My first ever mobile phone, where else in todays mobile phone market can you get a PAYG mobile phone with a free land line number ? NOWHERE. Yes it was a brick of a phone but back in the 90's most were i hear o2 are discontinuing this model i wonder why ? probably because they have been foolish enough to give a PAYG customer a free landline number to phone whenever they like, so in years to come this will be an icon amongst mobile phones along side the old nokia's....

Although, back in 2006, O2 said that the Philips C12 phones were being "switched off", they only switched off the original sim cards. These phones still work today, if you put in a working sim for the correct network. Ours still says BT Cellnet, but connects through O2. Similar to the Savvy, which also still works If we can get it unlocked, we may use it in place of our Moto F3....

I can't remember how long I have had my Philips C12 mobile phone. I use my free best friend units every month. It's been a god send.
Today, when I was trying to add credit, I was told it will be switched off. It is going to cost me £55 for a new phone from O2 (they say I will still get my free best friend), but I am not a happy bunny with O2!!! I love my little phone. I have dropped it countless times, sat on it, and generally beaten it up, and it's never given me a single problem....

I totally agree with this review. I've been told the same by O2. I'm going to complain like hell and threaten legal action if they don't supply a free or at least half price phone. If they still won't play ball I'll take my business elsewhere!!

O2 are supposed to be giving out new sim cards so the phone will work after 30th June but you must contact then. Read this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/working_lunch/5017786.stm.

I am devastated - not only are O2 doing away with the low-charge service, they are making the receiver (the phone) obsolete too. I shall now be making my patronage obsolete by switching to a different service provider - but shall mourn the loss of my dependable old friend the C12 - which I have had since 1999 and had never given me any problems.

i have had the same problem and i think it is disgusting the way that o2 has treated their customers. i got a text saying my phone was being turned off on the 30th of June, but it had been turned off on the 14th of june. i got told that if i wanted a new mobile phone it would have cost £30 pounds. tried to phone o2 today (14 June 2006), got through and was told that the other person had hung up. Not a very happy person.

The Philips C12 when it first came out on the market was the rage, but after time you get to relise how dated it is now. But look around at other pag tarriffs and you will not see one that gives you a free land line number, which makes this phone differ from the rest of the market. But if you get the chance to get your hands on a rare online C12 keep it as a second phone just cause of the free number, O2 would like to scrap the lot if they had their way, don't give them the chance....

My wife and I have had one of these Philips C12 mobile phones for about 4 years and have never, repeat never, had any bother with them. We mainly used them for text, probably not the quickest for that, and calls to family and friends who were on the same network.
Very cheap calls and text on the O2 'u' network. 5p a min and 5p text.(35p to landlines though) I don't think they do this anymore (shame).
A great phone if you want to use a phone for what it was designed for - talking. No good...

One out three still working despite the latest scam by O2 to systematicly remove these 'free phone number' dinosaurs from the airwaves.
Surely they can't be costing that much to the system?
Wonder how long the last one will go for?
Anyone else been zapped by the O2 'tarrif update' specialists?
Value for money and Overall rating values given for un-zapped sim card, working models and reception in the Welsh hills is excellent.
Shame we're being wiped out:[...

my phone has had 'contact your dealer' on the sreen 5 times now. Each time i send it to France where it gets 'fixed' ( reprogrammed for another set amount of call time) and comes back as new!Does anyone know of a way to get the SIM deprogrammed from the original handset? It costs £60 to fix, but because my friend all have them, it is worth it at 5p a min anytime.

I recieved the Phillips C12 mobile phone 1 year ago and i find it really hard to find the latest ring tones for it. Still being at school you are still under pressurre to keep up with the latest fashions, fads and crazes and me and my friend are always the ones left out. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! ...

Urrr.... They are really hard to find on the net for free because - THE SOFTWARE DOES NOT SUPPORT RINGTONES!!!

Overall, the Philips C12 is a pretty good mobile phone. No games or ringtones on it so that's a downfall for anyone who likes that personal touch, but it does have some very handy things like an alarm, calendar and calculator. I would recommend it to anyone who just needs a phone for emergencies or very rarely uses a mobile phone. Anyone who wants to get a phone that they can customize, don't get this....

The Philips C12 is a very average mobile phone. I agree it may be light but with hardly any good points I do not see any good reason the phone should be on the market. Nowadays it is a) ancient, b) inexpensive and c) Hardly anyone has it. The C12 is a home use phone really. Compared to a Nokia 7110 (my Phone) it is out of the question. The Ringtones are terrible and there are no games. Small screen, Not WAP - Compatable and no IR-da. Unrecommended....

after reading your (unhelpful) review, id just like to say that a) are ringtones that important to u and b)quit badmouthing it- its a good fone!!!!!!

I have to totally disagree with the old son. My fone was excellent it was the operator which was rubbish (Maureen Lipman)

The Philips C12 is a user friendly phone, with cheap calls and useful stuff like a calculator, alarm, etc. I like the size too, coz it's not too easy to lose!!
On the minus side, it's a bit outdated and the ringtones are a bit naff. If you could download your own ringtones and have loads of fascias for your phone, it'd be great. Also, I think more games would be good, as would the texting option, if the person's name who's texted you came before your text, rather than after....

There are no ringtones available yet, but it is a good phone to have. For example, you can phone a friend for free forever, and it charges up quickly. Sadly, there are no games on the phone, except the BioCalender. This phone should be bought by people who don't use it very much....

The phones nice, basic black but nice. The screen is a little too small, and the ringtones are pretty much near useless, but it's simple enough to use and doesn't confuse you too much. It's easy to hold, not so small that you feel you're talking into nothing, but not too large that it feels like a brick. It's a good little phone and charges okay, but with some faults that I think Philips need to get sorted. We paid for the phone, and it wasn't a cheap one, not massivly expensive but not cheap. So...

Its a nice little phone but a bit too heavy. I liked the
little pictures you could send to phones alike, but
otherwise it wasen't very good. The crashing is a problem
and the ring tones are pathetic....

I would recommend it to anyone after having one myself for the past half a year or so....

Generally an excellent phone, especially for the first time buyer. (Even my mum can use one!!). It's minor bad points are far outweighed by it's good ones.
After using this phone since it's release over a year ago, I can recommend it to anyone....

I bought the Virgin model for £40 including free insurance for a year. The phone is okay to use and has comparably good sound quality. It is however badly let down by its width size which is just too big for a phone these days. The ring tones have not changed from the ones on the old C12, and if you owned one of those, you'll remember how awful they were. If size matters, don't buy this phone; if it doesnt, buy it.
