Loved it. Was slightly put off seeing every Tom, Dick and Harry reading it on the train but now I can see why they were so engrossed!

Won't do a spoiler but would really recommend to anyone who likes thriller/crime type books.

I'm half way through the second one in the series now.

Lots of pompous reviewers trying to write like they are reviewing for The Times which is quite annoying - oh, and paraphrasing the main elements of the plot is not a useful mechanism for those wishing to help would-be readers. Suffice it to say that this didn't become the most spied book on the daily commute without a good reason. It's well written, with believable characters and an immersive plot. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

“I bought The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo after seeing...”

★★★★☆

written by reviewkitten on 24/12/2009

I bought The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo after seeing all the advertising in bookstores and was intrigued by the idea of a crime novel set in Sweden. Late author Stieg Larsson has crafted a well rounded female lead in Lisbeth Salander and pared with Mikael Blomkist investigating the story of a young girl who is presumed murdered you have the foundations of a solid story.

The careful unfolding of a crime that happened 30 years before is never sloppy and the characters are believable with well written backgrounds. This is a great story for all lovers of crime who are most likely like me, a little bored of the well trodden detective or ex-policeman themes in most crime novels.

“Sometimes a day in bed with the aftermath of migraine...”

★★★★★

written by Janet Lewison on 03/08/2009

Sometimes a day in bed with the aftermath of migraine can yield untold pleasure! This book had been recommended in the most positive terms and had sat by the side of my computer for several months whilst I was ( unbeknown to myself) awaiting a bad headache and the ironic oppportunity for a stretch of concentrated reading time. Although it is also a hard back version which perhaps put me off. How weighty it is with 533 pages! Yesterday I began and just kept going all afternoon and evening.

I know that Sweden has never been top of my list of desirable destinations though I remain a life long fan of Abba with their enticing mispronunciations and joyous hymns to love, but this book did convert me to ice and snow and places with gritty angular names even though it seemed unhealthily populated by misogynists and sexual sadists. My conversion depended initially upon the humane values of the narrative even when the characters didn't quite seem entirely rounded and perhaps their emotions were more told than shown. However the girl with the dragon tattoo made the novel work . Lisbeth Salander is awkward enough and odd enough to compel. Putting her next to the hero Mikael Blomkvist makes him suddenly more credible and provides the narrative with a velocity and direction that made several hundred pages just disappear. Her individuality provides the novel with resources unavailable to more mainstream characters and the novel is best when she is involved. You would always want her on your side when faced by any serial killer or billionaire fraudster.

I'm going to Tesco to buy the next novel in this trilogy- and this time I won't need a headache for an excuse !

“There have been some seriously mixed reviews about...”

★★★★☆

written by dhayes22 on 14/07/2009

There have been some seriously mixed reviews about this book, The Girl Who With The Dragon Tattoo, which seem to centre on what people are expecting from it when they by it. It's been tagged as a thinking person's crime novel and so I think a lot of people have bought it expecting it to be a serious piece of literature. While it is definitely one of the best crime books I have read, at the end of the day it's still a crime book and anyone who doesn't usually like the genre should probably steer clear.

It's exceptionally well written and very long for which me is a bonus - definitely value for money on the word-to-cost ratio. The author, who sadly died before seeing the success of his books, goes to great lengths to round out the characters with personal histories which makes it a rich read.

The tale is based in the murky world of big business in Sweden (yes there is big business there; think Volvo, SAAB, ABB, IKEA) and the personal dynamic between a disgraced investigative journalist, a asperger-suffering computer hacker and the patriarch of one of Sweden's richest families who is near death and wants to know what happened to his niece who disappeared nearly 30 years before.

There are a good 20 sub-plots within the novel but they all tie in in the end to the main story. Again some of the reviews of the book have complained that the book is long-winded but that for me is part of the joy of this book.

Definitely recommended as a good beach of plane read and with two more books in the trilogy the author wrote before he died there is plenty more joy to go.

“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo ”

★★★★★

written by Harriet Klausner on 26/07/2008

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Stieg Larsson
Knopf, Sep 2008, $24.95
ISBN: 9780307269751

In Sweden financier industrialist Hans-Erik Wennerstrom successfully sues Millennium magazine financial journalist Carl Mikael Blomkvist for libel and defamation of character. Mikael cannot believe he lost as he thought his proof was solid that Wennerstrom had used state funds intended for investments in Poland in an arms deal. The reporter refuses to appeal; he will serve his ninety days in gaol and pay the damages and court fees. He has no idea how the Minos Affair scandal as the media dubbed it turned so wrong.

Milton Security's top researcher tattooed Lisbeth Salander looks into the trust factor of Blomkvist for a client. She speculates that he was set up by someone in the Wennerstrom fiasco, but is honest to a fault. In Hedestad eighty something industrialist Henrik Vanger hires Blomkvist to learn what happened to his beloved great-niece Harriet who vanished decades ago. Henrik explains that when Harriet was twelve she baby-sat three year old Mikael, who did not remember that. The elderly man wants Mikael to uncover the truth of who killed the then sixteen year old Harriet in 1966; as she instead of her brother would have run Vanger Enterprises as she was the talented intelligent one of her generation. He agrees but the family does not truly cooperate so he gets nowhere until Lisbeth joins his investigation, which increasingly finds powerful men hating women of substance.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO is a superb Swedish thriller that grips the audience on two fronts. First is the libel case in which author Stieg Larsson vividly describes the government-industrial complex ripping off taxpayers to set up fake business ventures; the second is the investigation into the Vanger family. Readers will be fascinated with the business scandal, but enjoy the whodunit even more as that is fast-paced and exciting. The first Millennium Trilogy tale is a strong investigative thriller, a great homage to the talented author who past away a few years ago.
