i have been after one of these for ages !took the plunge, looks fantastic, very accurate BUT from the box it had the spring twannnng from hell.almost put it up for sale until it was tuned.what a difference, no spring noise,i shoot pcp, spring and gas ram but this gun is now fast becoming a favorite, this is why i would recommend the gun [if you have it tuned]i have since found out this is common,so why for a top end gun dont hw do this ! but tuned first class in every way. this is the best break barrel ever, had it a few weeks now and its spot on, smooth cocking, easy loading crisp locking, well weighted, and looks fantastic. but thats not the best things about it, accurate, accurate, accurate, feel and hold spot on , this is an adults rifle and being a springer needs to be held correctly , i could,nt fault this rifle. 10 out of 10. If only I'd bought this rifle 32 years ago, I could have saved a lot of money and time. I've had 46 air rifles, some of the best money can buy, some of which cost the thick end of a grand but I've never had a rifle shoot as accurate as the one I have now. This one can hit a penny at 62 meters no problem, be it off a soft rest and can group five shots inside a drawing pin head sized circle at 50 meters regularly. (read more)

Weihrauchs are expensive air rifles, but being German they extremely well built (In other words, you get what you pay for!)
I have owned the HW98 rifle for well over 12 months and have found it to be quiet, accurate (although my ability is at question on that topic), and a beautiful looking rifle, but a bit on the heavy side.
After a day hunting in the field i have found the bull barrel on this rifle to be a bit to heavy for my liking, keeping it steady when shooting at long range...

Definitely the best springer I've ever owned. Superb accuracy and the stock enables the perfect sight picture. The excellent overall balance means that the weight is easily managed.the action is so smooth if I didn't know better I would think it was tuned. The cocking stroke is like silk and the recoil on firing is controllable and predictable, which helps the superb accuracy. What can anyone say about the reckord trigger unit that hasn't already been said. It is simply the very best trigger... (read more)

Weihrauchs most expensive break barrel. The Bull barrel is unfortunatly just a steel sleeve, adding to the weight, unlike air arms prosport, which is a shrouded, silenced barrel. The 98 stock is fantastic, being adjustable for perfect scope/eye alignment. The stippling on forend, and pistol grip aids grip, pity Weihrauch didn't offer this stock for their other models, even as an option. Under the stock, the 98 is basically a 95, minus Bull barrel. If you fancy tuning, good kit can be... (read more)

Well what can i say? Wow!
What an amazing gun!! Mine arrived two days ago (the .177 version) but i had to wait till today to get a chance to shoot this baby. I mounted my Hawke 3-9X50 scope and went into my garden to zero it in. After 10 minutes i was putting pellets into a bullseye (inch wide) at 35 yards. This gun is so accurate the only possible fault could be the shooter.
Next I come onto the looks. It is a beautiful gun. The stock just oozes with beauty. The adjustable stock puts your...

This Weihrauch HW98 is the best break barrel I have ever owned! It is a daddy of a springer, this gun puts itself in a class of its own. It ain't for wimps. If you want a cannon, get one of these. Great gun, it will last forever. (read more)

I'm about to take possession of my second Weihrauch HW98 gun for HFT and one for FT rigged via different scopes. This is a top gun and I would recommend to anyone who can handle the weight. The best thing is the stock. I'm a lefthander so struggle to find a good stock lock until I got this gun. That is, if you're a lefty, get one of these, you won't be sorry. (read more)

Perfect rifle for HFT shooting.
The best break barrel ever made (maybe Webley Longbow may be a competitor, but it's more expensive and with no adjustable stock).
Very good quality materials and precise made.

I have only just bought this Weihrauch HW98 due to a much needed upgrade from my training air rifel which was also 12FT lbs. This compared with my last is a dream. Hardly any recoil from the gun amazingly accurate, fully adjustable, two stage adjustable trigger, the works. Although a tad expensive definitely worth it as this is a true proffesionals gun. The weight distribution is great. The break on the barrel feels very strong and the heavy duty barrel gives this gun a gorgeous look. The... (read more)

The Weihrauch HW98 is very powerful at about 12 feet and it is very accurate all the time. The HW98 fires very smooth and looks great. I recommend this gun to any serious shooter. It is great value for money. I have a hawke 4x40 scope on it which stays set pefect every time. (read more)

I just bought my HW 98 following the sad demise of my HW 35 (40 years old no less RIP). I find that the rifles fireing action (despite previous comments on this page) is very smooth and not at all harsh. I hope that davidlday finds his rifle eases off with use.
I have shot many springers of late so my comments are balanced & un-biased so when comparing the HW 98 with an Air Arms TX200 I was pleasantly surprised to find the smoothness, low recoil & low noise levels of the Weihrauch out of...

The 98 is very heavy, this due to the bull barrel. Try fitting a 80 one as I did. Got the best of both top guns.

The hw 98 is an outstanding peace of German workmanship. I found that my 98 is easy to handle due to the fact I changed the barrel to a hw 80 which I had shortened to 12inches and added a logun sound moderater, this made the gun still accurate but easer to handle and gave me the best of both guns lighter and dedly even at 11.9 ftp.

The HW 98 is a great break-barrel gun. The barrel weight is no trivial thing and it adds a lot of heft to the gun as well as delaying the "bounce" and dampening of hold-sensitivity so common with spring piston air rifles. The adjustable stock allows adjustments to your physique. Because of the extra weight, the longer range accuracy of the gun seems very much on par with fixed barrel spring guns. The gun does benefit from an aftermarket tune - it is powerful and a bit harsh out of the... (read more)

I own a HW98 myself but I changed the barrel to the HW 80 then shortend it added a logun sound moderator and got the best of both world lighter gun with full 98/80 accuracy through in an illuminated cross hair set of 50by 9by 40 sites and what a gun all the pluses non of the minuses.

I loath to buy a pneumatic or multi-shot because of the extra baggage. This Weihrauch HW98 is a pleasing air rifle to own. Who hunts in the african veld with a semi automatic apart from the poachers? This is a good rifle if you believe in break necks. (read more)

Paul - yours is the only review on the HW98. I hate to cast aspersions, but "review" is stretching the meaning of the word a little. You've had at least another month with the gun, can't you be a bit more specific? You haven't told us much you know and I'm sure you could give us some useful information.

Bertie's Response to hitnmiss's Review
Written on: 18/01/2013
Having shot a few Weirauchs, and had an HW80 for some months, I've not the slightest doubt your description of your HW98 is all present and correct apart from one word...'best'.
What you are really saying is that it is 'best' for YOU! Yes, it IS an adult rifle and being so it would be totally inappropriate for a shooter who, by virtue of his physical attributes, would find it next door to impossible to handle. So if he had two air rifles to choose from - my much smaller and lighter IZH 61 and your larger and heavier HW98, the obvious choice would be my gun thus making it 'best' for HIM!
Needless to say, the HW98 would make a meal of the IZH 61 in hitting power over distance alone, but if our imagined shooter finds it impossible to SHOOT your HW98, then it is of no use to him and therefore on this occasion the much smaller and lighter Russian IZH 61 would be 'best'.
All that aside - I'm sure your claim, "this is the best break barrel ever" about the HW98 would be contested my many, and I have to say that I wouldn't know but I do thank you for your review!!
