“Worked for me!”

★★★★☆

written by JaidaNicholson164 on 01/11/2015

I am writing this review because I want people to know that I received a very good service from Benenden Health without any difficulties or issues. I joined Benenden Health last year with mild skepticism, not really convinced that I would be covered for varicose vein surgery. How wrong was I! Since seeing the GP in early August 2015, I have now had varicose vein surgery on both legs (last procedure 29/10/15) at Benenden Hospital, Kent. Having struggled with varicose veins for fourteen years, I was unable to pay for private treatment but by joining Benenden Health, I have received the treatment that I had so longed for. I wish I had joined Benenden Health sooner! Even though I have had my treatment, I will continue to pay the monthly subscription fee, so that someone else will be able to benefit from varicose vein surgery, just like me.

“GPs will not prescribe medications recommended”

★★★★☆

written by on 05/07/2014

I have been a member for many years and had a gall bladder removal op paid for by Benenden. Have always found staff to be very helpful. More recently was referred to see a Rheumatologist. My problem is that GP is refusing to prescribe medication recommended by consultant as the consulation was private and not NHS. I was told I would have to pay for medication privately which would be very costly. GP also refused to pay for blood tests needed. I understand this is becoming a widespread problem. So in effect you are able to see someone ahead of NHS queues but GP will not co-operate unless you go back through NHS referral. Very unfortunate because Benenden is in my opinion taking some of strain away from NHS.

Without knowing the exact details of your condition and the medication recommended by the specialist seen privately, it is difficult to comment fully in your case. However, it is important to bear in mind that GPs working in the NHS need to adhere to local prescribing guidelines and follow evidenced-based prescribing practices. Blood tests that GPs request are funded by the NHS and we all need to be mindful of using this precious resource appropriately. Sometimes, the medicines recommended by specialists may not be current first-line recommendations by NICE. These medications may incur extra costs and not necessarily because they are more effective than what is available for GPs to prescribe on the NHS. It would be useful for you to look up current guidelines for your condition to assist your understanding in your GP's decision. The GP's decision may not solely have been based on whether or not your specialist was seen in the private sector.

“Benenden Healthcare Health Insurance is low cost good...”

★★★★☆

written by graham12 on 24/02/2009

Benenden Healthcare Health Insurance is low cost good healthcare, that for us works. My family have claimed a number of times, and on every claim we have received good adivce plus good care via both there own hospital and there recommended local hospital. No bad points with the cost and care, how can there be.

paid for years, tried to use it due to a large cyst requiring removal , no, they wouldn't let me use it for that, I went private, £1100....I guess it could be helpful in jumping an NHS waiting list, but ???? is it worth the money ? might make you feel good as you've got the cover, but try using it when something goes wrong with your health. you get what you pay for....and Benenden is low cost.

There is no upper age limit and the price remains the same regardless of age or pre-existing medical conditions.
