I travel a lot and so have started listening to audio books! They are much better than listening to music. Overall, I really enjoyed this The Kid: A True Story audio book - however, as much as I want to sympathize with Kevin, I'm finding it really hard! Being born into the era that we were has always been difficult - we have all (of a similar age) faced poverty and a very tough life.
I was born with phsyical disabilities and my parents had me institutionalised at a very early age (4, I...

What a fantastic book. It is sad yet uplifting to know that this poor child survived such an awful childhood. He made the best of his life despite the horrific circumstances he had to grow up in. I cried so much and really felt his pain although I could never know how he really felt. Best of luck to him and his family. The survivors of abuse are real heroes. (read more)

Kevin gave very good detail at just how bad his upbringing was, you seemed to be there with him when he was getting his beatings of his parents, especially his mother, who is a totally demented woman and should never have been allowed to have children, ever. I totally admire Kevin how he triumphed over a truly terrible start in life, no doubt he is still living with the painful memories of his past because there are just some things you can never forget but you can learn to live them, hence... Just a thought, in case there's any confusion, the sequel was titled 'Moving On' when it was first published. Later the title was changed to 'The Kid moves On'. I have written a review on it here at the centre in case you are interested.

I'm sure you will enjoy it as much as I did, Victoria. I wish Kevin would write a further Biography on life as it is now. He has written a couple of fiction books (I haven't read them), but I think his own life and writings would be of far greater interest. He writes so very well.

An amazing book, I have always been interested in fostering and picked up this book to read about a child's experiences of being in foster care. I was totally heartbroken, I am so saddened that a child could be let down by so many people. I am only a few years younger than Kevin and read with disbelief that this happened during my childhood in the seventies and eighties.
It has only strengthened my desire to foster in the future and would like to thank Kevin for this and one day maybe I...

It is reassuring to know that I'm not the only one.
I'm 29 now, have a great job. Which I have to give credit to my old boss for pushing me and telling me I could do it. Without him I would still be the girl with no confidence, still believing all the things my parents said I was. Kevin Lewis, The Kid: A True Story shows that not everyones world is full of happiness. Not everyones life is lived perfectly and even though we may think we have it hard it can always be worse for other people. The Kid: A True Story by Kevin Lewis was so well written. It had a no nonsense approach and lacked self pity. In my opinion this should be on all senior schools bookshelves, and most definitely on all social workers reading curriculum.

After reading Kevin's story and how he was coping with the debt problems among his many others, I could not put this book down. It has moved me to read many other books about children coming through hardships of lost childhood and trying to ensure as best as they can that their children do not have to suffer the same. It also shows that reality however bad some suffer for it the courge they show in helping others can only be rewarded when people buy these books and read them. If they learn something from it then Kevin and the others who write about their life stories will be rewarded ten fold. I am looking forward to reading his new book out now called respectfully "Moving on"
