“Re: Western Treasures Booking Ref. WX07531 ”

Written on: 25/04/2013

I have just returned from 2 weeks holiday in America (2/4/13) where I toured the west coast, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon and Yosemite. I did this trip 24 years ago on a fly-drive but having an excellent driver and tour manager really made the holiday. The driver was first class and the Tour Manager’s knowledge of the places visited and the history attached to them really enhanced an already enjoyable tour. This has made me want to book again for my next tour. Yours faithfully, (read more)

Did this tour August 2012 and added on 2 nights in New York. This was our first tour with Archers and will definitely book with them again. Everything was first class. Tour guide in New York and on tour very knowledgeable and helpful.Standard of hotels and location were great. Although we travelled quite a lot on the tour we still had plenty of free time. Can't say anything negative at all and we would love to do this tour again one day. (read more)

“Wonderful Andalusia”

Written on: 19/04/2013

We spent 8 days in Andalusia on an Archers tour, starting at Malaga and travelling to Granada, Cordoba, Seville and Gibraltar. Our travel guide was excellent, as was our driver. The first hotel in Malaga was 4-star and situated right next to the train station. Ideal location and, although we were only there for just over a half day, we were able to visit the Picasso Gallery and a lot of the historic sites. Being there at Easter, we were also able to enjoy the processions. Spent 2 days in... (read more)

My best friend & I did this tour in September this year. We were greeted in Memphis by our fabulous tour guide, Penny. We then headed to our first hotel, The Heartbreak Hotel. This hotel is what I expected & more. It SCREAMS Elvis. On our first full day we had a jam-packed day, we got a guided music tour on the bus of Memphis by a guitarist singing Elvis tunes. Just returned from the Dalmatian coast staying at Grand Hotel Parc. Hotel was good in a great location - paying extra for sea view was well worth the money. Would have been helpful if advised beforehand that we would not be allowed to book into our room until 2pm - arrived at hotel at 10-30am! Guests travelling with other tour companies had been told! I too was on exactly the same trip. The people were fantastic, really friendly and as I was traveling alone, this made it so much better. I have to agree with all the comments about the coach and length of time for breaks and eating. We were constantly rushing, I think that sometimes we should have had longer at "stops" and less time at certain museums etc.
I have travelled to different parts of the USA for 8years now, mostly with Archersdirect, so even I was a little disappointed with this one! Denise W

Newbiereporter's Comment

Written on: 24/09/2012

Having recently done the same holiday, I agree the favourable comments made. Also I didn't mind the threadbare stair carpet & lack of handrail, ditto the extension lead under the bedroom table. Few people in continental Europe would wish to see ElfnSafety rules enforced as rigidly against things like that as they are in the UK.

On the Sunday and Thursday evenings, the dinner at the Axis Ofir was enlivened by a Portuguese folk group in colourful costumes (sort of Morris dancers). They tend to invite diners to join them in a version of the conga. If the thought makes you cringe, you know which nights to eat out.

The hotel is NOT usually noisy but people in the rooms on the north side sometimes hear a strange bleeping noise in the night. We traced this to a marine warning beacon about 3km along the beach to the north of the estuary. Light sleepers should take earplugs just in case. These also came in handy in the early hours of sunday morning when there was street shouting from people leaving the night club down the road.

We were puzzled by the size of the tips 'recommended' by Archers - in the range 3 to 5 euros for the guide and 3 to 4 for the driver - sounds fine except this was per passenger per day. If taken literally by a coachload of 30 to 40 people for 7 or 8 days, this implies a group tip of a thousand or even 1500 euros for the week - in a country where the average salary after tax is said to be about a thousand euros a month. I'm not sure what this says about the likely financial relationship between the individuals and companies involved. But from the punters' standpoint, you need to factor in whatever size of tip you're prepared to pay, when looking at the headline cost of the holiday offer.

I took this tour in October 2012 and found it excellent. You only need to look at a map to realise there will be many hours on the coach. It's worth it to see so much of this vast country from Istanbul to the western coast, the capital Ankara and the high plateau of Capadoccia. The coach made regular stops for refreshment or to see something interesting
