Good Points: Extremely fast cutting, non oily, and truly fine finishes obtainable.
Bad Points: Can break if dropped, break if left wet during a freeze, and wear relatively quickly.Messy, in a water based way.
General comments: The Norton Waterstones Sharpening Tool can run out of true quickly if one's sharpening technique is poor; not utilising the entire face equally. However, I have found that they quickly taught me "far better" lapping and sharpening techniques than any other type of stone I have used giving my tools (chisels, planes etc.) a magnificent edge. I have a Norton India stone and coarse Norton diamond stone; the india stone is oily and much slower than the water stones. I don't use the india stone at all any more for carpentry tools, because of potential oil contamination on the wood (its one less thing to worry about!). I use the diamond stone to re-lap the water-stones occasionally which gives excellent results.I have the combination series; 4000/8000 - Will last my lifetime (hopefully) and is very fine indeed. No wire is left on the edge after finishing with this stone.220/1000 - The 220 cuts fast but wears fast too and mine already needs replacing, however, the need to use such a coarse grit is rare. The 1000 is excellent for most re-shaping work like nicked edges.
