worked for a prestige car specialist including bmw for 12 years. to sum it up BMW's are no better than say a ford and tend to be overpriced and overrated reliability is no better than any other car. still built on a production line the same as others my view you can buy a better car for less money. if buying lookout for electrical and sensor faults on older cars… Read Full Review

“BMW love it or hate it...”

Written on: 26/12/2011 by forest2win (1 review written)

I have had BMW previously, the E36 shape. The E46 Coupe 318 is a different animal altogether. I felt a little regret at first as I had traded in my Mondeo TDCi and began to see my wallet get thinner as I visited the petrol station a lot more frequently... The thing is theyre not about economy, theyre about driving. At first I was getting it up into 5th quicker than a London Cabby and wasn't appreciating the driving machine. Once I had got over this I began to drive it as it should be driven… Read Full Review

All in all, not a bad car, however I won't buy a BMW again! We purchased this car mid 2006, ex lease car with 53K on the clock in 4 and a bit years we have only managed to wind the millage to 103K, All in all it's been OK, however the RAC have been called several times mainly for silly little things the first call out it just stopped on a motorway by the time the recovery team got to us it was working again, it was then sent to a BMW recommended garage for a diagnostic check, no faults were… Read Full Review

well actually the new cars dont really have a temperature gauge. The meter shows low-normal-overheating. If the engine was running say 95 deg. celsius - which is hotter than usual, but not overheating yet, then the needle would still be in the middle of the "gauge" saying NORMAL temp. But in reality the engine would be overheating slightly and the cooling system would have to work overtime to keep it below 100.

I OWN A BMW 318CI AUTO YEAR 2000.IT LOOKS GOOD BUT IT LACKS IN POWER.THIS CAR WILL BE MORE IDEAL FOR BACK ROADS THAN THE MOTROWAY,AS THE 318CI IS A 4 CYLINDER 1895CC.I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS IDLE VALVE GOES UP WHILE ON GEAR P AND N,COOLANT LEVEL NEEDEDS TOPPING UP REGULAR AND THE ENGINE MANAGEMENT LIGHT COMES ON TO OFTEN.WILL RECOMMEND A 320CI OR 325CI AS I HAVE TESTED BOTH AND IS SMOOTH AND QUICK WITH 5 GEARS NOT 4 GEARS WHAT THE 318CI AUTO HAS.

PS CANT GO WRONG WITH BMW 850CI AUTO!… Read Full Review

if you opt for a BMW 3 series with an automatic gearbox, you dont really know what bmws are for. Get a bigger engine. 1,9 is weak for an automatic gearbox and a 3 series chasis.

Written on: 30/10/2008

I have read some of the other comments posted here and I agree that the car is good looking and is a good drive, but the car has not been all that reliable for the three years I have owned it. I have had trouble with a couple of sensors on the engine causing it to rev erratically and not to rev at times when the accelerator was pressed. The reverse sensors constantly go off when reversing even though there is nothing behind you. To top it all off, both front doors locking mechanisms have gone… Read Full Review

Bought my 2002 BMW 318ci in Oct 07, superb car, always wanted one, and was not disappointed. Mine is black with black polished 18 alloys, looks the business. I'm would recommend this model to anyone thinking of buying one, the engine sounds great and the overall ride and comfort is superb, mine has full hide leather interior which feels like an armchair when your driving. Looking at adding a twin cat back system to give a bit more power, but no need to go too mad, as it is powerful enough… Read Full Review

Written on: 07/06/2006 by graeme1 (1 review written)

I smile every time I drive this BMW 3 Series 318 Ci (it's the 1 in the pic) hard ride but makes for unrivalled handling. I test drove the Merc equivalent and the 2 don't compare. Absolutely love this car and would recommend it to everyone. Averaging around 34mpg and that's with a heavy right foot. Twitchy handling at first but once you realise it's because it's razor sharp it's amazing. I also love the electric pop-out windows at the rear, so cool!… Read Full Review

3 punctures in 2 weeks back in April (unlucky), and those run flats don't come cheap at 200 quid each. Now, after only having the BMW 3 Series 318 Ci 2002 for 18 months, and even though it has only done 25k in 4 years, I'm a little disappointed that I am having to pay another 270 quid out for cam and crankshaft sensors, which have resulted in the car losing all of its power randomly (even when travelling at 70mph along the motorway). This has caused major problems for me, by having to have the car towed to the garage twice after breaking down. The only advantage is that I have saved on what BMW would have charged me if I'd have had the work done there (1,000 pounds)!

Yes, I have a BMW 3 Series 318 Ci 2002 sports car and its great. But I always and still think that the engine sound is too loud. Especially when starting the engine. Sometimes with noticeable jerking.
I took it to three garages to check (including the dealer) and they said its fine! (wonder if all 318 Ci do that or only mine???)

Other than that, its an awsome drive, with great control. And its really spacious… Read Full Review

I bought the BMW 3 Series 318 Ci , which has the 143bhp 2.0 engine, to replace a VW Golf GTI. The car was a revelation to drive once I had got used to its very responsive handling, which made the car seem 'twitchy' at first but feels balanced and communicative when you get used to it. This car corners like it is on rails and inspires great confidence.

Build quality is also very good - nothing of note has gone wrong in 45k miles of ownership and the smooth 2.0 engine just gets better with… Read Full Review

Written on: 08/05/2002 by Paul. (1 review written)

Just got a new BMW 318 Ci with 17 inch alloys and am very very impressed. Having previously owned a Golf GT TDI, it's great to drive a car that doesn't wallow when cornering. The engine is a 2 litre 143bhp unit that is very impressive. There is very little to justify the 320 2.2 litre six cylinder when the 318 goes so well. Why pay higher insurance and more company car tax for an engine that shows no added benefit until you get it into the high rev range. The grey/green colour has the advantage… Read Full Review
