“Waste of money”

In 2013 one of my spinal discs exploded leaving me with chronic and constant pain, I was unable to walk unaided and could only sit in a chair for a few minutes. I have been unable to work now for 2 years. About a month after this episode, my parents added me to their Benenden policy as they were told that there are no restrictions on pre-existing conditions. “Made situation worse ”

Twice now I have tried to actually use the service we have paid for. They have no list of approved consultants, however they have very tight regulations on exactly what qualifications a consultant must have and how they are registered. When it was me that needed treatment I was unable to find anyone that matched the criteria Beneden required. Benenden healthcare society care is not fit for purpose, I have been paying my subscriptions but when it came down to it in my hour of need Benenden were unhelpful and i was not covered. “What we will not cover.”

The website is punctuated by what we will not cover but scant on what we will cover. The reason for that has become clear to my wife and I as in actual fact very little is covered. My wife was informed by NHS that an angiogram was needed and we contacted Benenden in order that they help with costs if she went private to speed up the process. “Not fit for purpose in my case”

I sustained an arm injury in September 2014. In December 2014 I was still having trouble using my arm at work overseas. I decided that in my next month leave at home in the UK I would get a doctors referral as soon as possible to see a private consultant. This way when I return to work in January 2015 I may have had some diagnostic work done and be informed as to what is wrong and the best way forward. I have been a member for over 30 years, but never needed to use it until a few years ago when my children and I required diagnostic scans for a genetic condition. Benenden arranged for these to be carried out a local hospital for us. Then I required a hernia repair which I was told had a high risk of strangulation but the wait for NHS surgery was too long. “Going through process”

I am due to see the specialist on Monday and am a bit sceptical after reading some of the reviews. Initially when I called the call centre on the 20th November to chase things they said they had only got as far as the 12th with their mail, it's a good job my condition was not life threatening as my doctor had faxed the referral on the 7th. “Fantastic Support When Needed!”

I am two weeks post-operative following a total hysterectomy at one of Benenden's approved hospitals. I have been a member for many years and include five members of my family on the policy. I have used the service a couple of times for diagnostic appointments for myself and one of my parents in that time with no problems. Hi,

Without commenting on the particular case, we can confirm that on our website and during the joining process we give details of our cover, and what isn't covered.

We are able - on a discretionary basis - to fund diagnostic services (which may include early cancer diagnosis) but we're unable to cover cancer treatment itself. However, we do also have a service providing financial assistance for those impacted by cancer.

I have been a member of Benenden for seven years, I've asked for assistance three times for myself and once for my wife whom I added as a family member. On all four occasions I have been fobbed off with one excuse or another and I have had to return to my doctor. I have learnt the hard way paying for a service that is described as a not for profit organisation however they have made a tidy profit out of me. “GPs will not prescribe medications recommended”

I have been a member for many years and had a gall bladder removal op paid for by Benenden. Have always found staff to be very helpful. More recently was referred to see a Rheumatologist. My problem is that GP is refusing to prescribe medication recommended by consultant as the consulation was private and not NHS. I was told I would have to pay for medication privately which would be very costly. GP also refused to pay for blood tests needed. Without knowing the exact details of your condition and the medication recommended by the specialist seen privately, it is difficult to comment fully in your case. However, it is important to bear in mind that GPs working in the NHS need to adhere to local prescribing guidelines and follow evidenced-based prescribing practices. Blood tests that GPs request are funded by the NHS and we all need to be mindful of using this precious resource appropriately. Sometimes, the medicines recommended by specialists may not be current first-line recommendations by NICE. These medications may incur extra costs and not necessarily because they are more effective than what is available for GPs to prescribe on the NHS. It would be useful for you to look up current guidelines for your condition to assist your understanding in your GP's decision. The GP's decision may not solely have been based on whether or not your specialist was seen in the private sector.

“GP service is brilliant”

I'm a relatively new member but I've already used their GP 24 hour service several times. It's so hard to get an nhs Gp appointment now and this service has been great and already saved me loads of time off work by using it. You just phone them and tell them when you would like to talk to a doctor, and then one phones you back. “Not worth it - go elsewhere ”

After paying in for about 9 years I approached them for assistance in relation to a prolapsed disc in my back. The delay for NHS treatment being an issue as I couldn't walk or stand for long and couldn't get back to work, after explainin all this to them and that I was in agony it was put to me they do not offer any treatment for back problems nor any pain relief, they may only provide consultation services. I signed through my job. I tried many times to ask for a visit, but it's really made in a way that people cannot access easily. The whole point for people to go private is to skip the queues at gps.
