Our IT firm recommended we moved our landline from Vodafone to Voipfone. I had been using Skype with a skype number for a couple of years but lately noticed the quality dropping and many voicecalls suffering from distortion and lagging. I've been a subscriber now to VOIPfone IP phone service for nearly a year - use it to access the UK phone network from overseas rather than paying crazy international call charges. Having used Voipfone for the past year I have had no complaints but within the last 2 weeks they have suffered 'technical issues' which has resulted in phones being cut off with little or no support. At approximately 8:30 am on the 27th February our monitoring system alerted us to an issue with one of the primary links between The Bunker, our data centre in Kent, and our data centre in London, Telehouse East.
 
Our automated failover kicked in and the traffic was re-routed via our back up link as designed. This link takes traffic via our Goswell Road, London data centre and is our secondary route used for just such occasions.
 
All of the above had no impact on customers and services were unaffected.

Later that morning our monitoring system detected an issue with some services in our primary data centre at Sovereign House in London due to unusual latency on the secondary inter-data centre link that had become active earlier. Although the issue was not big enough for our automated failover to kick in, in order to provide a high quality service to all our customers, our engineers decided that it would be safer to move some of the main services to our secondary data centre in Kent.

At 10.24 and just before our engineers finished making these changes, our back up link (which is from a third completely independent supplier using separate routing) also went down which resulted in our data centre in Kent going completely off line. At that point some of the main functions of our platform had become completely unavailable as they had been moved to the data centre that was now down. All we could do was rebuild the network so that wherever connectivity returned, we’d be ready for it. Connectivity was re-established just as our engineers were bringing the main functions (registrations and call routing) on line.

This final outage did not only affect us but also the thousands of other companies in the same data centre including many high-street shops, banks and financial institutions. The outage lasted from 10.25am to 12.09pm, 1 hour 44 minutes.
 
All our data centres and the connectivity to them is ISO 27000 certified and we have been told that the odds of what happened could be as low as a million to one.
 
We have invested a considerable amount of money in the best data centres in the UK, along with tier one connectivity and multiple backups and for us to lose all connectivity with multiple redundancy in place is hard to believe – and extremely disappointing.
 
Of course as a company we will learn from this and you can be assured that we are working with our data centres and providers and doing everything we can to ensure that this doesn’t happen again.

We run a small charity in Halifax called Yorkshire Children's Trust and we were looking for a cost effective way to a have a multi-line phone switchboard system without paying stupid prices. I discovered Voipfone on here and signed up with them a couple of weeks ago after a detailed website chat with Emlyn. I’m pleased that you found our support staff helpful and friendly, we invest a lot in our customer service and it’s great when it’s appreciated.

I’m obviously sorry that you didn’t actually go on to use the service; I think that if you had you may have worked out how to customise it to your needs without it costing very much at all.

Just to explain a little.

What makes our service unique is that we can cater just as easily for the larger business customer as we can for the very smallest - often sole traders and home workers. We do this by having a totally customisable set of products – the customer builds their own service using what we call the Package BuilderTM – this is a piece of technology that links to our Virtual PBX and allows customers to choose the things they need from a list of parts to create just what they need – and no more.

So a customer – say a start up business – can simply take a telephone number for £2 per month and nothing else. For many customers this is all they ever pay us.

After that if the customer hires an employee he adds an extension for £1pm. If he needs a call queue he adds that for £2 and so on. He can build his service up to 800 extensions and add call groups and IVR department (£2pm) as and when he likes and he can remove them anytime without penalty because we are a no contract service. It’s a menu driven service with the customer totally in charge.

At first this can seem fairly complicated because the virtual PBX offers a very sophisticated set of products but after a bit of trial and error - plus our support if required - it soon becomes clear what’s what. And it can all be done for a tiny fraction of the cost of a traditional PBX.

It’s rare, for this cafeteria style system to cost more than a pre-packaged bundle from one of our competitors but if it does, it’s almost always a mis-understanding of which components are actually necessary.

I need to correct the issue of “hefty surcharges.” The only ‘surcharges’ for telephone numbers are for the old London pre-fixes of 020 7 and 020 8 and for so called ‘vanity’ numbers like 0800 1001000.

This extra charge for 020 7 and 020 8 numbers is because those number ranges were closed by Ofcom in 2005. Only recycled ones are available now and they have become scarce and expensive.

Since April 2000, the London number range is actually 020, with 020 3 being the current range issued by Ofcom and there are no extra charges for these London numbers.

I hope that clarifies a few things. If at any time in the future you come back and have another attempt at using our service; we will, of course, be happy to guide you through the purchasing process so that you get only what you actually need.
