“best decision I ever made”

Written on: 23/05/2016 by Emerson346 (1 review written)

I used to be scared to answer the door or even hear the mail arriving as I was struggling to pay off my debts. Then I found out about stepchange.I plucked up the courage to call them convinced they would tell me how stupid I had been allowing the debts to get so out of hand but far from it they were fantastic. Before I called I hadn't even calculated the total amount I was owing on all my credit cards and loans and was shocked at the huge sum (nearly 89 thousand pounds)but the lady I spoke to… Read Full Review

“Your only regret will be not having contacted them sooner!”

Written on: 19/05/2016 by rbLamont153 (1 review written)

I contacted Stepchange in November 2012, having spend too many years in finacial ditress. I have been on a Debt management Plan (DMP) with Stepchange ever since and I can honestly say it has been one of the best financial decisions I have ever made. I am embarrassed to say that I am a qualified accountant (I should know better than to get myself into Debt right?), which contributed to a delay in me seeking help as I somehow felt obliged to manage the problem by myself. Anyway, I eventually… Read Full Review

Thank you for writing this, I am also taking AAT at present, I am concerned that any employer will see that I am on a Dmp, did you face any problems?

I wonder if I will have any money left after all of the expenses are put on, I need to be brave & do it though.
One of my credit cards is with the company I bank with & my husbands business account, I'm concerned they will withdraw our accounts.
How did you manage regarding a bank a/c?

Thank you again, it gives me hope x

“Now debt free !!!”

Written on: 08/05/2016 by MariahBroussard (1 review written)

About 8 years ago my husband and I were deeply in debt at around £64000. Bills were becoming harder to pay, even though we were both working, we were literally robbing Peter to pay Paul. In the end there was nothing left to borrow from, we were up to our limits on various credit cards, refused loans from various lenders. To say we had sleepless nights was an understatement. We couldn't discuss it with family as we feel too ashamed to admit to anyone we had allowed ourselves to get into such… Read Full Review

Can I ask how you managed getting approved for things like phone contracts or anything payable monthly? Swapping mortgage deal etc. Did you feel blacklisted?

Also, did anyone ever find out that you didn't want to know?

Wish I was you, sounds brilliant but we will get there soon x

Hi, we never had a problem with mobile phone or utilities. We haven't got a mortgage and haven't moved so that wasn't a problem. The budget Stepchange gives you allows you to "save" for emergencies which you have to make sure you put this amount to one side. The golden rule is never borrow any more money and only buy something if you need it. It's been a hard lesson learnt and we couldn't have done it without Stepchange help. We know our credit rating is poor but we will have to work at improving it but being debt free is a wonderful feeling. Good luck and never give up hope x

Written on: 07/05/2016 by qiHurley490 (1 review written)

Before we contacted step change we didn't know how we would ever pay off our debts. Once we spoke to them and arranged a repayment plan a big weight was lifted and the worry went and we could sleep again. Now we are debt free it is unbelievable. We paid off over £42,000 so don't think you will never clear your debts,we highly recommend getting in touch straight away… Read Full Review

“Took a great weight from my shoulders”

Written on: 04/05/2016 by RozT (1 review written)

Before summoning the courage to call them, I was struggling mentally and emotionally with spiralling into debt. From the first call, I was supported, empathised with and given a clear solution to my problems. I would recommend them to anyone with money worries. My debt is gone, I'm in a far far better place mentally and financially and can start afresh. 5 stars for a wonderful service… Read Full Review

“Changed my life!!”

Written on: 04/05/2016 by hofficoffi (1 review written)

I was so scared to ring StepChange initially, I don't know why, but I felt that after years of denial I had to face up to the fact that I was in trouble. I got into debt after a divorce when I had to start over again, then after being made redundant I got in the horrible payday loan cycle which I couldn't get out of. I was floundering, stressed, couldn't sleep/eat etc. As soon as I took that first step and phoned Stepchange it was like a massive weight was lifted off my shoulders! The staff… Read Full Review

I would just like to say a massive thank you to all members of staff for their understanding, kindness and support over more than ten years when they helped me with debts left by my ex-husband. If you are feeling like you are sinking call them they are not judgemental . They listen, they advise they guide. It is a huge weight off my shoulders that after all the hard work I am now debt free. “You have saved my life ”

Written on: 30/04/2016 by Naomi335 (1 review written)

I rang step change crying, not knowing what I was going to do. I was ignoring bills stuffing them in the bin; not even opening them, I had maxed out my credit card and my overdraft, and after rent and bills were paid I didn't have enough money for food. I was 23 and so naive to how credit and overdrafts work. Instead of asking family for help I had taken out a few payday loans. I was always too proud, I spent money on frivolous things and badly budgeted. I had to have the 'nicer' things in… Read Full Review

“Life Changing”

Written on: 30/04/2016 by Juniorw473 (1 review written)

I contacted StepChange at a very low point in my life. I was struggling to repay a bank loan and credit cards...entirely my own fault. My income changed and my lifestyle did not! I was stressed, weepy and unable to sleep...and ashamed. From my first contact with StepChange I felt as if a weight had been lifted and that there was a way forward. Every person I spoke to at StepChange was supportive and reassured me that having taken the steps to resolve my financial mess, I was on the right… Read Full Review

They don't answer their phones but you rack up more debt as your phone credit is eaten up on hold. They are very slooooooow to answer emails. When they do answer emails, they don't respond to queries or acknowledge details already sent. They just ask you to phone them then, guess what, they don't answer the phone. Round and round and round… Read Full Review

“Friendly helpful and understanding advisors”

Written on: 08/04/2016 by Michymoo2016 (2 reviews written)

Initially went to my local CAB and came out feeling awful like a failure and found the two advisors to be rude and judgmental. I rang stepchange and was advised to do a DRO as I didn't have any spare cash after essential bills. Over recent weeks I have spoken to a few different advisors who have all been informative professional helpful and understanding. I have been really pleased with the service I have received and can't thank Stepchange enough. My DRO has just been approved without any… Read Full Review

I started my DMP with StepChange in Jan 2014, with a debt of over £14,000 - racked with panic I started the process - and once I had completed the initial steps and received the plan I felt immediately at ease- helpful advisors, swift responses and overall a charity that is there to help you achieve your goal of a debt free life with extreme ease- always there to mediate with creditors, and always at the end of the phone if you have any questions or problems , would recommend to anyone who is… Read Full Review

“Not a good experience!”

Written on: 14/03/2016 by ml24 (1 review written)

I spoke to this company about a week ago and as a result received the budget I had constructed by post, but I was horrified when I read the reason which Stepchange had given for the debt, which was "lack of budgeting," which wasn't the case at all! It was due to my ex-husband walking out and leaving me with debts which he had accrued in my name, and I had told the advisor this at the time. To me, they seemed uncaring, and the statement was inaccurate. Also the amount for food, toiletries… Read Full Review

Hello.
They offered me a 'token' scheme which pays £1 per creditor. I thought they budgeted what is affordable to pay the creditors back not go off what you pay at the moment. I'm in 2 minds whether to go head or not. Did your creditors freeze interest? I have 3 credit card companies and not sure if I should contact them or not as I don't want to be penalised for it.

Hi Mary,
I'm not sure why they offered you a token payment, unless you don't have enough money left after meeting your bills to pay the debt management plan. I personally would certainly not use Stepchange, as they appeared judgemental, and wrote a total incorrect reason for my debt , as I said above which made it look as if it was the result of fiscal irresponsibility.

“So so life changing”

Written on: 11/03/2016 by Lydiadustbin (1 review written)

I can't thank stepchange enough. I am in severe financial difficulty and could have lost everything but now I have a plan in place and I can sleep at night. I felt very fiercely the sense of shame and guilt at having accrued debt when our family circumstances changed. Stepchange.org has literally saved my life. Special thanks to the advisor, who has a lovely and kind demeanour and so easy to talk to and explains everything well. Thank you from myself and my family. Debt soloution companies are just a stepping stone my advice would be if your debts are under £15000 attemp to lower your payments with your creditors if this fails apply for a debt release order via the CAB citizens advice bureau however as a last ditched effort i would go bankrupt debt solutions are waffle for e.g they agree a initial monthly fee for the first few months which is an admin fee and then subsequent payments which 80% gord to them for admin and 20% goes to your creditors they never manage to freeze intrest and the debt climbs. So your choice but i would rather a debt releif order or nankruptcy over the rest any day.
