“Does not work”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 22/07/2013

I bought one and it worked once. Last week I went to use it again and it won't even turn with new batteries in it. My guarantee is up so just have to dump it. Would have been better off drinking it.

“Not fit for purpose in any way”

written by HandyHeroLtd on 22/12/2011

Absolutely useless product. Hammerite should be ashamed. It simply does not work. Do not waste you money. I will be writing to them directly asking for an explanation and refund which will be carbon copied to trading standards.

“Hammerite Metalmaster woks fine, but ...”

★★★☆☆

written by yayo on 05/09/2011

At the beginning, and after doing all fine as described in the document, paint did not escape from the canister. I pulled it out and in several times to check what happened. So I pushed on the head of the canister to oblige the paint to go to the hoses. Then put the canister into the gun, and it worked correctly. However, while using, the paint comes from a few hoses, providing a thin flow of paint. When pushing on the cover of canister with the 2nd hand, the flow comes wider. The problem is that the 2 fingers inside the gun (connected to the trigger) do not push enough on the canister head to allow the correct flow of paint. Moreover, if you don't push to the max on the trigger, as the system is mechanic, you limit the flow available. Once you have understood this problem, this tool works fine. Now, the only problem that remains on this gun is its power consumption : you cannot use accus but only cells, and they don't work long (already 4* 4 cells and I only did the half oh my job). I hope my comment will help those who have problems with their paint gun. Alex

“I cannot believe I have left this contraption sitting...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 31/03/2011

I cannot believe I have left this contraption sitting on the shelf in my garage for so long! I have just read all the reviews, I too could not get the gun to work (paint would not come out of canisters), and took it back to Focus, where they replaced my paint canisters, for me to take home and try again, as I could not get any paint out of either of the original ones. I followed the instructions, and all the troubleshooting instructions, rubbish.
I am now going back to Focus, armed with my reciept, and knowledge that I am not the only one who thinks this is a complete con, and waste of money.

Great idea, terrible product! Perhaps it worked fine after much tweaking in the lab, but all I got was problem after problem. I began to think it was my fault, and read and re-read instructions carefully. All to no avail......When I returned it to the very large DIY store, the assistant told me that every one sold had been returned!!!! say no more, so I give one star for the principle only. I own a gates and railings company and this device, had it worked would have saved me 40-50% of time spent painting with roller. Also the cost of re-fills is astronomical per litre; so back to the roller.

Same experiences as pretty much everyone else. Drove miles out of my way to find a Metalmaster and then spent a frustrating afternoon trying to get it to work before it eventually dawned on me that it was working all along - it just hadn't occurred to me that the thing would be so rubbish. The claims on the box hadn't exactly prepared me for the pathetic, inconsistent mist of paint that was the Metalmaster's best effort. It would take me 4 times longer to do the job I'm doing with a Metalmaster than it would with a brush, and a brush would give me a better finish. How this thing made it to a production line is beyond me.

Bought one, couldn't get the paint to come out of the cannister, took it back.
Got the second one home, and again no paint coming out of the cannister.
I'm off to B&Q to return the metal master and the cannister....my other half's got a brush in hand. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.

This review is more for owners of this piece of equipment.
At first we had experienced the same problems as everyone else who has reviewed this gun so it was left on a shelf for ages.
With a little bit of cowboy thinking we soldered a 6V charger/transformer to the gun and it now works really well. Also warming the paint cans up for a few minutes also helps with the paint flow.
When this product works its very good, its just a shame that the people at Hammerite have poorly designed this. Why there is no mains adaptor I'll never know

No mains adapter to make it more portable ? Not everyone has power by their railings ?
Mine worked perfectly the first time but not the second time. Will try the soldering a transformer option...nothing to loose as it's out of guarantee

What a load of rubbish, expensive and slow. I purchased three cannisters of paint and on the third attempt had a mist that was so fine I couldn't even see it. The batteries supplied were flat so its obviously been on the shelf for a very long time!

Doesn't do what it says and takes 10 times longer than a paint brush. Whatever you do don't buy this item! Hammerite you should be ashamed of yourselves I hope that your paint is better!

You have to rate this but it deserves no stars at all.

written by Janie8 on 06/07/2010

Like everybody else, we bought the Hammerite Metalmaster and were really looking forward to a simple and quick job painting some railings. We thought the item was faulty and returned it to Focus. They tried it and failed. They opened another box and tried that one, but again it failed. The Manageress was most simpathetic and apologised. She even gave us a free can of Hammerite paint as she felt sorry that we now had to spend a lot of time using the traditional paint and brush. Also, she refunded the cost in full without a receipt so for the person who wrote earlier that he had lost his, it might be worth a try! Well done to Focus though for top customer service.

written by on 03/06/2010

I can echo some of the other reviews. Took the first one back because despite the test LED light coming on and the machine vibrating as it was supposed to no paint came out. Thought it was a faulty cannister but I took both that and the machine back to B & Q and exchanged both. On The second machine the LED didn't even come on. Back to B & Q for a refund and to buy some brushes. Rubbish, Rubbish, Rubbish!

I also spent 3 hours attempting to paint a 7 inch high railing which was 3 metres long.

Like previous posts... I didn't get a fine mist but 3 fine threads of paint which succeeded in making the fence post stripy!!!!
Would take you 100 years to get a decent covering.

The idea sounds efficient and simple but in essence is poor quality and simply doesn't work... DONT BUY IT --- Use a can of spray paint instead.

I wrote to ICI paints a week ago and haven't had the courtsy of a response.

Same as most people I'm afraid. Spent ages trying to unblock what was clearly a faulty canister.... and I stupidly threw my Focus receipt away the other day. Feel duped by the claims this product made. No wonder they were being sold at a discount. Still an expensive mistake though!

The idea is great. The reality is pathetic. This product falls far short of the claims made on the box and the manufacturer should be called to account.
A paintbrush would have been simpler, cheaper and quicker.

“It's about twice as quick as using a brush, the paint...”

★★★☆☆

written by ASM on 04/04/2010

It's about twice as quick as using a brush, the paint does drip a little where it accumulates but if you lay down some old towels that is not an issue. It did a pretty good job but you can't get into the "nooks & crannies' like you can with a brush and strangely when you try and use a brush this paint does not cover well?

One of my paint canisters wouldn't work so I took the plastic head of the the one that did work and fitted it to the new can and that fixed it.

Batteries do get used up quickly, I used 2.5 sets of 4 on a gate and 5m of railings plus two paint canisters.

In summary it's an expensive way to get an ok job done and in retrospect I should have used a brush.

written by on 19/10/2009

Bought this from B&Q based on the ability to paint my railings 4 times faster as claimed on the box. Not true - extremely slow going. After a while it then begins to drip blobs of paint from the gun onto the ground and shoots fine jets of paint causing streaky markings not microscopic droplets. The ability for 1 can of paint to cover 12m of railings 1 m high is a complete myth. Eats batteries. In short - complete rubbish. Don't waste your time. This product is a blatant breach of the trade descriptions act.

I bought this machine with high hopes. It is a good idea but it just doesn't work. It eats batteries at an incredible rate, and half of the paint cans I bought were faulty. It doesn't spray the back of the fence and does a poor job on the front. Back to the paint brush I'm afraid

Purchased the metalmaster as we have a large expanse of railings around our property. Took the 1st back as we thought the item was faulty. Making the right noise however not despencing the paint. Tried the other unit, same issue..don't buy this item!
