    Good Points: Sharp image. Takes SD & XD. 5 x optical zoom. Easy menu system. Rechargeable battery


    Bad Points: Takes a while to lock on to focus, doesn't have a focus assist light, flash is a little weak for the amount of optical zoom offered.


    General comments: I originally bought this on a whim from my local camera shop for my sister as a Christmas present then looked it up on the internet and felt I had chosen the wrong one. I was also looking at the Olympus fe-370 which is very similar in spec so I delved deep and bought the Olympus to do some comparison shots. I used to work in Jacobs Photo and Video so know a bit about cameras, the main reason for opting for the J50 was the ease of use in menu system for my sister, the Olympus had the same kind of layout, they both have 5 x optical zoom and 8mp. The main differences I found were the following:-The J50 has an easier menu system-The Olympus is built better-The J50 takes SD & XD-The Olympus takes Micro SD & XD-The Olympus's Flash can be accidentally covered with your finger when taking a picture whereas the J50 doe not have this problem-The Olympus's flash can reach further than the J50Now when you search for reviews on the J50, like me you will find review after review of people saying it is a step backward due to the noise. But when testing it against the FE-370 it was surprisingly BETTER than the olympus, even when going through the manual modes to lower the ISO settings, the J50 performed better and the Olympus had a coarser grain of noise.The J50 is sharper on focus too though can take a few attempts to lock on to a target. Where as the Olympus is quick to lock on but is likely to be blurred when the shot is taken.If the J50 had the same skin tone reproduction as the Olympus then it would be a much better camera.For a camera that is under the £90 mark I think you could do a lot worse, if this is a first camera then it is a good introduction where you can eventually move on and spend £150 for better picture quality in less noise aspects.It has my vote in confidence as I will be giving it to my sister for her Christmas present
