Student Loans Company are a complete shambles. They lost financial evidence we sent them, wrote letters to the wrong parent asking for the wrong information, and refused to admit their errors until only four weeks before the start of term. The situation is still unresolved and despite now having sent them the information they requested THREE TIMES we are still no nearer getting things sorted out. Quite the worst customer support I have ever experienced. (read more)

My daughter is in the same situation, however, we have been trying to get this sorted since Sept 12. Like you, they ask for wrong information, and lose it. We have sent every piece of evidence that they have asked for and yet my daughter is still waiting four months later. When she called them yesterday she was told to check back in a few days. There seems to be no one high up that you can speak to and every time you call you speak to a different person who tells you something different too!

I went to University in 2003 but had to for medical reasons leave after the 1st year. I cannot see how the Student Loan Company are getting away with charging interest on loans year on year on year. My original Loan (taken to pay towards accomodation costs) of £3000 now stands at nearly £4000 because of interest being added year on year. I have never yet earnt over the £15K threshold so never paid anything back. I have now started a family and only earn £10K p/y. Surely to Student Loan... (read more)

Student Loans Company and its various arms such as Student Finance England has amended its web-site to make e-mail complaints difficult. There used to be a link, now there isn't. If you press the organisation they tell you it is customer_complaints@slc.co.uk.

The on-line application system doesn't work in England if you have moved recently from Wales and have any records created there.

The site uses bright colours and simple links but takes you on a circular route if you want to... (read more)

I graduated from University in 2006 and borrowed just over £10,000. They have put an interest of £2662 in a space of 3 years. I don't really see this as being 'virtually interest free' and HM customs and revenue think a repayment of £133 a year is a substantial amount to pay off your student loan. It seems pathetic that the basic repayment does not even cover the interest a year. This Student Loans Company seem to be making a mint from the poor students! (read more)

A student loan is an easy, low-interest way to fund your studies.
Interest rates on student loans are much lower than average loans and do not need to be paid You until the April after you ' ve finished your course, and even then until you are earning over a set minimum threshold, currently set at £15 000. Make sure you fully understand what you're signing up to by visiting a site which has loads of easy to understand guides to student loans. (read more)

The Student Loan Company provide for some funds for study, otherwise you're on your own.
Despite recent partial relaxation (previously 55 years old cut-off), still might not be right for the 59 year old mature student, 3 or 4 year degree course and you're back on your own after 60. This, despite Government encouragement to work until 70+, and for males, no State Pension until 65. Distinct lack of continuity based on NOT spending money.
Good job I was frugal and saved before being prematurely... (read more)

“Student loans are rubbish!!!!!!!!!!!!! ”

Written on: 20/01/2004 by Boo boo bee doo (3 reviews written)

Student loans are rubbish!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But you have to get one unless you are rich. The interest rate is low and you don't have to pay it back untill you are earning x amount per year, but most of it is cruelly taken away by the mysterious keeper of the ale and whats left has to pay for tution fees, solid food and shelter. Plus they don't send you any statements and start to take the money straight from your pay packet without notifying you, just when you were trying to save up for a... (read more)

When loans were first introduced they were trumpeted by politicians as being tax free which was obviously a lie. Now we are told that the interest rate is supposed to be the rate of inflation so that in 'Real Terms' students repay the same amount as they borrowed. The current rate is 3.1% inflation is 1.7% I have written to every political party asking for an opinion / explanation of this but have received no replies. Am I missing something?
