Notonthehighstreet are a rip-off. They don't actually sell you anything, but take your money and pass the order onto the hundreds of individual suppliers. To do so they charge the suppliers 42% of the cost. Many of them are dependent on Notonthehighstreet and started when the commission was just 18%. Then a venture capital firm bought them. Every year since they have crept the commission up and up so now it's like a sweatshop with hundreds of small businesses barely making a living while... (read more)

If you have any respect for your money do not buy from this site. This was my first order and they sent 'checkered towels' instead of the strip towels that cost me 88.00. I tried to contact the seller for 7 days with no reply, I tried leaving a message with the web site - nothing. I finally found a telephone number and spoke to 'a real live person' and was told the seller would contact me? they took my money quick enough. I've contacted both NOTHS and the seller to no avail, via email as they do not provide a phone number. I have threatened to ring Trading Standards but i've still had no response. Recently brought a likes poster print from rosie robins, came up to £45 which for the person I was buying it for is worth but when it arrived it wasn't in a frame which in her picture she has displayed it did.. So £45 for some writting and no frame- miffed off! Got a frame for £8 anyway but not the point.. For that price I would expect atleast a frame! The website looks nice and the goods look fantastic but the search facility is poor for breaking sections down into more manageable and user friendly sections. The site is a good place to display my work as they have heavily invested in marketing and have a very prominent online position. Agree with the response below - unless it was an actual issue with the product itself (i.e., the clasp was faulty and this was the direct cause for the loss of the bracelet because it came open and fell off your wrist).
If that isn't the case then sorry it's your responsibility, and frankly it's unfair to expect someone else to provide recompense for your own carelessness.

In answer to both of the above comments Yes the product was faulty I have never lost an item of jewellery before and No I do not expect the small independent retailer to recompense customers for losing an item. I do expect customers to be recompensed for faulty goods or at least offered a discount on repeat purchases if the goods were faulty - neither of these were offered by NOTHS. My husband works for a very successful small business and the main reasons for their success are quality products and customer service.
The overall score of 1.7 out of 5 shows that I am not on my own in thinking that the quality and service of NOTHS is unacceptable!!

As a small business trying to get by Not On The High Street charge an absolute fortune for doing very little. They take a huge percentage of anything we sell. I would urge anyone looking at items on not on the high street to then look the business up and order from them independently. We are being creative and spending hours making our products only for NOTHS to take 27% just for selling it online. I don't know how they sleep at night as it is daylight robbery. (read more)

We sell on NOT ON THE HIGH STREET but after several years it still only represents a fraction of the volume we get from our own website and Amazon. We're forced to price our products much higher to try and recoup some of the massive 27% commission they charge, monstrous set up fees and ridiculous delivery policy/costs. We have just signed up with NOTHS after considering it for quite a while. We decided the only way to make a profit selling on their site was to charge higher prices than on our own website. (Taking into account their high commission on everything!). Your article is very interesting as I have just read their new terms and conditions and am feeling very very annoyed that they are saying we now have to sell at the same price as on our website. We were told on the phone a couple of months ago that we could increase our prices to make sure we make profit. The only people who seem to be making the money are NOTHS!

Once they've reeled you in they have no problem whatsoever disregarding any previous agreements which are worthless anyway as they can change their T&C's whenever they wish. I wouldn't might so much if the sales volume were there. Sadly it's not and we've noticed a sharp decline in past 6 months while our Amazon and website sales have exploded. Example, this weekend, we have 72 sales on the website, 48 on Amazon and 0 (yes zero) on NOTHS. We use same photos and similar descriptions for each channel. Personally ,I'd ask for your money back if you can.

You wont be able to get your money back. In my opinion NOTHS are absolute crooks they are only interested in lining their own pockets, they treat the sellers very badly indeed, making up rules that suit them as they go along. They indeed charge the extortionate 27% on every sale, then VAT they also charge the VAT on the postage that they set. If you sell your own stock somewhere else cheaper, they will kick you off the site (remember they have already taked £600 of of you) This company needs to be outed to the general public. Don't buy from them don't join them, go to your local high st and support your local shops or Folksy (who you are not allowed to sell on it you are on NOTHS). If they don't like you as a seller they will kick you of the site after a year and keep your £600 plus VAT joining fee. The site is starting to get a lot of tacky cheap overpriced items for what I feel are rip off prices. They are basically ripping everyone off, stay away both as a seller and buyer! There are forums where sellers share their dreadful experiences but are actually scared of mentioning their names in case of repercussions from NOTHS. 1984 is here and big brother is NOTHS.

Thank you - I have been thinking of joining NOTHS. My concerns have been that they actively promote all things personalised and not much else. Also the joining fee is astronomical and the commission ridiculous.
They do however have a large customer base and good marketing which is very attractive when you are new in business. However I telephoned several 'partners' selling with to get there points of view and one generously disclosed financial details saying they were making between £3-7 profit on items retailing at £30-50, at 25% NOTHS are making £7.50-£12.50 - is that fair? I am not prepared to be a busy fool and let onther organisation have the cream.

But they rip off sellers by charging high joining fees and inflated commissions on each sale, thus the goods must always be over priced. Sellers also risk losing their good reputations. Savvy shoppers discover the seller's own websites where the same items cost considerably less.

I received vouchers for NOTHS. I ordered a piece of silver jewellery that was supposed to take 5 days to arrive. It finally took 3 MONTHS of toing and froing before I got the item. It wasn't even as nice as described or photographed. I have since discovered the same piece for sale on a crafting website for HALF the price of NOTHS. No way I would shop with them again..... I have been making enquiries with a view to selling my handcrafted goods on this website. What a complete and utter ripoff! In order to sell, you are required to pay huge joining fee (well over £700!) plus pay nearly 50% commission (including VAT) on every item that you sell, including commission on your P&P charges!!! Hi,
I am a craftsperson, a jeweller in fact, and a seller on NOTHS. It has been an excellent investment and I think your comments over the cost of joining are completely over exagerated!! Unless things have changed dramatically in 18 months, it cost me £500 to join (a one off payment which I made back within my first month) and 30% in commission. This not unreasonable as most galleries take 50%!!
It is not a rip off if you work your prices out properly. You should always have a wholesale price, which includes your profit and then a retail price, which is usually double you wholesale price. That way you would be able to sell you work down many avenues and always know that you have made something!
There are gripes as with anything in life but you have to make your business work.......and pricing is the biggest bit to get right. £30 sound too cheap to me, especially with the price of silver these days, and how much do you pay yourself out of that - you have to think that if you had to pay someone else to make it you would have to pay them minimum wage of around £6 per hour, plus materials, overheads, then add in your profit-£75 sounds much more reasonable to me!
Yes, I do make multiples of pieces-all handmade I assure you-so each piece is still unique....I call it limited production and to be honest how else are we to make a living.....if you make something that people like why not sell multiples of it. I work on my own, make everything myself and don't buy my stones from India, I use British companies only and am very proud of my work. I have worked out a system where I can deliver handmade jewellery within 5 days. If you really want to sell well, stop moaning and get on with it!! You should consider applying to NOTHS, you'd be in good company.......

Judging by all the reviews I've read here I have to agree with these comments. I own a small business and NOTHS contacted me wanting to sell my items. I am thanking my lucky stars that I found all these reviews because there is no way I want to up my prices to cover their crazy commission fee or risk gaining a bad reputation for poor customer service due to this 'middle man' set up.
