Good Points: Orchid plants seem to be very easy to grow indoors once you realise some basic facts which set them apart from other pot plants. Most people will say Phalaenopsis (Fal-en-opsis) are the easiest but Cambria types, Cymbidiums and Dendrobiums can also be easy. Surprisingly many lovely species can be even easier to grow in the UK. But I recommend to ONLY ever buy from specialist nurseries if you want strong healthy plants.

Bad Points: The lack of info on labels from shop bought orchids tell you next to nothing and may lead you down the path to killing your orchid(s). They do at least say DO NOT OVERWATER! Also many put their orchids in the worst place in the shop; like next to a chiller cabinet or by the doors so dont buy from there! Current prices can still be higher than for other plants but its worth it if the plant can flower superbly for many months.

General comments: With a bit of searching on the Internet for info, you can easily find an orchid (or many) that will be ideal for your windowsill. I have found that Regal Orchids (based in Scotland) has a very good site - www.regalorchids.co.uk with useful information as well as a wide variety of plants for the beginner. Also when it is time to repot you can get all the right compost, pots and fertilizer to give your plant the best chance to flower even better next time. I have found that once you get started on orchids there is no going back!

Orchids really like the hot weather and seem to flourish in such warm conditions like a greenhouse. But what I like the most is some fresh cut ones in the vase as the smell is delightful and there is colour so vibrant.
