straight and up front and once installed the only cost is the salt, as it is not electric and works on your water usage alone.
Report this content harveyjo Written on: 05/11/2014
Around about £1200. However this can be tested witha 3 month trial at £30+ pcm. If you choose to buy then the money paid during the trial is deducted from the amount outstanding on a purchase and then it's a monthly payment of approx £118 for 12 months. Harveys really do let you 'Try before you buy' which is a good deal
Report this content kindbear Written on: 05/11/2014
The price Harveys quote is the price you will pay, no hidden extras. It cost me about £1250 for everything, including VAT. I would suggest that you let Harveys install the machine for you as general plumbers often don't really understand water softeners. Harveys have all the correct parts such as valves pipes and hoses. General plumbers may use pipes and valves that are too small which can spoil the performance of the softener. Also, the softener needs to be programmed to the water hardness in your area which most plumbers can't do. I can't recommend Harveys highly enough, great family firm, no hard sell and a superb product that works perfectly.
Report this content nickbestwick Written on: 06/11/2014
I have idea either, as per earlier answers, call them and ask. I personally have found them to be honest, open and there we no hidden charges or costs. So what they quote, is what you pay. The salesman was not pushy or giving me the hard sell. They just presented the facts to me!

The test kit it purely to demonstrate the change in water softness before and after the softener has been installed. The softener itself used salt as needed, and is not an adjustable thing. If you live in a 'harder' water area than a 'softer' one, then it will use more salt. Hope that helps.
Report this content robertsnhdft Written on: 15/08/2014
Hello, The kit is only intended to establish whether you have softened water or not after installation, there is no adjustment to be made or available to the Harvey Softener.
Report this content J-CP Written on: 15/08/2014
The test kit is only to be used should you suspect your softener is not working. If the test proves your unit works successfully, then there is nothing else for you to do, you cannot adjust the amount of salt the unit uses, it is cleverly designed to do that for you.
Report this content Kwells Written on: 15/08/2014
Hi. The unit adjusts itself according to the hardness of your water, no need to worry. It will take a month or so before your tank and everything is softened. Just relax and enjoy.
Report this content kindbear Written on: 15/08/2014
The softener is pre-adjusted for the water hardness of the area in which you live. There is no adjustment to be made. The test kit is simply to check that the softener is working correctly.
Report this content kazza100 Written on: 15/08/2014
You can't adjust the softner - it'll use the salt it needs. The kit is there for you to test the water if you need to - if you think it's not working for example.
Report this content Adeinengland Written on: 15/08/2014
OK I am not an expert but was a scientist and understand ion exchange which is at the heart of your water softener. The water softener ion exchange resin extracts calcium from your water and replaces it with sodium ions. It will keep doing this until all the exchanger is saturated with calcium whereupon it is flushed with concentrated salt solution (from the blocks) to knock the calcium off (into the drain) and replace it once again with sodium ions. The water testing kit just tells you if the softener is working as it should. If you live in a very hard water area the softener will regenerate more often (and visa versa) so it adjusts itself. If you forget to replace the blocks of salt then it will stop working and the test kit will tell you that. If there is a blockage in the regenration system or that is not working then ditto. You should be able to tell it is not working without the kit- the water will feel hard, take more soap to suds etc, and that wonderful silky feeling in the bath will be absent (plus you will get a bathtub ring again when you empty the bath.) Hope that helps

Hi As answered in other posts the salt water ratio cannot be changed by you,If you give Harvey softeners a call and book one of their service people to look at your problem then they can set the softener to use more salt if that is what is required. If you had booked an appointment for a demo at home the water would have been tested and depending how hard your water is he would have advised the type of softener required. A visit costs around £65 Hope this helps.
Report this content dach.gin Written on: 16/08/2014
There's no adjustment needed. The kit is provided so that you can verify that the softener has kicked in or that it has stopped working for whatever teason. In other words, you can't control how soft the water should be.

As for having a water softener, it's life changing (once you get used to the taste of the tap water). Everyone reports softer hair, and there is none of that nasty scale build up we always used to get. I bore all my friends to death recommending it :-)

No, water softeners don't require routine or annual maintenance. All you need to do is replace the salt blocks as they run out, about once a month. High quality softeners like Harveys are very reliable and should work for years without any problem. Cheapo softeners can be a right pain and go wrong frequently, steer clear. Not sure about other softners, but the Harvey water softner does not need any maintenance. The only one thing to do is replace salt blocks when it needs and absolutly nothing else. If you have the filtered water fountain installed as well, they send you a new filter once a year. Unscrew old one, screw new one in, as simple as changing a light bulb.

Report this content kindbear Written on: 20/06/2014
Salt blocks are used in pairs. How long they last depends on how much water you use and how hard your water is. My wife and I (No kids) probably use an average amount of water and our water is very hard. We get through a pair of salt blocks every month. A pair of salt blocks cost just under £6 from Harveys. So running costs are about £6 per month. You might be able to buy salt blocks slightly cheaper elsewhere but I prefer to have the guarantee that the salt is pure. Salt which has impurities could damage the softener's resin over time and would be a costly mistake.

Depends how much water you use. You replace salt blocks in pairs (they come in packs of 2), they usually melt evenly. We live in a very hard water area. Daily shower or bath, washer, dish washer, make loads of brews for anyone who comes round, the two blocks will last the month. You can buy them from Harvey's, or from a supplier they will recommend. The more packs you buy in one go the cheaper it is but it's on average between £3.70 to £4.00 + VAT per pack of 2 (so that's what it will cost you per month to run).
Report this content pondclose Written on: 21/06/2014
It depends on how much water your family are using. there are two in our household and we use a pair of salt blocks about every four weeks. If you buy small amounts they will cost around £5 (Two blocks) I buy 10 at a time so the price drops to £42 You have to shop around. Hope this helps,

We pay around £4 for 8kg block salt (2 X 4 kg blocks) We are only two people in the house and two blocks last about 2 months- perhaps a little more. Obviously the bigger your water bill is the faster you are going to consume salt. So we pay about £12 per month for metered water supply
Report this content Kwells Written on: 21/06/2014
As the softener is non electric, and it works on the amount of water you use, so the amount of salt you use depends on that.. you use 2 blocks at once, so there is a constant supply of soft water, There are 2 of us here we changed the salt at the beginning of March and it is just over half way through, but we were away for a couple of weeks, when of course there was none used. They always both run out at the same time, so you can only buy it in packs of 2. You can get salt from lots of places but it is extremely heavy so watch out for delivery charges, salt that may seem cheap often ends up more expensive. From Harveys 6 packs of 2 blocks of salt is about £40 an d the more you buy the cheaper is gets. That includes postage packing and VAT their delivery service is also spot on.. and have not yet found cheaper salt... at least where I live. I am glad I chose this one, it is fuss free and delivers water good enough to drink.

you should have a sticker on the front with details. If not, email or call them. The sticker should also include the device serial number. It will sound from time to time as if it runs water (I think it is every time 500 litres have gone through the system) but this is the regular internal cleaning process, but only lasts a few minutes though. If yours is constant then there must be a fault, a blockage of some sort, make sure no pipe has been caught and disconnected, but this is the limit of my knowledge on them...... I'd consult them. Silly question, although it should not affect it in that manner, you haven't run out of salt have you, or have a tap running constantly somewhere, even outside (although outside tap should not be going through the softener). Just thoughts.

Harveys do a one off cost that covers everything, no matter how long or complicated the installation. I found that their price was comparatively better than going to a water softener company and finding a plumber. I recommend that you get them to send a rep to you who will explain everything. I chose them because they all seemed to be so honest and of course the softener needs no maintenance - watch out for others who will quote an annual maintenance fee!!

I am incredibly pleased with my Harvey water softener, it is a massive improvement on my old Culligan. Harveys really have thought of everything. It's very small and just works perfectly. They offer a three month 'trial' at relatively low cost, and they will then take it away of you do not want to keep it 4. They also offer 6 month interest free (in fact I asked if I could have 12 months and they agreed without any angst) 5. The only running cost is salt: we use 2 blocks about every 6 weeks. 6. The process starts with a survey / sales pitch, which we found to be quite low key, with no pressure selling. 7. We live in a very hard water area and the system has worked well: we are pleased!

Hi DC, the quote I had last June before I went ahead in Oct is as follows: - Softener unit: £1070 Installation: £250 (no cost difference between internal vs external fitting). Separate drinking water filter £130 (this is optional, for filtered mains water rather than drinking the softened water directly) VAT: £290 Total cost: £1740 I currently pay £44 per month to cover all of that, but am now going to purchase outright and they will deduct a maximum of 3 x monthly rentals (£132) from the cost of £1740. You don't have to purchase it outright, you can just carry on paying the monthly fee indefinitely if you like. Alternatively, you can just purchase it outright from the start if you like, but I thought I would try it for 3 months first. If you decide, within the initial 3 month period, that you don't want it anymore they will refund your money in full. You get a free salt pack to start with, and the highest price I pay from a recommended supplier for more is £32 (6 packs x 2 4kg blocks). I have very hard water here and estimate I am getting through 1 pack every 4-5 weeks. The annual replacement cost for the carbon granule drinking water filter I opted for is £52. Let me know if you need more info.

I paid approx £1700 as I had a drinking tap and filter fitted….then there is the cost of the salt to be added and then if you have a drinking tap fitted you need a filter every year….we have found it really good and noticed a difference after a month with the scale disappearing….we could easily see this from our steamer. it can be expensive but this is the best water softener we have had and wouldn't be without it now. Hope this answers your question

The cost was included in the purchase price. No installation cost. Hope this helps

Jusr bought 6 weeks ago, £1740, all in (incl vat, fitting, filter and tap for drinking water, spare salt). Got demo, extremely friendly and as said by others, no pushing at all. Given option to buy right out, or first 3 month on rental (£47/month). If dont like it, return it and money back. Keep it after 3 months, 3 x £47 deducted from oustanding balance. It does not get any better than this. Be re-assured, it is not going back, we are keeping it. Personal choice and taste but the added filtered tap makes a lot of difference when just drinking cold water. Again this demonstrated at the demo. As for the rest, shower, sink, kettle, no marks, no need to descale anymore, what a difference it makes. To us it was so simple; got demo, ordered on the day, appointment to fit, fitted on the date they said. Just add salt. No maintenance, just sits there and works. As for service, Harvey's set the standards. Not had such quality service for a long time. Overall rating from me is 100%, would not waste time to go out and compare.

Allow at least £1250 for supply and fit. They do 12months interest free and a 3 month trial which is worth having.

I agree with Kwells answer, the guy how fitted my water softner went to extreme measures to fit my softner, I don't think you will find a better company than harveys, i don't actually use their blocks, but the ones i buy are ok. I paid a total of £1600, worth every penny, just give them a call see the demo and you will want to have one installed, they don't do a sell on you they let you try it for 3 months first so that you can see if it's what you want. If you do buy one please mention my name, i will get some free salt blocks for refering people to the company, and you could refer too when you get yours.

Very happy with my water softener which is in an insulated box outside so does not take up cupborad space. Harvey's is top of the market so expect to pay around £1,500.

Had mine fitted two months ago quoted price £1584 all inclusive which meant an extra small tap for hard water if needed fitted to sink, option of my outside tap being hard or soft, (chose soft for washing the car), had two quotes from plumbers for Kinetico slightly cheaper but electric, didn't deal in Harveys, excellent presentation, fits neatly under sink unit, all done in about four hours, chose the three month trial option, had soft water almost immediately through the cold tap, took some time for it to work through the hot water system, although i do live alone so not unusual, will very likely purchase after the trial period.
