Good Points: Surprisingly nippy for such a big scooter, handles well even at slow speeds. Comfortable with good storage space. Easy to live with. Fun, reliable, torquey engine. Good fuel economy. Excellent value for money.

Bad Points: A bit heavy to wheel around but this will be the same with all larger capacity scooters.
Screen is very noisy and could be a little taller or have a laminar lip to improve air flow.

General comments: I think the Piaggio X8's in general are underrated scooters. I certainly didn't really think much of them before I test rode the X8 400ie. However the test ride totally changed my opinion. The X8 is an excellent scooter and the 400 is probably the best of the bunch with it's torquey fuel injected, Euro 3 compliant engine. It's powerful and has the power just where you need it for overtaking. A slight hesitation at lower revs when pulling away is the only criticism I have of the engine, but this is probably more a transmission/gearing thing. The engine is smooth and leads to a nice ride quality.
The X8 falls somewhere between the more touring X9 and the sporty Nexus in handling. It's taut, and surprisingly flickable for such a lardy looking scooter. On the move the weight and size disappears and it is a good fun ride, with good grip and can handle being pushed quite well.
The X8 400 is a good touring machine, it's comfortable. I rode 300 miles on my second day of ownership and enjoyed every single minute of it.
The build quality is good, the panel fit appears excellent on my 2 year old machine. The only criticism here is Piaggio's use of cheap black screws which will rust if not looked after. There are a few rusty ones under the footwell rubbers on mine where it's damp, and on the water pump but the rest appear fine so far.
I am extremely happy with my purchase and would highly recommend the X8 400ie.
The new XEvo models are really very similar to the older X8's with only a few styling tweaks and a different dashboard arrangement separating them. I would expect the XEvo models to be every bit as good as the X8.

The Piaggio X8 is a good all rounder, for commuting, shopping or distances, easy to live with.
Its not a complicated scoot to service after the warranty period, it is possible to do a lot of jobs yourself, belt changes, oil. pads, valve gaps etc.
The bigger new 'Master' engines on the X8, Xevo and Fuoco have an advanced closed loop fuel induction system that eradicates the fuel in the oil problem of earlier engines used on the Gilera 460cc machines, and is used on the Peugeot Satelis as well.
