    Highfield Grange Clacton Review
We stayed over 23 Oct for 3 days near the end of the season selecting a Bronze caravan (2 bed sleeps 6). We had some vouchers from a newspaper offer which reduced the damage from £180 to £100. The caravan was basic but adequate equipped with a gas fire which heated the lounge adequately. We were glad to have bought along a fan heater which was useful for heating the other rooms quickly and also hot water bottles. There was only 1 pillow per bed (bit stingy). The temperature of the shower was hard to adjust, but there was amble hot water. A 14 inch TV with 4 channels and DVD player does not dominate the lounge area.
The site is situated opposite a 24hr Tesco and 10 minutes drive from Clacton which has its own charm. There does seem to be a lot of advertising to encourage people to buy mobile homes on site we even got phoned up before we had even stayed there!
We were greeted at reception by a member of staff who would have been more suited to horse race commentating rather than giving directions around the park! On the other hand another member of staff was more helpful, and came to our caravan within 5 minutes to sort out bedding, demonstrate how to switch the gas fire on, and provided us gratis with a box of matches which we had forgotten. Most of the features of the park are situated around the entertainment centre, which boasts bar/restaurant with leather suites, large screen TV, pool tables, medium sized arcade, stage for evening entertainment and 2 pools. They do seem to provide a fair number of activities during the day but we only sat in on the lunchtime quiz which does what it says on the tin. Our boys enjoyed the play area with quite a large slide which kept them occupied for a couple of hours.
We had a Sunday carvery which was reasonable value (£6 for adults, £3 for kids) with choice of 3 meats (although beef looked a bit dry, you need to time your visit up to the counter), 3 veg, roasties and a rather salty gravy.
There is also a chippy on site which we found good value, tasty fish, mushy peas and chips. We went quite early in the evening but had to wait 5 mins for fish to be fried. Only 1 fryer is working (another review mentions that this is because of asbestos in the ceiling??!!), so I imagine in peak times you would have to wait a fair while.
An on-site shop is convenient, carries most of the things you may have forgotten and prices held down by virtue of the giant Tesco lurking just outside the park.
There are 2 pools, the larger pool was divided into 2 with the outside half shut due to the time of year and the 200 ft slide was not in use. Once you have more than 10 people in the divided up larger pool its starting to be crowded. This pool is on the cold side as the heating is also heating the water which is outside too! Cleanliness could have been better with leaves on the pool and girl hair in the water. The smaller pool is warm and good for little ones. Showers were cold. Watch out the lockers eat your money! So a mixed bag all in all.

We have just come back from Highfield Grange Holiday Park in Essex and although the weather was very favourable, this has to be the worst place I have ever stayed at. The swimming pool was unspeakably filthy!! There was black slime on the bottom, there were tiles missing from the side of the pool and loose ones on in the water.. everytime I swam there was hair inbetween my fingers!! Eeeyyeeww!! Unbelievably, the pool closed for lunch between 12.45pm and 2pm!!! The water slide which they advertis ...

Just returned from a fantastic holiday. Great facilities, children's entertainment second-to-none, good choice of food. Close to lots of amenities. Fantastic place to stay! Bad points, nothing.

I had 3 night break at Highfield Grange Holiday Park during Easter through the Sun holidays voucher scheme. It was not the warmest time of year but it was the only dates available, and our 3rd choice. Decided to go and only lasted 2 nights. It was the worst accomodation I have stayed in. You don't expect luxury but some hygiene would be nice. The caravan was sited next to a derelict (!) building that permanently had a light on and was quite scary at night. The oven was dripping in grease and all ...
