“Gynaecology operation at Benenden hospital”

I had a gynaecological operation at Benenden hospital in February 2013. I can not fault the hospital, staff or consultant. My treatment from day one of being referred to the operation and care afterwards has been fantastic. I would highly recommend Benenden hospital . (read more)

“What is covered ?”

Myself and my wife have been member for the past 15 years. During this time, we approched them twice, but we were not covered. I thought that I should review this and made enquiries. Firstly their hospital is some where in Kent. The operator did not know how I can get there by public transport, as she drives to work. For pound 8.70 a month what do you get these days? About half may go on the admin charges, so I simply cancelled my membership in December last year. (read more)

“Best Treatment Ever”

A few years ago I was very ill indeed I can only praise Benenden for their excellent care. If I had not been a member I would most possibly have died, because they provided all the tests sending me Harley Street and the London Hospital when I needed further examination. The NHS would not have done this,. The hospital was so clean the staff on the wards were they same ones for the whole of my time as an overnight patient and when I had the Op and I have seen the same ones when visiting... (read more)

“Complete waste of thousands of pounds”

Have been a member of this for nearly 20 years paying nearly £20 a month for my family. Approached them in December for first time as my wife needed an operation and faces a long NHS wait. Turned down in a blunt email. No phone call or advice and they completely ignore my emails to follow up for reasons. Feel really let down as must have paid in thousands over the years. A complete waste of time and money. And there seems to be no affective complaints procedure. (read more)

To follow up. After 8 weeks I finally got somebody to phone me, and admitting a mistake in the way I was treated, offered to start procedures to have my wife's operation done under the scheme. The waiting list was 8 weeks on top of the two months since my first contact. This was now, because of initial delay, longer than a long NHS queue.

My complaint was forwarded to a complaints department who eventually replied saying that I have no cause to complain as all treatment is discretionary. In my opinion, when you are spending £20 a month to cover your family, joining this organisation is basically a lottery that many members seem to lose. A waste of money. You might want to spend your hard earned cash on proper health insurance.

i took out the policy as it was so cheap i knew that things couldnt be as good as they appeared, i have had this policy for over a year and last month i was in an accident and crushed my knee which now needs replacing. i phoned up benenden as this is going to take at least 12-16 weeks on the NHS and i was told that i couldnt claim no explanation just that i would have to use the NHS i feel totally let down and will go with a company that is actually going to pay claims rather than say... Their literature states that hip and knee replacements are not covered but you can have 25% off the cost at their hospital. This should not be news to you as it is your responsibility to understand the deal before joining.
I am considering joining Benenden Health and therefore taking some time to review it in comparison with other healthcare providers. Your review is not helpful.

“We have used Benenden many more times than we would...”

We have used Benenden many more times than we would have wished over the past 30 years, for all members of the family. They have never been less than extremely helpful, polite, and supportive. The hospital is excellent especially when compared to NHS - I have experienced both. Benenden is especially useful for speeding up a referral to a consultant. I recommend them all the time to colleagues and friends and have never heard a negative comment before. I think it is exceptional value for... (read more)

I and my wife have been members for over two and a half years. I particularly have not enjoyed the best of health over this period but the NHS has been wonderful and timely in all aspects so I had no need to call on the services of Benenden untill recently. During the course of routine examinations it was discovered I had a Kidney stone many tests over many months followed before I was told that I was to be referred onward to another Hospital. Making a claim is easy. Telephone response is swift and helpful with written confirmation of help usually arriving the next day. This is low cost healthcare from a mutual, not-for-profit organization. It doesn't cover everyithing - but the cover provided is excellent value for money. I have never been disappointed. My family have claimed a number of times, and on every claim we have received good adivce plus good care via both there own hospital and there recommended local hospital. paid for years, tried to use it due to a large cyst requiring removal , no, they wouldn't let me use it for that, I went private, £1100....I guess it could be helpful in jumping an NHS waiting list, but ???? is it worth the money ? might make you feel good as you've got the cover, but try using it when something goes wrong with your health. you get what you pay for....and Benenden is low cost.
