“Awful - avoid”

★☆☆☆☆

written by McDonaldcy443 on 22/03/2014

Bought a property through Spicer McColl, and would never go near them again. They were very keen and helpful until the minute I agreed to buy the property, at which point they completely lost interest - wouldn't respond to messages etc. There was an extremely long delay in getting the contracts sorted out - they sent it three times because it allegedly kept getting lost in the post. After me asking several times whether they were sending it to the right lawyers and then saying they were, they finally admitted that they hadn't been. This led to a delay of almost a month of me getting the keys. As the house needed serious repairs before I could move in (the house had been vacant for about 18 months), by the time I finally managed to get the keys, I had only two weeks left (I had terminated the lease on my flat), during which I discovered that the boiler didn't work, so had to move into a house with no heating or hot water at the start of February as local plumbers couldn't install a new one in time. I don't believe anything has ever caused me as much stress as Spicer McColl (I ended up suffering from tinnitus for a while afterwards), so would strongly recommend avoiding them.

“GUZUMPING!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 2Jellybeans2 on 17/05/2013

Recently I put in an offer for a house through Spicer McColl estate agent. The offer was accepted on the condition that the house was taken off the market. Great, we thought! But no, they called today explaining that someone else has put in a higher offer, and the vendor is accepting their's instead. Essentially they want to create a bidding war. It's called guzumping, and is legal, but in my mind at least completely void of business ethics! They get away with it as they (in Spicer McColl's words) "work for the vendor not the seller". AVOID THEM

I had a pretty bad experience with their legal team which charged 60 pounds for nothing and then I was directed to premier property lawyers who charged me 360 pounds for disbursements, in one single day without the valuation being done. End result i lost 420 pounds because of their non professional service which does not consider customer. they will keep passing yoy on for more commssions. AVOID AVOID AVOID

“Spicer McColl - incompetent, over priced and useless”

★☆☆☆☆

written by sellinghouses28 on 01/05/2013

Useless. words actually fail me in describing the service we received for selling our property through them. They over valued our house - so surprise surprise it attracted little interest but amazingly the week before their exclusivity ended they said we needed to drop the price and what do you know - SOLD over the weekend. So what the sold it, the customer service, communication and post sales service was abysmal and I would NEVER use them ever again. Couldn't be further away from what they describe themselves as a 'Premier' estate agent. All their staff talk absolute tripe and are covered in teflon - nothing is ever thier fault. Have written to their customer service manager twice to complain and funnily enough after 'extensive' investigation they think their service is acceptable. Steer clear - dont let them dazzle you with promises, nice brochures and smiles - it all ends the moment you agree to sell with them. Wouldnt recommend them to my worst enemy.

Never met such a bunch of ROGUES, terrible service and repeated LIARS. We put our property on the market with these cowboys,at the Benfleet Essex branch on the 4th of April 2011, with an agreed contract of 16 weeks. We were told there would be a fee of £150 vat payable if we broke the agreement, fair enough, but after terrible service we took our property off the market with them on the 31st of October 2011, clearly well past our agreement term, now they are still demanding their £150 vat, and are threatening to take us to court. Bring it on Spicer Mcoll, after the publicity you will gain from this, we hope other prospective clients will see you for exactly what you are,ROGUES.

“Very poor service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 22/08/2011

Tried to sell through Spicer McColl for over 12 months. Their sales commision remained at a fixed price even though we had reduced our property three times (effectively 3% commision!). Very poor customer service at times....several potential buyers had told me that they were not impressed by the dismissive and uncooperative behaviour of the Sales Team. Over 90% of viewings were carried out by us anyway, hardly value for money considering they slapped us with a £180 marketing fee at the end when withdrawing from the market! Can they do this if it's been over 12 months!? Our contract was only for 6 weeks! Considering the few times that they did advertise our home, by my calculations I could of advertised myself in the local papers for half the price! This company is huge disappointment, even more so than Hamilton Piers....please avoid.

written by on 23/05/2011

Recently used Spicer McColl Abbots Langley to sell my property.
Very bad experience, after accepting an offer on my property below my asking price, 4 weeks to completion my buyer dropped out. The whole process has cost me £1500 in legal fees.
Spicer McColl mucked up moving dates, did not qualify the buyer correctly as he was not able to get a mortage, yet was still able to put an offer on my property.
Then to add to insult, Spicer McColl Abbots Langley sent me an invoice for £180 to cover their marketing fee's which I feel they really did not deserve. There was no mention of this "marketing fee" when they were trying to get my property on their books to sell!

written by on 15/05/2011

we had our property on the market for 9 weeks with them all was good with them for a week then nothing no calls, but at about 8 weeks we had an other way below the asking and they kept trying to make us take the offer and getting grumpy about it when we kept saying no .they also ask if they could advertise it for 2 weeks on a guide price but after the 2 weeks were still doing it anyway we had had enough so we said that we our taking it off the market as my with was close to her due date (baby) and couldnt take the stress so they got very grumpy and abusive, after this they told us we needed to give them 14 days notice so we did .then all was quiet till i checked my bank account one day to find i was overdrawn in the bank account as they had taken £180 from my account , we called them up about this and was a cancelation fee . i was not told about this when joining them i didnt get a copy of the contract , but the thing is they shouldnt do it without my permission so isnt that like theft? anyways thats my history with them

Hi, I am current with Spicer Mccoll at present and am in a 12 week contract which is soon coming to an end. May I ask if they charged you that fee because you ended the contract early or was contract up?

“IF YOU ARE THINKING OF SELLING YOUR HOUSE DO NOT USE...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 09/03/2011

IF YOU ARE THINKING OF SELLING YOUR HOUSE DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. I have never come across such a poorly organised and uninterested shower. And I'm a buyer not a seller, all the seller would hear is nothing.

I asked them to send me any property details for houses they have for sale in the Braintree region, after 3 weeks they have not managed to post me ANYTHING. We loved a house they had for sale for £259,000 which we found on the internet ourselves and after viewing it twice 'Stacey', kept ringing and ringing and ringing complete harassment. She would be ringing when we left viewing the properly, and then when I said we will have a think and ring her Monday she says ok I'll ring you at 4pm on Monday, I say look Ill ring you Monday morning, she say ok. 9am Monday she is ringing. To be honest just annoying not a serious problem.

Anyway in the end we decide to put in an offer of £250k on this house listed for £259k, and after 8 DAYS they have not even managed to ring me back once, or communicate what is going on AT ALL. Absolute zero communication, zip nothing. It has got to the point where I am going to have to write to the vendor myself and say look I am trying to buy your house, and I think Spice Mccoll may have gone bust?

To think these clowns expect a cut for hindering peoples house selling process aswell!

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 24/02/2011

I can only agree with some of the comments I've read - great to start off with but very poor service overall - distinct lack of feedback or interest from the sales staff - after 11 weeks with them came to the end of my contract, with only 1 viewer and now there trying to enforce a payment of £150.00 for 'marketing' services. Despite the fact that I initially asked them to clarify if there would be any charges at the close of contract and was told there wouldn't be any made - now there saying I misunderstood them!
Terrible company mis-selling their services.

Hello,

I am in a 12 week contract with Spicer Mccoll and completely agree with you on the lack of feedback. Our contract is also coming to an end shortly and although upon signing the contract we queried the £150.00 marketing fee and was advised this would only apply if we cancel the contract before it expires, I am worried they will try and backtrack and be in the same situation as yourself. May I ask if you paid the fee? or did you escalate your complaint?

Hi there, just wondered what your outcome was with SpicerMcoll, we are currently going through exactly the same thing with them at present, requesting £150 + vat, for taking our property off the market with them, even though our contract had expired., and originally being told no fee would be payable. It now looks like there is going to be a court case pending.Any feed back would be greatly appreciated at [email protected]. Many thanks

“I arranged to rent a property through Spicer McColl...”

written by on 23/08/2010

I arranged to rent a property through Spicer McColl Ipswich over 6 weeks ago. The evening before I was due to move, they phoned me to say it wasn't going to happen as they had messed up some paperwork. In 2 days time, me and my wife will be homeless as we had given up our current flat after being urged to move on an exact date. Through the whole process, the manager has been blunt, rude, and has given no indication that she cares about our plight in the slightest. They were very quick to take our money, after that they never called unless we phoned them first. I beg anybody reading this to avoid this company at all costs. It has cost us hundreds of pounds and we still dont have a home.

“First impressions was excellent, but THEN. ”

written by on 20/08/2010

First impressions was excellent, but THEN.

It took them a year to find a buyer (i know its difficult market) then when they did find one they messed up and did not do the proper checks there end and the sale fell through. It then took them 2 weeks of saying everthing is fine and then drop the bombshell that the sale had failed. We then had to drop are price by £4.5k because we had to find another buyer quickly, they have no remorse about there fee even if it was because of there failed checks the first sale did not go ahead. They are a nightmare when you phone for update and expect to have to chase a couple of times to recive a phone call back..

Thats my little rant over with

READ THEIR CONTRACT VERY CAREFULLY. WE AGREED A 1.5% BUT WERE THEN OVERCHARGED BY £500 WHEN THEY CLAIMED WE HAD AGREED A FIXED FEE - WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MINDS WOULD AGREE A FIXED FEE?? ESPECIALLY AFTER THEIR INCOMPETENCE FORCED US TO TAKE A £30K DROP IN PRICE. VERY DISHONEST COMPANY - THERE ARE A LOT OF GOOD ESTATE AGENTS OUT THERE - YOU REALLY DON'T NEED TO USE THIS COMPANY!

written by Egbert on 27/03/2009

Almost the same experience as ktdingley with spicer mccoll.
Very approachable and attentive before I signed. Almost untraceable since then. They have found me 2 viewers in 6 weeks, and never fed back to me after either....in fact, I am still waiting for someone to ring me after the 2nd viewer and that was 4 days ago!
I was lied to about a buyer who wanted to view my house as soon as I signed up - that person has never materialised and the manager has failed to return my 3 messages left for him at the Colchester branch to discuss this person. I now know it was just a line to get me to sign.
Manager failed to furnish me with the truth about costs - did not tell me about the VAT on top of the fees, even though I asked if £2500 was all I would end up paying (he replied YES - lies!!). I was not offered a choice of dual agency or sole agency, nor was I told I would be signing for 16 weeks with them.
Utterly dire customer service. I have just been plonked on their websites and that's the marketing done. I cannot wait for my contract to end with them...shame it's wasting 4 months of my precious moving time. Please save yourself the distress and AVOID Colchester Spicer McColl.

★☆☆☆☆

written by ktdingley on 08/02/2008

Before signing up with them they appeared well-organised and professional. As soon as they had my property on their books they were very hard to get hold of and didn't keep me up to date on developments. When I asked questions they were abrupt and unhelpful. This nearly cost me the sale of my house.
