Written on: 26/01/2009 by mato2mato (1 review written)

Its spacious and relaxing, food available in abundance. The atmosphere was great when visited the place for the first time on the evening of Friday, 23rd January 2009. The staff were a bit slow at serving us, though one member of staff in particular worked tirelessly, but was disappointed by some other staff. When we went to pay our bills one member of staff forgot to give us a receipt and when we demanded it, he seemed quite rude and said he couldn't print it. his colleague printed it and... (read more)

I have eaten here 4 times previously, it was absolutely stunning the first 2 but the last 3 including tonight have gradually got worse, I personally feel they are cutting costs and it is very noticeable.

Some dishes (one the vegetarian one my vege mate had looked forward to-pumpkin curry) on the hot buffet were left empty throughout our meal, and when asked if they were to be replaced the staff said they had asked but it had not arrived. The blue lighting on 4 of the eight trees seemed not... (read more)

Written on: 09/07/2008

Wokmania, Cheapside was an incredibly disappointing evening for us. Who would have thought that such reputable chain of restaurants would deliver such a dismal service on this occasion.
Not visiting again, actively discouraging others. Our bad points were -

1) WORST QUALITY FOOD EVER SERVED IN ANY BUFFET RESTAURANT. Chewy prawn crackers and spring rolls, main dishes either bland or over seasoned, cold, soggy, dripping in oil... sauces congealed, noodles raw, desserts sloppy, I can only... (read more)

Fun atmosphere; mainly for large parties of friends and families to enjoy. There isn't anybody that's gone with us before that have liked the 'Pizza Hut' desserts that are on offer either! Not a place for a romantic first date, more for a 'we've been dating for a while' place. (read more)

I thought the food at Wokmania was bad. Warm but not hot. Dried out not much choice. We went to the evening buffet advertised 120 dishes don't think so. Not a king prawn in sight absolutely terrible. The afters were awful again dried out. I think everything was left over from lunch. They had a chocolate fountain that appeared to have nothing to dip in it.

Overall opinion will not be going again. We have been to quite a few chinese buffets and this was the worst one. It cost 12 pound 90 for... (read more)

I thought the food was terrible, bland, over cooked and odd tastes for typical orential dishes.
Simple sauces such as a popular curry sauce tasted tainted with a thai curry taste? (*note i do like thai curry) No idea why i asked if i was eating the right sauce and as i thought it was what the label said.
Also the duck and pancakes were at an extra cost of 1 pound per person, of course this isn't unreasonable but the duck was by no means nice. Dry hard and over cooked. The cucumber and... (read more)

This is a very classy setting for a Chinese buffet restaurant, being in the former St Werbergh's church on Cheapside, Derby. Whoever they got in to convert the place deserves a medal. The look is cool, contemporary and stylish and it chimes perfectly with the original ecclesiastical architecture, whilst avoiding being too "churchy". I've eaten in other establishments that were formerly places of worship and it can feel disrespectful and offputting if too much of the original fixtures and... (read more)

Although the food is good, the fact that there is only 1 till (by the bar, and this is not always staffed), means that there are invariably long queues to get seated & to pay for your meal. It is possible to stand around for 10 minutes whilst staff pay little attention & other people push in front of you. I think this setup is designed to sell people more drinks whilst they are deliberately kept waiting. As a result, it diminishes the experience a bit (read more)

Written on: 01/03/2008 by B00nsie (1 review written)

We went and tried the lunch time menu at Wokmania in Derby, and it was OK and worth recommending.
Then we tried to book for the evening - there's no website, no one has their phone number, so went in to be told they were busy, although we did get their number.
Made a phone reservation for 1st March and turned up to be told that my name didn't appear in the bookings.
While spending £60+ for 2 adults and 2 children isn't extravagant, you still want to enjoy the experience, and when the staff are... (read more)
