“Easy to use, good colour, no reaction”

★★★★☆

written by PaolaMartin1961 on 09/11/2016

I have been using Sanotint Light Golden Chesnut for well over a year. Ideally, I would like to stop dying my hair altogether and "love the grey", but I am not there yet. The stories that I have read from reviewers about serious reactions to Sanotint Light are horrifying. There are clearly different degrees of sensitivity to products, and different allergens and chemicals to which people react. I would like to say that I tried Sanotint Light after a serious reaction to a mainstream "natural" hair dye without ammonia. I have not had reactions to Sanotint Light, and I find it quite easy to use. I often mix only half the amount and touch up my roots. The reason I wanted to write a review is because you can't assume that you will react to it unless you try it. Obviously you should do a patch test first. But if you are struggling with your vanity as I am, and want to try something less toxic, it may be the solution for you.

“It's no good!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 09/06/2015

im severely allergic to ppd. I switched from INOA to Sanotint after extensive online search. I bought Sanotint Light no 75 from Life Oharmacy, Dubai. I felt immediate itching on the scalp upon application. After 35 minutes, my tongue had started swelling and I had to rush to the emergency. I could have had a disastrous ending this Saturday had it not been for the medical center within walking distance from my house. Sanotint light has PPD. I am hugely disappointed. The doc has categorically stated that I cannot use any color on my hair now. My chemical patch test also revealed that I am allergic to Henna. I'm planning not to color my hair any more. (Even though I am hundred percent prematurely grey) Any suggestions?

“Saved my hair !”

★★★★★

written by Lorelaiu1951 on 09/01/2015

I used to have a very sensitive scalp and very dry, damaged hair. It would come out with handfulls and it started to freak me out- big time. I mean...who wouldnt freak out? I decided to give up on my favourite L'oreal products cuz I thought that maybe the chamicals in dyes, shampoos, masks etc are to blame. I started to look for a more natural and mild alternative and was recommended Sanotint products. I've been using them for 1,5 years now ( Sanotint Light, shampoos and masks)and it literally transformed my hair. Their products are quite hard to find in Uk. xx

“not ppd free”

★☆☆☆☆

written by bubbles_ca on 12/12/2014

I am allergic to PPD. I wanted to try this product because it states on the front of the box that it is PPD free. If you look under the ingredients on the top of the box it states in very small writing that it contains PPD. Had it patch tested at the dematologist. It caused my skin to blister!!! False advertising and definitely not PPD free!!! I think it is terrible that a company could be soo negligent advertising it's product as safe, when it is NOT SAFE AT ALL for people with ppd allergies!

“Reacted with welts and scalp sores”

★☆☆☆☆

written by JensenHaynes on 12/11/2014

Because of the fact that santo tint says they are ppd free which causes the reaction to the scalp, swelled eyes shut and sores/scabs all over my neck was a crock. I reacted the same like any other hair dye. Very discounted. Back to the drawing board for me. I have suffered for 10 years now and each time progressively it gets worse and worse. Thought this product would be good, however, I was wrong.

I have been using regular hair colours with out any reaction from last 10 years and but recently I had bad reaction. So I was exploring different options. I first tried without ammonia, but still had allergic reactions. Then tried another form of henna, but it just turns the hair colour into little brown colour after keeping for few hours and it's a pain to keep the henna for such a long time(usually I keep it for 2hrs). I haven't give up and I was keep browsing then I came across Sanotint Light. I did a 24h test and there was no reaction :) Of course, then I coloured my hair and let it go for 25 min and........it was perfect! No more grey hair and no reaction. I am writing this after 2 days of colouring, it looks very good with out any reaction! I buy on vivasanwebshop.eu. They have good prices and very often useful presents

“Looks natural”

★★★★☆

written by on 20/12/2013

I've been using Sanotint since 2005, I think. I love it because it looks natural on hair and I noticed that the condition of my hair improves when I use Sanotint. I decided to right this review to let folks know that you don't have to pay a big price on Sanotint. You can get it for $13.97 at essentialoilcollection.com if you get their discount card which is free to get, but you have to place an order that qualifies you for a discount card (I think any order of 5 products qualifies you for one), just let them know that you want a discount card. You will have to pay a full price for your first order though. I hope this information will help someone. Also I found a few new shades by mixing 2 or 3 shades together. It's awesome! I love it! Tip: if you are allergic to chemicals make sure you use Sanotint light, I tried Sanotint Classic once and it has PPD in it, it gave me rash. I perform patch test almost every time I color my hair just to make sure it's not gonna cause a reaction.

Hi! Your reaction to this product sounds exactly like how I react to Sanotint, Sanotint Light, and any general hair colour product. I am allergic to PPD and peroxide, and while Sanotint Light claims to contain no PPD, it does contain peroxide, in order for it to be a permanent colour. I am just curious to know, seeing as your reaction sounds as extreme as mine, if any other products have worked for you? I'm finding it very difficult to source a permanent hair colour solution that doesnt contain all the nasties. Thanks for any suggestion / advice you might have! :)

“If I could give it a minus star I would”

written by on 23/03/2013

I'm allergic to hair dyes and have always had a reaction to them. As I've been going greyer every year I thought I'd try this product as it doesn't contain PPD's. now I don't apply direct to my head I take large sections of hair and comb it on trying not to touch my scalp and ears. After applying I really liked the colour and showed no sign of a reaction. 3 days later I have severe burns and weeping around my hairline. Woke up this morning and both eyes are swollen to the point of closing. Been taking piriton to help with the itching and using an ice pack to try and reduce swelling. This is the worse reaction I have ever had. My advice stay well clear of this product, I coloured my hair cause I wanted to feel good now I look awful!!!! I shall be growing old gracefully from now on.

“Still allergic...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by boomzilla on 08/03/2013

I bought this hair dye because of it's allergy description. "Extremely low risk." I developed a sudden allergy to hair dye after getting a tattoo and several people suggested this brand. I did a skin test and still didn't get an allergic reaction. I experienced an allergic reaction only after I had washed all of the dye out of my hair and it began to dry. My skin test spot even flared up. Now I've got hives all over my head. They're not as bad as they were with regular hair dye, but they're still there. I'm not sure why it took so long. It would all have been alright, but my I bought the black dye and it only tinted my hair darker, not black.

“Worst reaction ever...it is not ppd free..do not use this”

written by cjreview223 on 06/03/2013

I became allergic to hair dye many years ago and have search for a ppd free product . THIS IS NOT PPD free. I can use stains and temporary color...never permanent or semi. Thank god I did a patch test or I would be in hospital. The top dermatologist here confirmed it was a ppd reaction. Be warned!

Only issue is this product in not available in any regular stores in US, so I ordered it from Canada and it is little expensive including tax.

“Finally, I have color without pain!”

★★★★★

written by Jlwalker4 on 05/12/2012

Found my 1st gray hair when I was 26y/o & started the cover-up. I've had an allergy to PPD since I was around 30y/o. It was like having poison ivy on my scalp with swollen neck glands & would last abt a week. I would use Fanci-full to cover my roots until I HAD to color. After a few cortizone shots, I decided to try Sanotint "Light". I'm a brunette & the color chart "Golden Blonde" looked like my color. I watched the video, read all the how-to advise online & colored my hair. I can not believe it but I had no reaction! My color is a little darker than I want but it did cover the gray w/o an allergic reaction. I believe the secret is allowing the product to oxigenate in the bowl before applying to the hair. I left on my hair for 30mins & rinsing was a breeze. If you follow directions carefully, you may not have a reaction either. The only con is I cannot find the product locally (Little Rock, AR).

“Yes to Sanotint Light”

★★★★☆

written by on 01/09/2012

As a recovered bladder cancer patient I was told to avoid any products with PPD. After spending ages trying to find one I came across this product. It covers my grey hair and looks fab - only qualm I have is the container - as it is in a tube it is difficult to measure out half the contents. I have short hair and only need to use half. If only they would use a bottle instead then I would give it full marks.JXXX

“Test proves allergic”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 28/07/2012

I am currently trying Sanotint Light on my inside elbow and it burned immediately and it smells very strongly. I would be afraid to use it on my head since it burns my arm. I feel like I threw away lots of money. Had high hopes for this product but a reader review said her Doctor told her it has toulene diamine sulfate. Cannot say I like it because it proved to have chemicals which I react to.

“EDTA is diamine”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 08/07/2012

If you are looking for diamine free which is what PDD is, putting EDTA is a hair color that says its PDD free is false advertising. EDTA is another form of diamine!!

You have no clue what you are talking about. EDTA has nothing what so ever to do with PPD. Do a little research before you jump in and make a fool of yourself.

“Not ideal but much better than most, albeit expensive”

★★★★☆

written by on 26/06/2012

Not sure if what I used was Sanotint light or just regular Sanotint. I found the dye quality and colour to be amazing for a relatively nasty-chemical free dye, although some improvements could be made here to reduce the toxins further. Still, no skin irritation for me, and my favorite colour, n. 17 Blue black, has the truest deepest jet black of any dye I have found on the market. What really annoys me though, is that they tell you that one packet is enough for medium-long hair, but this is just a marketing trick to make the product appear cheaper than it is, so be warned, if your hair is anything but short you will need 2 packets, not one, for full coverage. I found this out the hard way when I first tried the blue-black, and ended up with half brown, half black hair! I would also like it better if it came in a bottle with a nozzle for easy application, it is messy and time consuming to mix in a bowl, one may as well just use henna in that case.

“Not good enough!”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 12/06/2012

Sanotint is touted as the hair dye with the least PPDs, and while that may be true, it's still enough to cause a severe reaction. Too bad I had to waste $25.00 to find this out! Sanotint is apparently the last resort for many people with allergies. Give it a try, but don't get your hopes up! Since Clariol quit making their non-permanent hair color, I'm left with nothing.

“Sanotint - Better than PPD dyes but not perfect”

★★★★☆

written by on 24/04/2012

I have not had an allergic reaction to PPD but I was growing concerned at the amount of heavy metals I was putting on to my hair, especially as I am quite grey now and need to use darker dyes much more frequently. I went for the light version of Sanotint rather than Classic because I wanted to try something without any PPD at all and see how it went. The colour choice for dark hair is limited. So far I have tried mahogony and chestnut. I find it a fiddle to mix the colour and fixative in a bowl rather than what I am used to with other dyes (having them combined in a plastic applicator) First couple of times my head felt fine but the most recent time when I was just touching up my grey roots, my whole scalp started stinging and I had to rinse it all off before it had taken. SO disappointed and won't risk using again. Three days later and my head still itches. Pros of this are that it colours fairly well without the worry of PPDs (but beware, there is something in here that can cause itching if you are sensitive). Also I liked the fact you could save the colour and come back to use it for root retouching. You can also mix colours within the range to get your own unique shade. Cons - quite expensive and takes a while for the colour to develop.

Has anyone noticed hair loss after using Sanotint Light? I’ve used Madison Reed for years, recently noticed some hair loss after having Covid 4 months ago. Assumed it was that, but have recently read reviews about Madison Reed causing hair loss. So trying something new.

I’ve been using Sanotint light for some months now - I have no alternative as I believe that it’s the only permanent hair colour without ppd - which I’m allergic to. I’m happy with the product but can’t get the colour right. I tried 79 which was too lught. 80 was also too light and 81 was too dark and too red. I’m currently using 80 mixed with 15 Ash blonde to tone down any yellow. What I’d like is my natural colour / before I went grey - which was a light brown/dark blonde with ash tones. I don’t want any red. I’d be most grateful for any suggestions. As I said, I really like the product and my hair is in great condition.
