“Great horses, friendly staff”

★★★★☆

written by MekhiKoenig173 on 15/09/2014

Groupon booking is a nightmare (I believe booking direct is much easier and more reliable, but obviously I had a groupon voucher), but the horses are amazing. Not your usual follow-my-leader trekking plots, all the horses I saw looked fit and healthy. Those I rode and were in my group on the two occasions I have been here had spirit and get-up-and-go but also amazing manners and willingness to listen to their riders. On one visit we rode down bridleways that are also used by runners to end up riding in the middle of a running club/race. The horses are all clearly well trained, they dealt with runners sneaking up behind them and then shouting or even worse reaching out to touch them without warning perfectly. I was amazed none of them bolted (in fact they were better than horses I have ridden elsewhere that also do RDA work and those horses are supposed to be bombproof). The staff on the yard are all friendly and I am told the horses do a max of 3hours work per day (which would explain their good energy levels and fitness). My only suggestion for improvement would be to add another level of trek in between the beginner and advanced, as I am sure there are many like me who are bored on the beginner trek (although I did enjoy the sceenery) because we can do more but worry on the advanced trek that we may hold others in the group back (although I was never made by the staff to feel that I was holding my group back).

Sunny July morning, friendly welcoming staff, lovely horses and a 90 minute trek along the fields around the picturesque scenery of high lane with views of Lyme park.

“Such fun”

★★★★☆

written by Tancork on 05/07/2014

First time riding for me and my 2 kids aged 9 & 12 today. Hilarious start to the trip "waiting for horses" and wrong directions!!!! Ben put us all at ease and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Lovely weather lovely group and well behaved horses. "Jake" "Rio" and "Ricky" thanks for a great family experience. We look forward to a return trip.

“Trek Ride”

★★★★☆

written by on 17/09/2013

I went to Mill Farm for a 1.5/2-hour trek in June this year, which was booked through a group-on style voucher with niece. As relatively experienced rider, having ridden on and off for longer than I care to admit and owned my own for over 7-years I was looking forward to riding a different horse and hacking out with my niece. The initial greeting at the farm was a little disorganised and resulted in us starting nearly an hour late. We asked our ability level so we could choose an appropriate ride and assigned an appropriate horse. I was given a nice steady horse and my niece a lovely little reliable pony, my niece was anxious about doing the gallop and I have to Della who led our ride, was amazing! She gave my niece amazing confidence to gallop and even gave her the opportunity to do it again as she loved it so much - so thanks Della you helped make her day. Overall the experience was good, it wasn't fast and furious but the ground conditions weren't conducive to that kind of ride. I felt with the group on voucher it was definitely value for money and might have paid up to £25.00 - £30 no more though. But the end result of a very happy, confident niece who had a good time was achieved and for that I would highly recommend, thanks Mill Farm and Della in particular.

“Great hack”

★★★★☆

written by on 18/10/2012

Used my groupon voucher for hack on 14/10. Weather had been awful leading up to the day so many tracks were too wet to use and route had to be modified. Never the less still had good time and got in a couple of gallops. Rode Mailibu who was lovely and staff were very friendly

“Trekking Centre”

★★★★☆

written by Barbk155 on 11/05/2012

Felt welcomed as soon as I parked my car. Friendly staff. Ruth took me over to the trekking centre but due to the recent bad weather the normal route across the farms fields couldn't be taken so I couldn't have a gallop. But I fully understand safety first for both myself and horse. Ruth really put me at ease and I had a wonderful 1hr 1/2 chatting, trotting and cantering. Will be going back again once the fields have dried abit.

“Good Friday trek”

★★★★☆

written by Bonnie548 on 11/04/2012

Arrived with only moments to spare -got sorted with forms and body protectors seemed a bit disorganised and we waited for a late arrival who never came. This delayed the trek starting by nearly an hour. However once we got going it was fabulous. Dells (short for daniella apparently) led our beginners trek. My daughter was on the advanced trek with josh leading and two lovely people dad &daughter team. We both really enjoyed the 90 mins and horses were lovely as we're the lead rein girls. Lovely scenery and nice friendly staff only sorry the centre isn't near enough to go more often. Will definitely go back though. Havent ridden for many years but even managed a canter near the end - legs only just recovered! Would recommend this trek to all.

“Got my confidence back!”

★★★★☆

written by Cleggy69 on 06/03/2012

After not having ridden for a couple of years , I was a little nervous about getting back on a horse again, but needn't have worried because after my experience today at Mill Farm I've got the bug once again ! I went out on an advanced trek led by Ruth , and accompanied by the fittest man on earth Josh ! Both Ruth and Josh were great, really friendly and supportive . The scenery was beautiful , the horses were lovely , and the pace for me today just right , with a little cantering . Can't wait to come back in a few weeks !!

“Well mannered horses”

★★★★☆

written by roughley0 on 04/03/2012

We went as two groups. Novices with Josh and more experienced with Ruth. Both leaders we attentive, knowledgeable and aware of the needs of needs and capabilities of both horses and riders. The novices with Josh had a wonderful quiet hack and thoroughly enjoyed themselves in lovely safe countryside on well mannered (sometimes with a mind of their own !!)amusing and steady ponies. Had a wonderfull time. 3 of us went out for an advanced ride on well mannered, experienced horses who were more than your average treking centre plods. We had a lovely time on the disused railway line for trots and canters and Ruth was attentive to our needs and abilities at all times. We will be back when the fields have dried out to have a gallop !!! It would have been nice to have gone straight to the treking centre under our own steam but even the mini bus ride was an enjoyable experience. WE WILL BE BACK !!

HeyJess- I already got back to you by email, but for the beenift of everyone else ..We just had a wonderful Potluck and farm tour at one of our produce farms, Brothers Farm, in October, which Jessie and her family attended! It was an amazing time, with 45 folks and the most wonderful variety of local dishes! We organize farm tours/potlucks periodically at our farms at Spring Run, so be looking here at the website after Christmas for another in the early spring! Jessie, so sorry that your family will not be here for the next event, but we loved you all being here for the short time you were you have a beautiful family, God bless!!!

“Although not the smartest set-up or the glossiest...”

★★★★☆

written by tattytilda on 02/04/2011

Although not the smartest set-up or the glossiest ponies, this is a lovely, friendly riding stable where children are positively encouraged to become more involved in all aspects of pony care - my daughter and I spend most of the afternoon there. Whilst it's a slight disadvantage that there's no indoor school, there IS a jumping paddock AND a track around the fields so riders can enjoy a 'hack' within the school grounds. Horses all seem well cared-for and are NOT overworked which is a major consideration, and prices are similar to other local stables.

“I am new to the area and looking for a riding school...”

★★★★☆

written by on 04/08/2010

I am new to the area and looking for a riding school for my son. I am concerned at the vehemence of the responses to negative comments about this school as much as I am about the lack of response to negative comments about another school in the area.

Can I say I have been going to this riding school for nearly 4 years now. Both my daughter and I have horses on loan here. I left a riding school that was very milirary and bullying and will never go back there. This school is totally the opposite. All the staff are friendly and welcoming. Safety is their main concern and the customes always come first. If you are not happy with riding a particular horse/ponty then they will change it for you, not tell you "you will ride what you are given" at some schools I have been to. All our horses are not worked longer than 3 hours a day and all our horses are well behaved. You need to com to Mill Farm and have a look round and meet our horses. As for negative comments - 2 out of 45 cannot be that bad!!!!

There is parking available yes. We met them at a farm right on the A6 then we drove around 2 miles, following them as its quite tucked away, to where the stables are. It's probably a good idea to give them a call if you can. The signpost on the farm on the A6 is only small but if you use satnav, you should be in the right area. Once you're at the stables, there is sufficient parking. You'll really enjoy it, it's beautiful countryside and the staff are really very pleasant - as are the horses!
