“Waste of time & money”

Written on: 08/07/2014 by Raidenr240 (1 review written)

I have been a member of Benenden for seven years, I've asked for assistance three times for myself and once for my wife whom I added as a family member. On all four occasions I have been fobbed off with one excuse or another and I have had to return to my doctor. I have learnt the hard way paying for a service that is described as a not for profit organisation however they have made a tidy profit out of me. Please learn from my experience and don't throw your money away on this non existent… Read Full Review

“GPs will not prescribe medications recommended”

Written on: 05/07/2014

I have been a member for many years and had a gall bladder removal op paid for by Benenden. Have always found staff to be very helpful. More recently was referred to see a Rheumatologist. My problem is that GP is refusing to prescribe medication recommended by consultant as the consulation was private and not NHS. I was told I would have to pay for medication privately which would be very costly. GP also refused to pay for blood tests needed. I understand this is becoming a widespread problem… Read Full Review

“GP service is brilliant”

Written on: 14/06/2014 by sfmacdonald (1 review written)

I'm a relatively new member but I've already used their GP 24 hour service several times. It's so hard to get an nhs Gp appointment now and this service has been great and already saved me loads of time off work by using it. You just phone them and tell them when you would like to talk to a doctor, and then one phones you back. Each one that I spoke to was so helpful and spent time with me and saved me needing to see my own GP. Not that you ever see the same one twice these days! Benenden is… Read Full Review

“Value for money”

Written on: 10/06/2014 by Mecoy (2 reviews written)

I joined Benenden almost twenty years ago, and also added my children to my membership. Over the years they have helped me and my family several times and their service could never be faulted. In particular, years ago it was one of their Consultants who diagnosed my coeliac condition which two NHS consultants failed to spot! Now, as my kids are adults, I have encouraged them to take up their own membership. I am astonished at some of the dreadful reviews that have been posted here, as that has… Read Full Review

“Not worth it - go elsewhere ”

Written on: 29/05/2014 by Jagt (1 review written)

After paying in for about 9 years I approached them for assistance in relation to a prolapsed disc in my back. The delay for NHS treatment being an issue as I couldn't walk or stand for long and couldn't get back to work, after explainin all this to them and that I was in agony it was put to me they do not offer any treatment for back problems nor any pain relief, they may only provide consultation services. So here I still am, in agony awaiting NHS treatment whilst hoping my employer doesn't… Read Full Review

“Keep away!”

Written on: 16/05/2014 by urosano (1 review written)

I signed through my job. I tried many times to ask for a visit, but it's really made in a way that people cannot access easily. The whole point for people to go private is to skip the queues at gps. With benenden health, first you have to go to your go, the. He will have to approve the fact that you're going to receive a check up from a benenden doctor... But you have to go to Kent!! Yes, because they don't have partnered doctors in london....crazy but true. In all this, I had signed up my… Read Full Review

“Excellent service and care thanks a million Benenden”

Written on: 29/03/2014

I have been a member for years, What a service, from my first call to surgery all the staff were helpful caring and professional. I am in the recovery stage at home at the moment. I am so pleased that the NHS would not agree with their own gynaecologist to operate they just inserted a mirena coil. I believed this decision was made with a budget in mind. I felt it forced me to get a second opinion, I contacted Benenden and sought advice. I got a referral letter from my Gp within two days… Read Full Review

“Cancel your memberships ”

Written on: 24/03/2014 by qcDwyer78 (1 review written)

Having been a satisfied member of the Beneden Health Care system for 34 years, I have today cancelled my membership with them. I rang up initially to ask if they would agree for my 82 year old mum (who I have on the scheme and pay through my salary) to see an eye specialist as her optician had advised that she needed to do this urgently, I was told that my mum would have to have 'verbal' confirmation (not written) from her GP that he was in agreement for this to happen and if the waiting list… Read Full Review

“Only just took out the plan premiums up benefits down”

Written on: 22/03/2014 by JoaquinMassey152 (1 review written)

Decided to take out a plan and the levels of cover etc and monthly cost seemed reasonable for the money, but received a letter today telling me that my premiums are going up and the cover is reducing - definately not worth the money and I am sorry that I took out a policy. The new low levels against the monthly costs makes it a rip off you are better off saving the monthly cost and using it to pay for dental/optical cover as you will be better off! Very disappointed… Read Full Review

“Broken Promises”

Written on: 16/02/2014 by Dissapointedx10 (1 review written)

In October 2012 I found my bowel cancer had returned and as was inoperable and I would require Chemo treatment for as long as I could take it (the rest of my life). I approached Benenden to see if there was any financial support available as my journey to hospital is a 52 mile round trip. I was advised that I would be supported for a total amount of upto £5000 or Two years to cover parking and an amount towards fuel. Here we are 15 months down the line and support has been removed with out… Read Full Review

“Disappointing”

Written on: 05/02/2014 by Honestly232 (1 review written)

Unfortunately this insurance has been far too discretionary for us and am cancelling our memberships asap. Be careful as their 'website exclusions' are very, very incomplete. This may lead you to think you can obtain help until you place that call to find out you get the 'discretionary' decline to your request. Help with some testing was no problem but any help with corrective surgery, not publicly listed as an exclusion, was NOT forthcoming. Look beyond the 'glossy' aspirations on the sales… Read Full Review

“If what you want is covered its great!”

Written on: 21/01/2014

I had a knee op on Benenden and it was great. I would of had to wait 3months on NHS but had it completed within a month which was appreciated as it was starting to get really painful. I wish Benenden had a true health insurance policy available as once experiencing private hospital care it would be a shock to the system to return to the NHS not that I have bad experiences of the NHS it's just the speed and surroundings of private spoil you!… Read Full Review

“Only if you stick to their rules ...”

Written on: 16/01/2014

2012 seen by their Consultant re gall bladder op - quick apt, 6 weeks to op - they then forgot me. Seen again, have emphysema so Anaesthetist recommended op be done at local hospital 4 miles away with HDU in case lungs collapsed during laparoscopy. Wrote Benenden immediately re them funding op there. Been ill 3 mths, wanted me to wait 6-7 wks for their decision. If yes, start again with private hospital with HDU. If no, back on NHS list here (20 weeks). Surgeon offered me op on his NHS… Read Full Review

“Uncaring - look elsewhere”

Written on: 12/12/2013

My wife and I have been members for nearly 8 years and have claimed nothing other than £16 for a doctors certificate when my wife was first diagnosed with cervical cancer. I phoned Benenden in early December 2013 to say that my wife was now in a hospice with end stage cancer and would they consider a donation to the hospice in view of the fact that we have contributed about £1200 in subscriptions and have not being able to claim anything according to their exclusive small print over the three… Read Full Review

“Benenden- read the small print”

Written on: 15/11/2013

I have a cyst (ganglion) which was already diagnosed so when Benenden approved my consultation I thought I was going to get it sorted. Was I wrong. They are quite happy to pay up to £1500 pound for a diagnosis - that I already had - but I had to find my own consultant. Found one, got and appointment , confirmed the cyst was a ganglion and made arrangements to have a walk in/walk out procedure done the next week, simple? No. They would have paid if he had done it there and then but not the… Read Full Review

Further to this , I sent my diagnosis and bill. It was paid into my account quite quickly and I haven't heard a thing since. No advice whether or not they can offer surgery and nothing but advertising emails and junk mail through the post, Cancelling my policy and I now have an NHS appointment. More bother and stress than in was worth and I have paid into it for years with no claims. Now shopping around so any advise would be helpful.

“Benenden - Not to be trusted !”

Written on: 29/09/2013 by Joe1967 (1 review written)

After numerous NHS visits ie 4 docs, x ray, MRI scan, chronic pain specialist I turned to Benenden for a back problem I had and still have. Benenden authorised up to £1500 for CONSULTATION and DIAGNOSIS checks. The small print though stated that only necessary treatment given on the day of the consultation would be covered. This is preposterous ! Any treatment given is not normally provided on the day (I was at a private clinic). My Consultant diagnosed the problem and told me I would… Read Full Review

Nightmare. Same thing here. They will pay to diagnose something that is already diagnosed........ but not for the treatment unless it is done at the diagnosis. That is what happens at the VETS, not in a hospital. Find your own Consultant is another joke!

I was a BT engineer for over 30 years this takes me back to the post office telephone engineers era. Now having retiered I saw an advert for Benedan Health thought I would give it a go signed and paid my dues for 16 months, my wife is now in need of a knee operation having read the small print I find that all joint operations are excluded as are heart and vascular conditions if you have piles or a hernia they can fit you in.
