“Coming from an experienced tutor .. AVOID THIS WEBSITE”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Chasebu1964 on 11/12/2023

... I've had a disappointing experience with First Tutors recently. Despite being a long-time tutor with positive referrals, my account was abruptly suspended without any prior communication. customer service failed to address the issue appropriately, and I discovered that the suspension was a result of a system error during a discussion about availability. This incident is especially disheartening as I work with challenged children and 11+ and GCSE students, yet I've never faced such unwarranted punitive action elsewhere. First Tutors' lack of communication and swift decision to permanently block me is unacceptable. Considering other tutoring platforms that offer better pay for tutors and more reasonable charges for parents, it's clear that there are superior alternatives available. Save yourself the frustration and avoid First Tutors.

“Avoid this site”

★☆☆☆☆

written by pxBell407 on 11/09/2023

This site is not interested in helping tutors. They push you to pay a 'premium' to them which supposedly places you higher in their search lists. It DOES NOT. I paid this premium and despite following all their advice, and having experience, qualifications, references, up to date DBS, offering a reduction for the first lesson, offering free resources, I was still placed below people who have not paid a premium, and have not done anything, sometimes, not even a photo. When I complained about this, they blamed it on their algorithim, saying that it was designed to be fair to all tutos- This is RUBBISH! Please avoid and try something else and con't waste your time and money on this carp site.

“Horrible service for tutors”

★☆☆☆☆

written by AubreyWillis88 on 29/09/2019

I am having a lot of problems with First Tutors as a tutor. 1. They are more interested in being paid the tutoring student's fee before the session than help tutors. 2. In two occasions i had 2 payment's issues with 2 students. The last one owes me £200. I contacted First Tutors by email and they said they can't do anything with it!! They asked me to make a claim at court and who is gonna pay the extra charges?? So, tutors are not protected against any unexpected issue, so be ready for it! 3. One of my students provided a feedback without starting her sessions because at the end, she changed her mind! I asked first tutors to delete this feedback and they said they trust in student's feedback integrity...and what happens with tutors? Without tutors this company wouldn't exist so pls, be aware, take care of tutors and treat them how they deserve to be treated! 4. I feel really disappointed and angry at this lack of professional behaviour and empathy with tutors. I have been with First Tutors for 10 years now, so i feel that they are taking advantage of tutors and students in some way and they are more interested in money than in providing a competitive/ excellent service. Excellent tutors there are few , (i consider one of them because all my students get the best marks in their exams), so if they don't take care of their tutors, the level of tutoring will get down and students won't trust in them. I feel familiar with other reviews on this forum, i have also had to work sometimes for "free" to please students, charging a little rate to make them happy, being with them 1-2 years, (most of my students are with me long time), and after, i ask these students to write a good review for me and some of them they don't do it after being successful and get the highest marks in their exams. So, all this hard work for nothing! And then, there is a TOP tutors list in wich you need to upgrade and pay £30 to be listed at the top of the list. If not, students won't see your profile, (even as in my case, i am fully qualified with 15 years of experience). So, i advice First Tutors to create a new policy to protect tutors against difficult students and make some obligatory rules: 1. Make payment before every session. 2. Provide feedback.(Before publishing, tutors can check this profile and if they don't agree with it, they can proof the issue with it and be hide or deleted), without being shown any bad review with red colour on profiles. So, happy tutors become happy students and not on the contrary. It needs to be balance and equal the level of service for students and tutors.

written by Diyae377 on 21/04/2018

I found the service easy to use. The tutors respond quickly and I was able to find a suitable tutor within a few hours after discussing my needs through the private message area. Many tutors to chose from with different hourly rates. Quick response from customer service too.

I can see from other review sites that I am not the only person who feels tricked out of their introductory fee. No where on the website does it make CLEAR that the price you pay to first tutors is AS WELL AS paying the tutor directly. I paid £24.99 just for the EMAIL ADDRESS of a tutor. I selected an online session simply for the tutor to look through a problem question for university that would take no time at all. I was robbed of £24.99 for nothing. They state that it is to 'keep their prices reasonable' but I do not think £24.99 is 'reasonable' to charge a student (I paid for it, my parents did not and could not) simply for an email address. It is not clear anywhere that this price is as well as. Avoid like the plague. I will never ever use this website again.

“Disappointing, tutors please avoid”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 05/12/2017

I feel that this company provides a service biased towards their student clients with no commitment towards their tutors. I feel that this company should publish reviews from ethical and truthful clients only. I agreed a discounted price for 2HRS lessons. Only after the first class, the client asked me via email to provide them 3HRS of my time at the price of 2HRS as this is how it is done in HONGKONG (the client recently immigrated from HongKong). I suggested that it will cost them extra (as we only agreed a price for 2hrs class & not 3 hrs) and hence I got a review saying that I care more about the money than the welfare of the student!!! I explained the situation to the customer services and requested them to remove the FALSE feedback provided by this client. The customer team said that they cannot remove the review as it is NOT A QUESTION OF WHO IS RIGHT AND WHO IS WRONG, but client’s opinion and that they do not have a right to remove this opinion (eg it is not rude, racist or untrue). I was shocked as the staff FAILED to see this as an UNTRUE review! The client provided incomplete information (which was not untrue) and it was accepted by the company. I provide the company with complete information of the situation which proved that the clients' review was UNTRUE. For that reason I felt that the clients review should have been removed (including the stars) from my profile. Further, the staff ignored the fact that this client made an attempt to obtain my contact details without purchasing it which is against the rules of the website. They ignored the fact that I gave a 50% discount on the introductory lesson and agreed for more discount on further lessons. They also ignored the fact that the student’s parents asked for tutoring GCSE maths but the student expressed his intensions of doing AS-level maths. The staff ignored the fact that the client did not make their intensions clear before the first class and try to enforce 3hrs of service at the price of 2hrs only after the first class. The staff ignored that fact that the student thoroughly enjoyed the lesson and said that NO ONE HAS TAUGHT HIM IN THIS WAY BEFORE. The student also mentioned that his PREVIOUS tutor gave him formulas and asked him to memorise them, which clearly shows that this is not the first time this client have made changes to their tutoring arrangements.

Quick and easy. Signed up, searched for a suitable tutor. Discussed my requirements- when we were both happy I paid to release the details. Getting on really well with my tutor. First Tutors also sent a follow up email to check how I was getting on. I have emailed their customer service and they are always quick to respond.

“Bad treatment of tutors”

Never been so humiliated after 5 years, glowing reviews and many trustees after a bout of illness I was told not to be part of first tutors very disappointed. All they care about is money not the learners.

Firsttutorscs's Comment

Written on: 27/05/2015

Dear YusufMcDaniel,
Our most common complaint from clients is why do tutors with live profiles not respond to requests. We have been reminding tutors via automated emails to take action with all requests or to switch off their profiles when unavailable.

If a tutor misses 3 requests we will keep their profile deactivated. This is to ensure that our learners/clients receive the best service and send requests to tutors that will take the time to respond.

“Great website, made only good experiences!”

★★★★★

written by on 18/11/2013

I have used this website as a tutor and have to say that it is very well organised. For security reasons, I was ID checked and two colleagues, employers or people that can comment had to write a reference for me before tutees can get in touch. Peace of mind for every parent! Within a short period of time I had several requests from tutees, got on touch and am now lucky to already have my first positive feedback from them. I hope this will inspire more tutors to work hard, be well organised and prepared for lessons. Would thoroughly recommend this website!

“Excellent speedy response from both website and the tutor.”

★★★★★

written by SallyHeidi on 22/10/2013

Website was extremely easy to use and the tutor responded to my message within the hour. I contacted him and he rang me back and arranged a meeting within 3 days. He was happy to travel to us even though 9 miles away and arrived promptly. He is extremely well qualified and reasonably priced and seems very keen to help my son achieve the best grade possible for his A level Law. Would recommend this to any parent looking for a tutor.

“Very disappointing!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Dalzy on 29/08/2013

It's not a reliable site to look for a tutor. Please be aware! We had a tutor on two occasions and both of them turned to be completely unprepared to teach, with no communication skills. Even if they had some knowledge they were unable to communicate it because they were too focused telling their own stories. If you see the reviews of the tutors you'll notice that all of them have very high scores. There are no bad tutors! Also, we wanted to write our own review but couldn't find the link to do it. £10 to buy contact information plus £45 of two "tutoring hours" and my daughter knows nothing more than she knew before. Loss of time and money. Such a shame that this company makes money on vulnerable pupils. They should monitor closely the tutors they recommend and be open to reviews of the clients.

Tutorx's Response to Dalzy's Review

Written on: 10/09/2013

I am a tutor with First Tutors, and I think that what you see are not 'reviews' about the tutor; this is why you can't leave any. They are actual references, where appointed referees have rated the tutor. Like all reference systems, there is the odd possibility for an unscrupulous 'tutor' to mention friends of him/hers as referees and to fool the site admin. First Tutors is the only site I know that also now asks the tutors to provide personal data that are verified through bank and local government databases, so at least you know that the ID of the person is checked, and they are who they claim to be.

I advise students and parents to

1. Choose tutors with an CRB check if the student is under 16, or vulnerable in any way.
2. Read the tutors' profiles carefully and choose people with high qualifications or proven experience
3. ASK for a CV and to check those qualifications
4. Ask for an informal short (perhaps 30') meeting to meet the tutor and have a chat to discuss the student needs, before committing to more lessons. I always offer such a meeting free of charge. There are bad tutors out there, but there are also bad parents/students who don't know what they want or what to expect, and nobody is too good for their precious kid. So, I want to know what I'm getting into too!

PS. It seems that now First Tutors actually allow 'reviews'. I think they do listen to students' feedback and they keep adding new features to their system. But since reviews and references can be manipulated, it is better to use your OWN judgement, and check the tutor's attitude and qualifications yourself.

First Tutors's reply to Tutorx's Comment

Tutorx, when a tutor signs up with us we request that they provide two references and as you rightly mentioned all tutors must past an ID check too. Feedback is a different aspect of our website. Once a client goes ahead with a tutor from our website we request that they leave honest feedback on the tutor's profile for others to read. Little by little tutors can build a good reputation via positive feedback (like Ebay, Amazon etc.) There are profiles on our website with negative feedback but it is also true that many tutors remove their profiles when this happens.

I agree, and I believe that even the fact that you monitor this site and you bother to answer to reviews and comments is a POSITIVE and professional sign, that one doesn't see in other sites.

I hope ID checks are performed on the students/ parents who look for tutors, as well, because we, tutors, fall victims too to unscrupulous individuals who register fake names, address, d.o.b etc.

I contacted a tutor through UK Tutors, and paid the fee requested. The tutor never responded to any of my emails subsequently, and would not reply to my calls. When I wrote to UK tutors to help me with this, I got no response. It is very poor service to take money from a client and not respond when they attempt to contact the agency with a complaint.

First Tutors's Response to Dalzy's Review

Written on: 10/09/2013

Dalzy, did you contact our customer service team about your problem?
When a client is let down by a tutor, we ask that they leave feedback on the tutor's profile for others to read. There is a direct link from the member's area to leave feedback. The reason you will see very few profiles with negative feedback is that the tutor's themselves remove their profiles from our website when this happens. We always offer another tutor free of charge when feedback has been left so please could you contact us so that we can help you find another tutor.
Kind regards

“WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE ? THEY SHOULD NOT BE OPERATING !”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 17/06/2013

Who are these people? Their tone with me has been derogatory, belittling and bullying. Their articles deprecate not only my subject but teachers in general. Although used to travelling over 5 miles to my pupils they consider only sending a pupil within close proximity. They have only referred twice - the second time was someone who did not want a teacher, but simply a piano to practise on. Obviously the admin. at First Tutors had not taken the trouble to read the inquiry. I had an offensive email from them when I did not follow it up, threatening me with a poor review. They have obviously no idea of how peripatetic music teaching works, with a suggestion that different rates are paid depending on different grades. Absolute rubbish. It is only too easy to set up a website, but with obvious lack of experience in the teaching field they are failing miserably. They do NOT deserve your money. Don't use them. Go to local music shops and libraries for music teachers and other tutors.
