Good Points: Rugby 08 has simple controls for easy gameplay as the game is tough enough without having to figure out which button passes or kicks. The graphics are almost identical to its predecessor but it does have one graphical improvement, the likeness of player faces compared to their real life counterparts, thus distinguishing between the players.
Bad Points: The controls can sometimes become irritating but eventually become bearable as there is often a lag between pressing the pass button or the bind button and the actual player responding to the controls command. Also, the automatic tackling in this game detracts from the concept of rugby as there is nothing more satisfying than delivering a bone jarring tackle to force the ball loose and regain possession for your team, additionally leaving tackles to be made by the computer can often lead to missed tackles if the player is not close enough to register a person to be tackled and thus a try being scored against you. Also, there are a limited amount of basic facial and body creational options to choose from when creating a player to be entered into a roster. They should take a leaf out of it fellow EA sports games programming books like Madden and NHL and it would be much more enjoyable to see yourself score a try in the world cup final.
General comments: Rugby 08 is the most intense game to play as the pressure is on when you have to defend a 10 or 12 phase play, then regain possession and come up with a 5 pointer. Nothing could be sweeter. There is not much difference between the 07 and 08 versions of the game in most of its aspects like graphics and players. However, there is the introduction of strategic AI technology that actually makes the opposition a real contender in the higher difficulty levels as field position becomes everything through the use of kicking and tactical defense is the linchpin between winning and losing.
This game is a must have for your ps2 collection if you are at all a sports fan and I would have no problems recommending it to a friend.
