Contrary to other reviews I have found this mower to be reliable and to produce a good result, easy starting and cuts in most conditoons. I have fairly large garden and it copes well. I would recomend, if you have not had a petrol mower read the instruction booklet before use.
    Good
    reliable, easy starter
    Bad
    grass box fills rapidly
Find local dealer if you are going to have it serviced and find out cost.
Service is about 25% of cost of mower, so if you are thinking about changing plug and oil do it youself.

I have had this mower for over 2 years, it's never gone wrong or broken anything, it cuts damp and even wet grass up to 5 inches high. My lawn isn't flat but the power drive works very well pulls along nicely. Would say my Lawn areas constitute a large garden and this mower is just about right as a full tank does more than enough cutting. Starts very easily even after 2 years, Pull Start cord and handle still original. Mine is a Briggs and Stratton engine, runs very well. Engine has only ev ...

I too thought Mountfield was a decent make. The plastic block that retains the cable outer sleeves for the self-propel and deadman's handle cables has simply shattered as the effort involved to lift the lower handle is quite excessive. The started cord snapped after about two weeks.Previous lawn mower lasted 10 years (Honda engine) but the body rusted away.Totally unimpressed with this effort.

Poor quality product, the only good point about a Mountfield mower is the Briggs and stratton engine. As for the rest of the mower it will not mow if the grass is slightly damp.

I bought this mower from B & Q 5 months ago for over £200, thinking that Mountfield was a decent make and that B & Q were a reputable retailer, how wrong I was. The first time it was used the plastic starter handle broke, then the pull cord guide and hand wheel broke and now the accelerator has stopped working. B & Q have referred us to Mountfield. Mountfield have referred us to B & Q because that's where I bought it. On 2 separate occasions Mountfield have sent replacement parts for the ...

I bought this Mountfield SP474 because I had had a similar mountfield model for the last 10 years.
I don't know what has happened but this one is nothing like as good.
I have had it now for 2 months.
I have had two plastic starter handles break and am now told that "it must be the way you start it". Yet the one I have had for 10 years still has it's original handle!
B&Q say it's nothing to do with them (they won't take it back) and to contact the manufacturer, who says that I will have to buy a ...

Bought this Mountfield mower 8 months ago from B&Q. Had problems with the cutting height dropping down to lowest level after going over a bump. Today it did the same thing when I was going over a concrete inspection cover set into my lawn. The blade 'snicked' the edge of the cover causing the engine to stop. Couldn't start the engine, couldn't even pull the starting cord. I dismantled the engine to find that the main shaft that goes through the engine to the blade was bent beyond repair. The eng ...

B&Q were most reluctant to take the machine back. Were told to take it to different Mountfield repair centres to be looked at. As machine was bought the day before, I didn't feel that the machine was worth keeping. Avoid this machine at all costs.

I am replacing my Mountfield SP474 before the warranty runs out because of the hassle I've had so far. Was told it was a Honda engine - turns out to be chinese unit that is hopeless on all but the neatest grass.
Not very reliable - 1st 6 months faults so far are -
Faulty starter had to be replaced
Engine detuned itself and kept cutting out, returned to local dealer to fix.
Plastic wheel bearings replaced by local dealer.
Squeaky annoying wheels need constant WD40 applied.

    My advice: a stay c ...

If your thinking of going to B& Q to buy a Mountfield SP474 petrol lawn mower, don't! Unless like me you want to spend hours on the phone and writing letters of complaint. Save yourself a lot of bother and don't bother! Go somewhere else. If you can, save up a bit more and buy a better quality mower off someone else. The customer service I received from B&Q was dreadful. Recommend to a friend? You're having a laugh!
