Good Points: The type of wood used for the body has good resonance when the bass is played unplugged; the electronics produce a wide range of tones that is synonymous with jazz basses and the 'sound' of the 'Jaco' era.

Bad Points: The machine heads do not permit 'fine tuning' of the strings owing to their stiff action; the intonation is difficult to set, thus, notes from the 12th fret upwards are at variance with their reference.

General comments: The Vintage Icon VJ96 is a remarkably pleasing instrument. An ebony fretboard might have further enhanced the tone of the instrument, but its inclusion might have made it less accessible to a discerning public. Was it neccessary to reproduce the iconic look of Jaco Pastorius' bass?

The VJ96 is aesthetically, rather appealing, but it is the combination of materials and electronics that differentiates this instrument from others of its type. In the hands of a professional, it can become evocative of a bygone era; in the hands of an aspirant, it will enthuse and inspire.
