“Fantastic Support When Needed!”

I am two weeks post-operative following a total hysterectomy at one of Benenden's approved hospitals. I have been a member for many years and include five members of my family on the policy. I have used the service a couple of times for diagnostic appointments for myself and one of my parents in that time with no problems. “WHAT A LEGAL RIP OFF”

I belonged 35 year to Benenden, 4 years ago I was diagnosed with suspected prostate cancer I needed a biopsy would take a approximately about 3-4 weeks, informed Benenden I needed a biopsy as there was a 3-4 week wait with N H .The person who I spoke to said Benenden doesn't do anything to do with cancer.My advice is save the money and stick with the good old N H they certainly saved my life,as a employee of B T 38 year i have stopped payment 1 month ago.Benenden has lost its way. … Read Full Review

Hi,

Without commenting on the particular case, we can confirm that on our website and during the joining process we give details of our cover, and what isn't covered.

We are able - on a discretionary basis - to fund diagnostic services (which may include early cancer diagnosis) but we're unable to cover cancer treatment itself. However, we do also have a service providing financial assistance for those impacted by cancer.

“Waste of time & money”

I have been a member of Benenden for seven years, I've asked for assistance three times for myself and once for my wife whom I added as a family member. On all four occasions I have been fobbed off with one excuse or another and I have had to return to my doctor. I have learnt the hard way paying for a service that is described as a not for profit organisation however they have made a tidy profit out of me. “GPs will not prescribe medications recommended”

I have been a member for many years and had a gall bladder removal op paid for by Benenden. Have always found staff to be very helpful. More recently was referred to see a Rheumatologist. My problem is that GP is refusing to prescribe medication recommended by consultant as the consulation was private and not NHS. I was told I would have to pay for medication privately which would be very costly. GP also refused to pay for blood tests needed. Without knowing the exact details of your condition and the medication recommended by the specialist seen privately, it is difficult to comment fully in your case. However, it is important to bear in mind that GPs working in the NHS need to adhere to local prescribing guidelines and follow evidenced-based prescribing practices. Blood tests that GPs request are funded by the NHS and we all need to be mindful of using this precious resource appropriately. Sometimes, the medicines recommended by specialists may not be current first-line recommendations by NICE. These medications may incur extra costs and not necessarily because they are more effective than what is available for GPs to prescribe on the NHS. It would be useful for you to look up current guidelines for your condition to assist your understanding in your GP's decision. The GP's decision may not solely have been based on whether or not your specialist was seen in the private sector.

“subtotal hysterectomy”

I have just had a hysterectomy at beneden and have to say that I thought the staff there and surgeon who did the op are fantastic originally my op was booked for 11th June but had to be cancelled at last minute as surgeon was sick due to the fact I have young children and my job as a nanny I have had to reorganisemy kids and the lady I look afters kids but luckily beneden had me in on 24th june so didnt cause too much inconvenience it has been 1 week since op and already feel much better in… Read Full Review

“GP service is brilliant”

I'm a relatively new member but I've already used their GP 24 hour service several times. It's so hard to get an nhs Gp appointment now and this service has been great and already saved me loads of time off work by using it. You just phone them and tell them when you would like to talk to a doctor, and then one phones you back. “Not worth it - go elsewhere ”

After paying in for about 9 years I approached them for assistance in relation to a prolapsed disc in my back. The delay for NHS treatment being an issue as I couldn't walk or stand for long and couldn't get back to work, after explainin all this to them and that I was in agony it was put to me they do not offer any treatment for back problems nor any pain relief, they may only provide consultation services. I signed through my job. I tried many times to ask for a visit, but it's really made in a way that people cannot access easily. The whole point for people to go private is to skip the queues at gps. “Excellent service and care thanks a million Benenden”

I have been a member for years, What a service, from my first call to surgery all the staff were helpful caring and professional. I am in the recovery stage at home at the moment. I am so pleased that the NHS would not agree with their own gynaecologist to operate they just inserted a mirena coil. I believed this decision was made with a budget in mind. “Only just took out the plan premiums up benefits down”

Decided to take out a plan and the levels of cover etc and monthly cost seemed reasonable for the money, but received a letter today telling me that my premiums are going up and the cover is reducing - definately not worth the money and I am sorry that I took out a policy. The new low levels against the monthly costs makes it a rip off you are better off saving the monthly cost and using it to pay for dental/optical cover as you will be better off! In October 2012 I found my bowel cancer had returned and as was inoperable and I would require Chemo treatment for as long as I could take it (the rest of my life). I approached Benenden to see if there was any financial support available as my journey to hospital is a 52 mile round trip. Unfortunately this insurance has been far too discretionary for us and am cancelling our memberships asap. Be careful as their 'website exclusions' are very, very incomplete. This may lead you to think you can obtain help until you place that call to find out you get the 'discretionary' decline to your request. Help with some testing was no problem but any help with corrective surgery, not publicly listed as an exclusion, was NOT forthcoming. I had a knee op on Benenden and it was great. I would of had to wait 3months on NHS but had it completed within a month which was appreciated as it was starting to get really painful. “Only if you stick to their rules ...”

2012 seen by their Consultant re gall bladder op - quick apt, 6 weeks to op - they then forgot me. Seen again, have emphysema so Anaesthetist recommended op be done at local hospital 4 miles away with HDU in case lungs collapsed during laparoscopy. Wrote Benenden immediately re them funding op there. Been ill 3 mths, wanted me to wait 6-7 wks for their decision. If yes, start again with private hospital with HDU.
