Good Points: As a usability consultant, I have to say that usability is not that bad. I am an older user and managed to work my way around the phone with very little reference to the manual. It is quite an intuitive phone. The pros are the quality of the camera and the browsing capability. I have just downloaded googlemaps and was very impressed that I can use this phone as a navigation system.
Bad Points: Cos are the clunky manner in which one has to input text. I previously had the Sony Erikson p990i where you simply wrote on the screen. Texting takes 3 times longer now! Also, the touch screen isnt as responsive as it could be which can be a little annoying.
General comments: I have read reviews that state the Samsung F490 is a phone for the younger generation quite simply because of its high tech functionality. Well, I am aged 40 and I disagree. On the whole, I am impressed. I was toying with the idea of getting an iPhone but was put off because of it not having MMS and not being available with vodafone.

I moved from a K800i and almost went for the 850i, instead used the contract renewal to try this phone. I like it lots esp the vibrating response when you tap the screen so you know your command is acknowledged.
Answering and hanging up a call is a nuisance - I understand why it is the way it is, but still fiddly.
Overall still pleased with it, like it alot but I've been with Sony Ericsson for about 5 years and miss some of their functions esp contact ID photos being displayed for texts as well ...

A fantastic phone, but ironically enough Samsung have not got the video camera functions of their phones up to standard since the extraordinarily good Samsung D600.
Still, a wonderful phone.

The Samsung F490 touchscreen works well on around 95% of the screen, althou this is about practice and getting used to the phone, the vibrating felt when tapping the screen gives it a nice if a little amusing feel to it when using... when all said and done for a phone it works fine once you get used to it...is it an iPhone killer...No, but not a bad effort...

When I first got the F490 I was a little disappointed as I was expecting it to have a WOW factor right from the start with the new touch menu technology it has, and for me I wasn't amazed at first, at all.Don't get me wrong I was happy with it, it offered everything a phone has to offer, for example I had the G600 before it, however it lacked 3G, I've had the n90, however it lacked looks and cool technology like the touch screen. However, the f490 seems to have everything a phone has to offer wi ...

After using a Sony Ericsson for 5 years, and loving every part of it, And, the fact that my housemate has an i-phone, which is great, it was going to take alot for the Samsung F490 to win me over. But, i thought it would be worth a try, after getting used to the Samsung interface, i loved it!Unlike the i-phone it works on pressure rather than heat, so you can use it though gloves, and clothes - it has a hold on the side too, so if its in your pocket it wont accidentally call someone or something ...
