“I have had my grey pulsar (K-reg) for over two years...”

★★★★☆

written by pulsar moley on 24/10/2008

I have had my grey pulsar (K-reg) for over two years now and covered about 25000 miles. The only problem i had was the clutch go at about 80000 miles and the car has done another 20000 since. Yes if a had put it into a garage it would have been expensive but me and my brother changed it in our garage so labour costs werent an issue. I put an uprated one in only because i am thinking of increasing engine output otherwise i would have stuck with standard. Apart from the clutch i have only changed the slave cylinder which on a car of this age doesnt suprise me and was only about £40. I enjoy this car as even though it only has a few mods, and is quick (for me) i find has a good economy giving on average 25mpg running at around 270bhp. On a run to cornwall with the car fully loaded I got a suprising 34mpg, but admittedly when driven really hard have seen the figures down to 16 mpg. As with any car some people end up with one thats been thrashed and not looked after which sways their opinion on them. I am currently looking to buy another with even more horsepower as i like them. It does have bad points like it understeers but with a good right foot can be corrected, I dont think there is a car that will tick all the right boxes it is just down to taste. The intercooler is a problem when sitting in traffic but it soon cools back down again. I dont have tracking problems with mine and the tyres have not worn abnormally apart from the outer edges on the fronts from hard cornering. I change the oil in mine every 3000 miles since purchased and I dont use expensive oils just some semi-synthetic 10w40 at about £18 for a 5litre jug. It still runs as well as the day I bought it and im very pleased with its reliability.

Extremely fast. Very tunable. Practical. Lots of fun, very reliable if serviced with good oil. Best car I have owned, beats everything with 4 wheels of the lights.still an incredibly fast hot hatch after 17 years even if it is just a Nissan Sunny.

written by on 02/09/2008

Over all the Nissan Pulsar Gtir I think is a great little road car, when the car is set up just a little over the factory spec (strut brace, boost exh, intake and semi slicks, clutch, breaks) every thing is still strong enough to handle the xtra power, and handles well as well. Great little track car on week ends drive there and home again also good on fuel for the power. This is not your standard comuter vehical in a class of its own.

I would advice anyone to buy one! They are really fun to drive with all the reliability of any jap car! Just a simple upgrade of a boost controller from standard will see 300bhp! Very cost effective power! I wouldn't sell mine for the world!

And ask for scooby's and evo's yes they are super cars, yes you can get great power out of them, but they are the new xr2i come saxo, everyone has one they are common as muck.

Going from a tx3 laser turbo I was a bit nervous getting in to the Pulsar. i have the gtir sr20 turbo in a four door sss body converted to a 2 wheel drive. probably 10% quicker then the four wheel drive (hard to hang on to at high boost) only paid 8 grand for it and definitely worth the money only 120 thousand on the clock . fully lowered to hug the road running 12 pound boost and can easily handle more but the price of fuel at the moment kinda wears a hole in my pocket . over all very happy with the car.

“I really would not consider buying a Nissan Pulsar...”

★★★★☆

written by jazza2007 on 26/08/2007

I really would not consider buying a Nissan Pulsar unless you understand cars or know someone who does. These cars are old, they were largely not for UK anyway (only 53 actually marketed here) and keeping them on the road will be a pain if you are not a mechanic or don't have backup from one capable of dealing with a relatively rare car. On the plus side people are always crashing them so anything from the bonnet back is usually available from online forums at less expense than you probably think. You just need someone capable of fitting it.

Sorry - sounds like I am on a downer, which I am as I have largely fallen foul of the above. ABOVE ALL: These really are fun cars if you can put in the attention span to own one properly. So please do take what I have said here as a minor caution only.

“Takes very well to mods, the engines are very strong,...”

★★★★★

written by gtir top on 21/07/2007

Takes very well to mods, the engines are very strong, as well as the the 4 wheel drive system. Just the boxes are known to go but like I said above mines been fine and my mate has 380 bhp for 5 years and still on the same box, the standard intercooler if sat in traffic for 5 mins will get hot and sap power but soon cools, and you can get front mounted versions for £200 now, the brakes are bad, but fitting good pads helps improve them, also there are many uprated kits available for these cars. My favorite thing about this car, apart from a buzz whenever I drive it, is beating BMW M3's, Porsches, Subaru's, Mitsubishi Evos, Astons etc. off the lights.

“I wanted to buy a Cosworth when I saw a Nissan Pulsar...”

★★★★★

written by azboy25 on 18/08/2005

I wanted to buy a Cosworth when I saw a Nissan Pulsar for sale I knew they were fast so I took it for a spin, and really liked it I didnt buy that one but I got one within a week. It's just standard at the moment, but it's fast and so much fun to drive. I've driven lots of cars and this puts a smile on my face every time. The engine is brill it revs so freely, unusual for a turbo runs in to the red line and keeps on going with power. The turbo lag is very good more like a modern turbo car. The only thing I find with this car is its very hard to work on and I'm a mechanic and I find it a pain, but you can't have everything. I love the car and I will soon be running 1 bar boost not to much as I drive it evey day, that gives a good 280 bhp that's plenty in a car this size it will beat most even worth 10 times the value.

written by spliff1star on 15/05/2005

What can I say I have owned my Nissan Pulsar GTi R for a few months. Its had no probs so far. Runing 354bhp the speed restricter is still on and set to 118mph the car could easily see 160mph+ 0-60 is around 4.5secs. I only use the car as a weekend car. I payed £6,000 for my pulsar l reg with 35,000 miles full service one owner and with all engine mods by norris designs. I love this car.

“Ive owned my 1993 Nissan Pulsar GTI-R for 6 months...”

★★☆☆☆

written by mugahgah on 02/01/2004

Ive owned my 1993 Nissan Pulsar GTI-R for 6 months now. It has done 100,000KM and had been brilliantly looked after by the previous one owner.

When I took the car for a test drive 6 months ago, I loved the power, the lack of body roll around corners and the price ($10,000 NZD is usual).

After owning the car for a while, here is what i've learnt.

-traction in a straight line is GREAT because of the 4wd.

-The factory clutch burns out after just a few launches, and if you fit a stronger clutch you just put the gearbox under too much stress(it snaps gears) and the clutch pedal mounting bracket breaks.

-Alignment of the wheels is constantly going out of spec.

-Rear dif knocks between gears.

-Car understeers TERRIBLY. Apparantly this is due to very poor front/rear weight balance.

-top mounted intercooler heats up quickly on hot days ( under a black bonnet) and while driving around the city. On cold mornings and in the countryside it works fine.

I absolutely regret buying this car. It is supposed to be a high performance vehicle, however its no good in a straight line because of drive train strength, and its no good around corners because of its poor weight distribution.

I could spend money to fix the handling to a certain extent, but tyre wear will be excessive.

Im now looking for another car. I figure its better if i spend more to get something which does not need to be upgraded straight away.

If you MUST get a gti-r, make sure you take it for a decent test drive to see if the previous owner has sorted anything out.

Tobiboyce20Det's Response to mugahgah's Review

Written on: 04/04/2004

Hey! I am sorry you had that kind of experience with a Pulsar, I know of the bad weight balance and the intercooler mounted on the engine, which can cause over heating, also the weak gear box, but we must bear in mind that this car was developed in the late 80s and mainly as testing cars for WRC championships, though they had done a few rallies with good testing results, they were not taken through the modern testing and development we see today, where the engine of WRC homologations have the front mounted intercoolers and engine at a 30 degree angle towards the fire wall for better weight distribution. The GTI-R I was exposed to was prepared for rallying and had a few mods to it. Also every owner of a 1990-1994 nissan pulsar GTI-R has done something to it, mostly in the suspension and repositioning the intercooler. but they are a few people who would love to buy one of these beauties but the can not be imported to the usa.

Importmusclecar's Response to mugahgah's Review

Written on: 06/04/2010

I found this review not helpful because...I own a GTI-R myself and have found some of the information contained in this review not entirely true.
Firstly all cars have their share of positive points as well as bad points and while some of them come from factory others are introduced to the vehicle through poor modification and/or neglect.
While the GTI-R had it's share of potential problems from factory such as the inefficient top mounted intercooler , marginal braking capability , and a very average suspension setup we must bear in mind this car was designed in 1990 for the world rally championship and Nissan was obliged to build a number of production built road cars to qualify their entry. Some of these problems surfaced over the next few years and Nissan pulled out of rally before any further development could take place to remedy these problems.
So basically the GTI-R isn't a bad car at all, it's a car that has alot of potential with further development! Plenty of suspension and brake upgrades are available these days and alot of online support via GTI-R Clubs , online forums etc.
My advise is if your not prepared to get your hands dirty and do the GTI-R justice then don't buy one. They really are an enthusiasts type of car that needs a bit of attention every now and then and it's not always cheap! A good example can be a real pleasure to own and drive.

to MR GTR V-Spec:

Hi mate, yes Skylines are very, very good but you can't get away from the fact that they're big heavy cars (I've had 2, R33 GTS-T & R32 GT-R). I'm looking into getting a Pulsar just for the fun of it.

Your GTR may well have been 500hp but why does that mean that suddenly every other car is crap?

Wind your neck in a bit mate.

A 500hp Pulsar/Evo etc would be a lot faster than a std GTR, you can't compare tuned cars to std ones.

Gtir makes a good garden sculpture, it also, has plenty of room for your rac membership, has good cup holders for your tea while you wait for the rac to turn up, and if you do have to push it of your drive, it has a rear heated window to keep your hands dry in the winter.

A friend of mine tells me he gets about 15mpg on his impreza, I think this is ridiculous and have heard the pulsar is of a similar thirst? I take it you guys don't drive these vehicles very many miles per year? For the money though, I don't think there is anything at the moment that will beat an impreza or pulsar, second hand prices are soo low it is tempting. The EVO FQ 400 looks very nice, (0-100 in 9 dead!!!) Will easily beat an Enzo!. Evo's are rubbish!? I don't think so!

Lets face it lads, the pulsar is a top car, I have had one for nearly a year and I wouldnt change it for anything, they sound nice, they pull like mad...and the pulling keeps pulling, you gotta have the dump valve / blow off valve installed though... just to show off it is a turbo! Have had 148mph out of mine.... has any one had more out of a Pulsar?

There is no doubt that a pulsar-standard or modified is one of the fastest cars in terms of value for money. Subarus are now cheap so worth to look out for but neither are particularly good looking.
Has anyone considered a sierra cosworth for value for money? 500 brake is not too much probs. Or fun sexy looks and rwd also a rev 3 mr2 turbo?? or rx7? all these cars can be had for £6k.

maybe your GTO is ok in America, where roads can go on for hundreds of miles without seeing a corner. but here in Britain we have roads that are exciting to drive on. they have corners. they're called b roads. this is where our gti-rs, escort cossies, scoobys etc would obliterate your GTO thing, as they can actually go round a bend without slowing to 3mph.

why are you comparing a hatch back car to saloon cars any way i cant think of many hatch backs matching this type of proformance and price. arnt skylines etc just a little bit more expensive then pulsars and if you havent noticed they are both made by nissan. any way if you are talking about the nissan skyline sort of price there is a lot of cars which cost a simular price or cheaper (tvr cerbera comes to mind for some reason) which can go faster. any way my milk float has nitrus and will blow you all away so there :-).

Have you heard of Danny Fennel and his Pulsar, Bruce Spence and his Pulsar, did a quarter mile in just over 10 seconds, mate a R1 motrbike, do you know what that is? Does a quarter mile in 9-10 secs, the Pulsar has had a engine re-build 2.2, kickin out 660 bhp, gets to 60 in 2.8 sec flat, go and get a faster car mate!!! P.S. My uncle got into a rat race with a Skyline, heavily modified, he smoked him and then the guy in the Skyline came up to him and said, I'm parking my Skyline up!!!

I just brought a GTi-R, to me I have never driven a car that is so nice, it handles like a jem, this car is worth every penny. It is the best car in the world. I have driven VR 4s, Evo 5 and 3, and they are nothing compared to a GTi-R.
